It used to be called soccer here but it fell out of favour and is now regarded as an Americanism, even though they took the term from us. Other countries use the term too, but generally where something else is football.

Do you find the term a reasonable alternative to football or is a blastphemy?

For me, its football. always will be, you kick the ball with your foot, the two key components that underpin the sport.

Does make me chuckle when Americans militantly demand it be called soccer when half their teams have FC in their name.

It was coined by the FA back in the early 20th century, I seem to recall, to differentiate between the eggchasers and our game. Understandable that the Yanks would use the term to differentiate between their game (with a ball which almost nobody kicks) and ours.

I'm not going to get uppity with the use of either term as both are valid. Anybody in the UK who calls it soccer, however, obviously doesn't have the first idea about the game.

Football of course, always grates particularly when Sky use "Soccer Saturday", etc. They should know better.

Also makes me laugh that they call it American Football!

How often is the foot used in that? Should be called American chuckandchaseball.
