Even without bus replacement services, is there a worse away day in League Two this season than Colchester? I don’t think there is.

Barrow.

Ground and town both shíte but at least you have the option of stopping off in the lakes. For it’s complete lack of anything of interest whatsoever I think Colchester just trumps it for me.

Isn’t Colchester officially the oldest town in the UK? Although some are older, it’s just they have the official bit of paper.

It’s an awful away day experience and to be fair, it doesn’t seem much better for home fans.

Isn’t there an army prison in Colchester?

Oldest town in the UK and the military glasshouse is there. One of the reasons why I decided not to join the army in the end when I was thinking of dropping out as a student.

I was at the University of Essex in Colchester 1980 to 1983. Only been back for a Town game in 1990 and Sudbury v Brentford in the FA Cup. We spent a few hours there in 1993 on the way to see Town at Ipswich in the same competition. There were too many of us for their comfort when we went into the Red Lion so we had a function room to ourselves.

Plenty in the city for history buffs but the ground is too far away. It was an excellent boozing town at one time but I doubt that the pubs in New Town and on Hythe Hill are still there. I might have a mooch around if we get there early enough as there is a regular bus service to a point not too far from the ground.

We should have had a far more active social scene at the uni in the early 80s but activities were curtailed because the area and other Essex towns were infested by the far-right and our overseas students were frequently attacked. Ordinary students too for that matter.

Hated the place ever since to be honest. Its why I've rarely been back.

I was offered a choice of sentence  -  20 years in the glasshouse or 1 year season ticket for Colchester - I should be out soon.
