Other countries use the term too, but generally where something else is football. Understandable that the Yanks would use the term to differentiate between their game (with a ball which almost nobody kicks) and ours. I'm not going to get uppity with the use of either term as both are valid. Anybody in the UK who calls it soccer, however, obviously doesn't have the first idea about the game.
