Scunthorpe in a worse situation than I thought, unable to afford to put the match on with fans attending !

Apparently this was played this afternoon at Glanford Park 'behind closed doors' (at Scunny's request).

Both clubs put out youth squads and Town won the game 3-0 and move into the semi finals.

Cleethorpes Town are also in the semis and will be accompanied by the winners of
Spalding Utd v Boston Utd and Grantham Town v Gainsborough Trinity.

I know it's only their highlights but good to see the Scunny youth team emulating their first team to a tee.....tidy in approach, cr@p up front and gifting goals at the back...any of them would fit in perfectly.

You have to ask what is the point of the Lincs Cup if Grimsby vs Scunthorpe is played behind closed doors on a freezing day in December.

I agree especially when they couldn't be bothered to field their first eleven.

Why should we be even remotely interested when they play behind closed doors with youth teams.
I remember in the distant past when these games were anticipated and we'll attended.

This supposed to be a senior competition. Hurst tries to arrange friendlies so some fringe players can get some match practice but rarely happens for various reasons. Competitive game available for likes of Orsi, Pepple, Hunt etc.  (Even if ready, Scans for 20 mins) all of whom could have had 60 mins, but used youths only, don't quite get it.

But if Hurst has already spoken to *checks notes for who it is this week* Michael Nelson and it's clear Scunny will be fielding a youth side, there's very little benefit from the likes of Orsi, Hunt, Pepple getting game time against a youth side.

Sad that the Lincs Cup, which did use to hold some sort of kudos at one point, is so downgraded now that it's a) a youth fixture and b) it ends up getting played behind closed doors.  Wonder if there was an option for the venue to be switched at all, but then I suppose the ground staff at BP would want the pitch to be protected as much as possible.

Impossible to make a fair assessment from those highlights but great to see Woods' charges clocking up another win. The Town No 10, I think it's Harry Milner, looked very impressive again.  Could definitely be one to keep an eye on for the future.

Shocking challenge near the end by the Scunny sub, surprised it only got a yellow.

We're about to play 3 games in a week on heavy pitches so I understand why Hurst may have been weary of playing his fringe players in this fixture.

Ah... how lucky am I? Once saw the great Futchenstein score from the half-way line in this cup!

'I walked in the dressing room. The window was open and I thought that a sea fret had got in. Then I saw smoke billowing from a pipe in the corner of the room...it was my centre-forward. He looked seven stone wet through. He went on to score thirty-odd goals that season.' Lawrie McMenemy on encountering the legend that was Matt Tees.

Weren’t Lincs Senior Cup games sometimes part of preseason a few years ago?, I think this gave them a bit more kudos as always a desire to see new squad additions etc.

3 games in a week…why on earth would he play any first time players?

The LIncs cup used to be played pre season but I guess, like everything else, the clubs weren’t keen. I remember going to Glanford Park pre season a couple of times or playing Lincoln…

Play the yoof in every game…

I remember going to Lincolnshire Cup games on football special trains back in the 80s. We had some good days out in more recent times as I've seen us win the cup at Sincil Bank twice. We took more there in that competition than they brought to us in the league most seasons at that time.

Scunny have hosted games for some Sheffield United sides, again behind closed doors. I wonder if it is stewarding costs because these were Blades fixtures that fans attend elsewhere.

I certainly remember this competition being part of preseason and it is for the "Senior" Lincolnshire clubs. It now seems to have drifted down the calender and may soon go into oblivion.

With regard to 3 games in heavy conditions. This use to be the norm a few decades ago with little if any grass on the pitch. Times change but the conditions for every game are the same for each side. It's how the better sides adapt to them and win matches.

Three games in a week I get, but they will have gone over 2 weeks without a game before that, some of the fringe players even longer, so if theyre not still fit after a 60 min run out against some youths we have a big issue with training. Orsi, Pepple & Simmonds have had about an hour of football between them this month they should be as rested as they ever need to be already.
