A return to a back 4?

"Falls to Arnold... Arnold! That's it! Thats it! He's sealed it! Grimsby Town are back in the football league!!! Just a minute to go and Nathan Arnold makes it 3-1! Look at the scenes behind the goal! Look at the relief! The agony is finally over!!!"

I'm confused as to what PH is doing. Constantly rotating several players and now a formation change (apologise if players are injured and I'm unaware).

The players have played twice a week for god knows how long, we’ve nothing to play for.

Rotating players because of the schedule and probably trying different stuff now we are relatively safe, with an eye to next season.

A racehorse doesn't run every Tuesday and Saturday for 6 weeks on the trot, nor do athletes who run the mile. Professional footballers cannot do it either constantly.

Twice a week shouldn't be a problem for pros.
Technically we could still be promoted or relegated. With 5-6 games left with nothing to play for then I'm with you on that.

Clearly I'm in the minority but it's my opinion, I hope at full time I'll be apologising.

Maybe a good idea to listen to the pre- match interviews before texting in the future. Hurst said that 3 players whe played Saturday have not travelled today with a mixture of injury and fatigue.

With Khan, Hunt, Lloyd, Emmanuel and Mcatee starting there is no shortage of ball players tonight that's for sure.

I'd imagine Efete is still nursing his ribs from the assault he got on Saturday. Their player definitely knew what he was doing and the ref did nowt.

Maybe not but it’s likely to be a disadvantage for your first team to sit on a coach for 10 hours midweek, play against a side desperate for points, whilst your weekend, play-off chasing opponents are sat with their feet up, dreaming about scoring the winner in front of 20-odd thousand people on Saturday (1pm).

Dont think there is much chance of us going anywhere now so why flog players in to the ground and he may also just looking at players and formations that he said he would. I dont think he will learn a lot about any of the players , They have nearly all  had all season to impress

Tough one tonight. They are in good form, ten points from their last five games.

On the other hand we have this knack of winning away games when least expected…..

Worry is Emmanual as a right back, thought he was poor the other game he played there. Will be interesting how we do with a 4 at the back, presume Crawley won't have over prepared for the formation.

Certainly has an end of season feel to this, but I’d rather like us to win. They’re in annoyingly good form, but I’d like to see Crawley, a club who offer absolutely nothing to the EFL, go down.

A win tonight on the back of possibly the least convincing 3-0 win I’ve seen in my life earlier in the season means we’d have doubled them, so we could at least say we’ve done our bit.

Started well again.
Need that goal

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Great goal by Harry

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Get in. Brilliant from Amos and Harry

The camera pans to the Town fans after the goal and they were completely unanimated. Wondered for a second if the picture was frozen but nope. Weird

Heart was in my mouth when Khan slid in there

Keeper is huge but awful. I'd be shooting at every opportunity. He seems like he's going to flap and drop everything so follow up every shot.

Fantastic first half from town, only difference from this and the previous couple of games is we've actually scored the goal we've needed before half time. Utm

The only thing wrong with that first half is it's only 1-0.

One of our best 45 mins of league season.

I said at the start of this thread the team had plenty of ball players in it and that's exactly how we have played.

If only our final third play was as good as the build up.

Whenever we are on top, we very rarely put the game out of reach, but we are the better side so far and deserve to be in the lead.

Let's hope we can build on it second half.

Would sub Lloyd at HT because I think he may get a red in the second half.

That has to be my most enjoyable 45 minutes of the season. Luton 1st half at home was clearly very good but I've enjoyed how we've played so much thus far.

We seem to be winning the first and second ball, maintaining possession, incisive with the passing, calm and composed all over and the only thing we haven't really excelled at is the finishing touches in the final third.

If Town maintain this level with the final bits added in this could end up being a very convincing win.

If I were a Crawley fan I would be calling this ref to high heaven but it's great to be on the benefitting end of things. Think a lot of things he's got right but the honest me says we've been given a few very soft decisions, hopefully he doesn't pull a Mansfield and give us absolutely nothing.

Finishing hasn’t been great but the fact we’re getting in on goal and passing the ball is a massive improvement.

Fair score line Crawley 0 grimsby 5. Takes some doing to miss this many easy chances again . Possibly the worst finishing you will ever see from a professional league football team

Because he was worried about the opposition. As opposed to making changes that would have allowed us to keep possession. Sort of like keeping Parslow in your team.

He’s on the fringes of the Preston first team by all accounts so I have no doubt he’s a talented lad who will go on to have a decent career, but we’ve seen very little of his ability during his loan spell. Frustrating.

This score line sums our season up. Totally dominate but can’t score. We should be out of sight.

If O'Neill passes that two yards to the right then Morris has an easy tap in. He's not good enough to be playing in League Two.

Seems a excrement time to start the discussion and I know I’m in the minority but unless he suddenly does a Rob Jones, I don’t see Maher as anything more than a bit part player next season, especially if we’re promotion chasing…

So many chances to win this game ffs

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

2 points dropped as we can't score more than 1. How flipping frustrating.

Massive surgery needed in the summer, we knew that from the last few matches. Can't finish a hot dinner, and if O'Neill is Preston's next big thing then they will be with us in a few seasons absolute dogger. Can't simply miss that many chances and expect to get something from a football game.

2 games on the trot I feel drunk off and angry.
Oniell can go back, totally pointless having him near the side. Scannell did absolutely nothing, which you can let him off to an extent but to not be in position or do any of the basics it's not good enough.
Clifton 90th minute runs his guts off half the length of the pitch ONiell and Scannell can't keep up.
Pisses me off even more their fans are buzzing for the point. Their team is absolutely awful. How can they be happy with that.

On the plus side I felt we played the first 2 3rds very well. But we need to release alot of players.
We can't be carrying players like we are at the moment.

Tough to take, clearly work to be done in the summer, dominated the majority of the game without really creating too much. Wasteful in the final third.

Anyone else just want the season to finish now and get the summer transfer window open?

Saturday when we should have had subs Hurst did nothing.

....excellent performance....lovely football....not ruthless enough.....one stupid decision from Maher who was otherwise faultless.

Hurst subs.....detrimental really.  Scannel no where near match ready,  virtually played with 10 men after he came on  although taking Khan off was probably a wise move as he was on tight rope.
O Neill...not first team ready either.

Unbelievable we didn't bring 3 points home tonight on overall balance and general flow of the game.

What a killer. Fantastic performance for the vast majority and should have had far more than the one goal.

Subs didn't impact the game at all really, was hoping for more from Scans after being excited to see him get his chance. O'Neill just not really at it, Orsi not long enough in the game but didn't really offer the running that Lloyd does.

Huge shame on the result because the performance was deserving of far more but once again we're our own worst enemy and will be leaving feeling very dejected for our poor finishing.

I've only seen a few minutes of him in here and there at BP but he has looked way out of his depth during that time. Obviously has potential but some 18 year olds are nowhere near ready for first team football.

Jack Lester, for example, was 21 before he established himself as a player.

Unpopular opinion coming up .
Do Hursts substitutions improve us?

Only if he has the quality on the bench to allow it to, tonight I’m not convinced we did.

Pathetic result against that team . They was just simply awful !!!! Never have I seen a team get something from a game they got battered that much . Rubbish subs cost us

Could potentially have cost Hartlepool alot more...they play Crawley on 22nd April. I'd rather they stay up than the tinpot suburb.

Six points dropped in three consecutive games where we were massively on top in the first half but didn't convert it into goals. Play-offs would have been a possibility if we hadn't fluffed so many chances.

It will be interesting to see the comings and goings this summer. On the one hand, we've got a decent base to build on, but on the other, too many of even our better players can't manage to get the ball into the net often enough when they really should.

When you can't score more than one goal, you are only ever one mistake away from not winning the game, and that has happened countless times this season, so it's very evident where we need to improve.

Ahead against Newport and we drew. Ahead against Walsall and drew. Ahead again tonight...

One was enough against Sutton and Rochdale, but it's always risky when you can't add a second and third.

Last time we managed to get 2 was against the league leaders, but we let 2 in and missed a penalty.

Ah well, it's not a disaster and our decent run continues.

I am just glad we are playing decent football now the shackles are off , a pressure free run in and an FA cup quarter final -not a bad season really is it on the whole .

I expect us to challenge for top 3 next season though , there isnt anything to fear in this league , and we have a half decent squad -5 or 6 quality additions and we are right up there .

I am more worried that with Hursts prudent approach he will still want tl try and get good deal bargains though rather than pushing the boat out ,time will tell.

Sorry but the purpose of substitions is to improve your position in the game tactically or similarly not to give academy players from other clubs a few minutes experience etc . As soon as we brought on Scannell and ONeil I feared the worst .

O Neill still playing under 21 football, jogging around when out of possesion, thinks no one will try and tackle him when he has the ball and slow in all his decisions. You can see he has a good touch and skill but should not be near starting, should have kept Essel at the club and be giving him a few sub appearances instead.

Can’t believe what I’ve just watched, the game was so one sided and we had so many chances to score and contained Crawley all game and to concede through a dubious penalty leaves me feeling gutted.

Dead Eye Dobbin stood motionless waiting, waiting, waiting for the ball to arrive. Back came the right foot, Down came the right foot, Bang ! Headlines around the world as the ball flew into the very top right hand corner of the goal.( Jim Dobbin scoring in the 89th minute for Town against Newcastle United away 24/10/1992 )

Very drunk off. Should have won 4/5-0. They were hopeless. Stupid tackle and guess what 1-1. 2 points dropped. Again

Send O Neil back, he’s not good enough, scannell looked overweight, mcatee was poor, Lloyd excellent. Sign him at all costs.

Yes, we should have won and the disappointment gets magnified each time this happens. We have thrown so many points away. Sometimes from not putting chances away and sometimes because of individual lapses at the back. We could easily be pressing for a play off place. However, despite all of this I am going to remain optimistic. We all knew a a top striker was needed in January but we failed to get one. That has to be the priority for the summer. But we also know that we are as good as the loanees we manage to get. That’s the way it works in the lower leagues. Hopefully, we can strengthen for next year but Paul Hurst has a real job to do and it is not easy. In fact, it’s tough. Let’s be glad that we are not going back to the hell hole beneath us and hope Paul can work some miracles. I love the fight that most of the lads have shown. Most of them deserve huge praise.

It's also to see what they are made of, and PH to his credit has said in his post match that they didn't do enough. He will have learnt a lot tonight, and will be looking to next season and retain lists.

I don’t see what more El General can do tbh, for now. Has us playing like Barcelona recently but the players are allergic to goals- is it confidence? Composure? Quality? All three? I’m not convinced it’s quality as our starting team looked several leagues higher than Crawley in all round play, the subs were a massive drop off in both work rate and ability but who else do we have? I do think Maher was stupid to go in there rather than just stand up, but the forwards and midfield should have had us 7-0 up by then and it really shouldn’t have mattered.

Thinking positive though, at least the easy goal for them pegged us back to a draw and not a defeat. If we play this kind of footy next season with a better squad it’ll be amazing to watch AND hopefully successful too.

He didn't start though, came on as a sub.  Also he has only started 2 games and come on as a sub 5 times, and yes, he is still only 18.

I’m not going to be too hard on the lads for that, yes absolutely we should have been way out of sight but we’ve had much tougher watches and either lost or drawn and the lads worked their backsides off and deserve a lot of credit for that.

The subs where probably required as McAtee & Khan looked knackered but you can only bring on what you have sat there, also bit hard on O’Neil considering he’s mainly played cameo’s in games and very few senior ones at that, not his fault.

Definitely 2 points lost again but when you look at it overall it was much better.

Paul was our own worst enemy. But that’s all right - as we are looking to next season- almost got the magic 50 points.

There must be a game going on where higher league clubs unload in contract youngsters who they decide are not up to it out to lower league clubs on loan to recover part of their wages. We seem to be the mugs taking more then our fair share

I've only seen a few minutes of him in here and there at BP but he has looked way out of his depth during that time. Obviously has potential but some 18 year olds are nowhere near ready for first team football.

Jack Lester, for example, was 21 before he established himself as a player.

Same with Harry Kane too. Wasn’t on anyone’s radar at 18.

Come on scanzzzz

You might as well have brought me on, he was hopeless, the second break by Clifton where he tried a cross come shot, all it needed was someone to get into the area and there was Scannell hardly breaking into a walk, if he isn't fit enough he shouldn't have been brought on, in fact none of the substitutes improved us.

Another hard watch after the subs came on.

Lloyd, McAtee and Khan were running them ragged, and then Clifton alongside Morris gave the midfield the hardness needed.

So many chances wasted, but Morris and Lloyd both had bad luck with their efforts.

Crawley's subs seemed to speed their game up and they started running at us for the first time in the game.

Scannell was really rusty and showed why Hurst has not used him.

Once we stopped attacking them high up, it seemed that we would have a long hard last 15 minutes, and it proved to be just that problem.

Sadly , another 2 points lost, after 70 tremendous quality passing and attacking minutes.  Unfortunately, matches last for 90 + minutes  so concentration and marking high up needs to last that long.

Hurst must be frustrated that so much good play can suddenly disintegrate so quickly !! !

Will be massive if Paul can motivate his players in the next game, after botching them up in the last.
How does he?
But, eventually he does.

Just a reminder that Dieseruvwe is being outscored by both Lenny and Amond in the NL.

Dieseruvwe will deservedly go down in Fishy folklore but signing him would have had little impact on our position this season.

Lenny was and remains a far better player, even though his shop front is faded by age. Whilst Lenny’s time as a L2 player is long gone, I find it a bit weird that people still clamour for Dieseruvwe, whilst Lenny was often derided.

Not really sure I understand the relevance of the transfer window to us not winning that game. Three big chances fell to Clifton and Khan, vastly experienced League 2 players who should be sticking them away, and Lloyd, who was signed in January and most seem to rate. I certainly do. The subs weren't great when they came on but I'm not sure how much they contributed to Maher diving in (despite him apparently winning the ball cleanly, this from a Crawley fan stood in front of it). Crawley made nothing else whilst the subs were on.

The facts are we were absolutely brilliant tonight other than the most important bit. We played some fantastic one touch passing at times and Emannuel and Smith were brilliant at the back. Morris had another good game, Clifton was everywhere and Hunt had his best game in ages. Lloyd was clever, battled hard with their Shreks at the back and was unlucky not ro score what would have been a brilliant goal, althoughonce presented with the chance he probably should. McAtee ballsed up a decent half chance in the first half but worked his balderdash off on the press  Very, very encouraging. 9 times out of 10 we win that 2 or 3-0

I reckon those subs should have been made if we was 3-0 up , bringing them on while Crawley was still in with a shout was a mistake .
That said Hurst has to give them all a chance now to show if they’re worthy of a contract next season

He's dammed if he does he's dammed if he doesn't. McAtee and Khan where knackered and offering little. Crawley where pushing up field and fresh legs would help as an outlet, they did in the case of O'Neil who was fouled on the edge of the box.

Hurst wasn't to blame for last night's draw the players who failed to finish and a poor refereeing decision where.

Nothing to do with subs two reasons we dont win 1. missed chances /sitters 2. stupid tackle for pen , if we win 1-0 nobody mentions subs

Having a little time to vent after last night…

We should have been out of sight and out of mind and not even had to worry who we brought on and Hurst can’t ultimately finish the chances himself. However he can then make the subs to make sure the game is finished properly. Scannell is still miles off and will be released at end of the year and O’Neill just isn’t ready for the physical men’s football. Danilo was the best of a bad bunch of subs but Hurst found out ultimately what he wanted to know about some of them.

Special shout out to Bryn Morris who in the past week has been exceptional and made me eat a few of my words questioning if he had something in him to stay next year. Carry on like that till end of the season and I’m sure there will be a contract waiting for him.

Poor refereeing decision?

Looked a stupid tackle and a penalty to me.

Had my first legal pint in there in 1967 on my birthday. Knew the landlord's son. We nipped across from the Grammar School at lunchtime via the back door.

Behaviour unbecoming for a prefect!  Never been since.

Was the landlords son called John Griffiths?

Not a case of damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t it’s a case of making the right decision in the circumstances and that was clearly wrong.

He was forced into the Khan one as he was heading for a red card. Had been booked, had got given benefit couple times after, any contentious challenge thereafter and he was off.

Khan coming off changed the game, whilst having missed enough chances before he went off to kill the game, it just changed our tempo and approach altogether.  But it was enforced, had he stayed on he was getting a red card the next time he put a challenge in.

Scannell was disappointing but I'm not sure what's expected when he hasn't played for 3 months.  O'Neill seems to have gone backwards.  Was impressed with him on his debut but progressively has had less and less impact (albeit, in fleeting chances).  Least you expect is him to bust a gut but he just meandered around last night, in and out of possession.

A single one of those countless chances gets taken and we're cooing over the performance. Fine margins and all that.  Hardest position to recruit to, but we have a deadly striker and our season looks very different, never mind just last night.

Not taken both Khan and Mcatee off with still 20 minutes to go.
If he felt he had take Khan off to avoid a red card which I don’t really buy into then Glennon would have been a better option then a clearly off the pace Scannell.
Also Gallagher for Hunt with 10 minutes to go and one goal in it was a risk

Amazingly Max didn't get cramp, but he did open his mouth to the ref for a second yellow on the trot. A peno has been given and, apart from var, it is an odds-on certainty that the ref will not change his mind.

Hurst could have brought on Glennon, Green or Holohan instead of the totally unfit Scannell.

Don't worry folks, this was all part of the master plan.....hand Crawley a point to help send Hartlepool down and then we can grab Umerah from them.  Makes perfect sense.

Paul was our own worst enemy. But that’s all right - as we are looking to next season- almost got the magic 50 points.

Ah...so it was Hurst who missed all those chances then?

And there was I thinking it was the players out there on the pitch who wasted one golden opportunity after another!

Then the Scannell fans would say why do have him on the bench if you don't play him!

Dammed if you do and dammed if you don't.

Jeremy. 'Jezza' was a quiet fella who always seemed older than his classmates. Tall and admired by the girls!

I'll try to send an old school photo by a DM.

Erm.......... bringing Scannell on to to please the fans, are you serious?

For Paul Hurst's faults I doubt he is stupid enough to do that.
