It’s not a surprise or shock is it and in fairness I’m surprised he made it this far.
Done enough to fill several lifetimes but also had a lot of suffering too.

Fairytale of New York is Christmas to me and I’ve listened to it a gazillion times and it still stirs up emotion in me even now. I can be happily singing my head off and feel myself going. That’s a gift to be able to conjure that up in someone.

Sad news. RIP.

I’ve just read that Dean Sullivan had died too aka Jimmy Corkhill.

Deserves a minutes applause for making it to 65. Dirty Old Town my favourite - was our wedding dance song. Rum Sodomy and the Lash is great. RIP

One of my all time favourite artists. Fantastic songwriter, who admittedly had a voice that was an acquired taste, but it just fitted in with his persona and musical style.

He certainly lived life to the full and left behind many fine songs beyond fairytale of New York, but if that is the song most associated with him, then it's not a bad legacy is it? His music brings back many happy memories of drunken family gatherings with family members who are no longer with us. His birthday is at Christmas and he will always be associated with that time of year for me.

Rum, Sodomy and the Lash is the pinnacle, and a fantastic album.

Will raise a glass to him tonight and have another listen to his best work. Will probably shed a tear.

RIP Shane, you earned it.

NME took Shane, Mark E Smith (the Fall) and Nick Cave out on the urine and the journo just listened to their drunken ramblings and then printed them, I’d wager the rest of the evening was very very messy. Mark E Smith only made it to 60. Nick Cave became clean - went to see him a year ago or so - brilliant. The three of them are superb lyricists.
