I know what you mean but this neck of the woods does have cheaper housing compared to many parts of the UK, eating out relatively inexpensive, beautiful countryside within 10 minutes drive , minimal "serious" crime level...etc
If not having a Nando's or a Wagamama is the stopper then maybe NELC can pull one of them in to their Freshney Place project.

If I were you Moosey - I would keep this quiet.

Agree that the approach from the A180 isn't the best

But why not then leave via Great Coates and come to Town along Laceby Road, Weelsby Road, Clee Road etc..... it's a more attractive route to take to BP

I said this the other week and got shot down, come off at Barnetby top, drive past the airport, I'd even come in through Waltham, didn't Humberston ave, onto North Sea Lane and down meggies front to BP...anything to avoid the A180 into Gy.

I don't think the issue is as plain as some think. We can clearly sign players and some posters have pointed out the thousands of players we have attracted here over the history of the club.

I think the problems arise when we try and sign the better players; the ones at the top of the wanted list, because these players will have the most options, demand the highest fees and wages and will have the pick of far more clubs than your average EFL journeyman.

Even if we compete on fees and wages, the player will have many options of location to pick from, and with the best will in the world, GY isn't going to be at the top of most players wish list.

Then the only option becomes to offer more than other sides, and that way lies trouble if you want to remain sustainable. Trying to keep within a wage structure based more sensibly on income will not allow us to outbid a club who are willing to chuck loads of money at it. This money usually comes from a chairman or chairmen who have very deep pockets and are willing to do this. Wrexham and Stockport spring to mind, and there are plenty of others.

We are getting the best crowds we have had for a long time and have sold a record number of season tickets, but if we are budgeting at a sensible level of expenditure to income, then we can't compete with a Hollywood actor, or a multi millionaire who has many times more millions to chuck at it than our owners do.

There are teams out there operating at over 200% wage expenditure to income, so you could argue it's the system that is at fault.

That’s the way I used to drive Mrs Voles in when I went back to see my parents.

She didn’t see Pyewipe until our 10th anniversary.

By that point she’d seen me use the TV as a urinal when I stumbled home after an Xmas do one year, so Pyewipe was small change.

From an aesthetic point of view that A180 entrance is the worst thing to happen to Grimsby.  A complete disaster for the town and as an entrance to a seaside resort.

What some towns would give to have the sea on one side of an entrance and we manage to make it look hideous.

I get it totally. I am not slagging Grimsby off at all but if I was offered the same amount of money to play for Exeter/torquay/plymouth or Grimsby/scunny/hull ... I'd be 100% signing for the South west teams.

Not sure how far the same wages would go in Torquay compared to Grimsby?!

Great post ginny!

Simple facts are that two things will appeal to players the most.

1) Money
2) Location/Convenience

On the first point, if we get into a bidding war with Wrexham or Stockport or whoever else is lobbing the cash about, we might as well forget it. 99/100 the player takes the most money they can in a short career. Fair play to them for that too.

We aren't splashing cash about. It's that simple.  Our second best friend in negotiations is the second point.  Problem is we're not well located or convenient for the vast majority of players.

This isn't about how nice Grimsby is/isn't. I flipping love the place and will fall on my own sword to defend it. But I'm neither a 22-year-old professional athlete wanting to shag my way through a large city on a weekend or a family man with two kids who live in Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester, anywhere that basically isn't Grimsby.

Yeah, we've attracted loads of players in our history. But in the last 20 years, how many really really good players have we attracted? A dozen? Maybe two dozen?

The vast majority were excrement. The reason they came here is because they were that excrement no-one else wanted them.

We've got two options; spend loads of cash to get players like Paul Mullin who conveniently remembers he's got a Nan who lives down Manchester Street. Or we make our offer as convenient as possible.

We stand still and do nothing or just reinvent the wheel we'll get the exact same output, which is largely excrement players and excrement results.

Civil engineering is the best reason I’ve ever heard for not attracting players.

It’s not going to get any easier, most of the “ballers” as they now call themselves coming through the academy system couldn’t pronounce Grimsby without adding “init”, “bruv” fam” or “cuz” to the sentence never mind find the town in the map.

Yeah, you're right.  I got the train into Meggies with a lot of opposing fans on it. ( can't remember who)  One lad said to me, "It's a shithole".    From Grimsby Docks to Cleethorpes is kinda hard to defend.  We know the great history of the docks.  An outsider sees a run down , dilapidated area.

Going well off topic, but intercourse it. Nothing else stays on topic here, but he's not wrong...

Every other town with a puddle of water makes something of it. We've got a massive opportunity that dominates the centre of the Town and we do intercourse all with it apart from do some renovation work every few years on Corporation Bridge.

From the Riverhead right along to the Fitties our council should have made something of that gift years ago.

Sorry, I forgot, there was that £1 million spent on the bridge that looks, supposedly, like a ship to Garth Lane that Fenty championed.
