Just heard the sad news that Roly has passed away.

Got all of his and the video crew's highlights. Him and John Moore made a great double act commentating.

Condolences to his family.

excrement, that's hit me right in the feels!

Voice of my Town education that.  Absolutely lived and breathed 90 Great GTFC Goals 1989-91 on VHS, wore it out until it was unwatchable.

THIS IS NOT ANFIELD!!

RIP Roly.

If this is true, I'm absolutely gutted. Roly's help in everything I do with the OTD stuff on Twitter has been invaluable. I've bags and bags of his tapes in the loft.

Didn't know him before I started the account but over the past few years we struck up what Id' like to call a friendship and he'd sometimes randomly call with news about a Town player or just somebody he thought I'd be interested in. Remember the early days of the account and the excitement when he'd call to say he'd found another bag of tapes.

Done so much for the club and we are very very lucky to have the content and matches that the film crew recorded, especially the early 80's stuff when other clubs of our size weren't doing that.

His sense of humour was brilliant too.

Just a legend of the club and Town.

RIP

We seem to have had so many losses this last year /season  and I'm not talking about on the pitch.

RIP Rolly and all the others who have sadly passed

They will all be in my thoughts for these  last 2 home games .

Hopefully we can further remember them in some way

RIP Roly. Great Great memories... 'You'll not see a better goal on any football pitch anywhere in the world.' Roly after the Buckley Babes had scored a worldie.

'I walked in the dressing room. The window was open and I thought that a sea fret had got in. Then I saw smoke billowing from a pipe in the corner of the room...it was my centre-forward. He looked seven stone wet through. He went on to score thirty-odd goals that season.' Lawrie McMenemy on encountering the legend that was Matt Tees.

A loss of a true character. When I was younger an old mate of his said to me "next time you see Roly ask him if his nose and tash come off with his glasses" ....
I never dared.
His double act with John Moore was absolute class.

R I P Roly.   Has many have said a true town legend   I remember him  with affection as  one of the best landlords the fishermen’s ever had back in the days when it was a proper pub. Then after that running deans nightclub a true local character.

Was he the landlord at the Hainton once upon a time?

Sad news indeed. My tapes only go back as far as him being co-commentator.

'Where's he been all season?!' — after Mendonca scored a hat-trick v Ipswich. Just had a knack of saying the right things at the right time, always got the tone right too.

His commentary was legendary. Pun after pun Even though I was at nearly every game in the 80/90s as a exile his coverage was classical and gave us opportunities never to miss a Town away win etc RIP  Rowley and Thank you for ever etched in GTFC coverage of the Buckley era

I worked with Roly for nearly 10 years at Humberside Airport from about 2003

Constant laughs, and i loved hearing about his days as Landlord if his many pubs and clubs.

But.........i dont recall him ever talking about his time with microphone in hand.

I was blessed with working with another Mr Grimsby, Norman 'Nobby' Atkins for about 12 years too.

The Fishermans was one of the first pubs I started drinking in, Roly was the landlord.

A real character in a good way.

Really sorry to hear this. I loved those videos, and his commentary was definitely a part of that magical era when we had skilful players that were a match for anyone in the championship.

I guess we didn’t realise then just how blessed we were to see those teams. It is great that we have those tapes as a permanent reminder of those incredible days, and his commentary helps bring it all back to life. Wonderful times.

RIP fella, and thanks for the memories.

RIP, a sad loss and thoughts going out to his family. A decent indicator of a great commentary team is when fans of other clubs enjoy it and whenever I share Town vids of John Moore and Roly, they always get mentioned.

Quoted from wuffing

Sad news indeed, Roly and John Moore were a great double act.

Another Roly highlight I remember from 90s highlights videos: Barnsley at home, possibly 95/96. One of their players (maybe Darren Sheridan) has been moaning to the ref throughout the match. Late in the game he sliced a shot horribly wide. Roly: "Moan at that one!"

There was also a good clip from a couple of years back of Roly at home watching our play-off final triumph, full of energy.

Thanks Roly, RIP.

I was sat just a seat or two along from Roly at Wembley when we beat Forest Green. It looked as though he wasn't with anyone (although I'm sure he'd come with someone!). We chatted briefly, he was happy to be in the crowd on a day like that, rather than on a gantry.

I always remember the one when Peschisolido launched Handyside into orbit in the home playoff game against fulham. You could feel his anger coming through. I think if he'd not been up on the Gantry he'd have been on the pitch to tell him what he thought.

Normally agree with that sentiment but a  minutes silence given his association with punditry and humour would seem odd on this one.
Imagine though a minutes silence finished with that Huddersfield clip on the big screen with commentary broadcast ..😍
