The thing about mentioning Groves is that he was just an outlier - must have sinews and muscles of steel to have avoided injury in the way he did. That must just be a genetic thing, the opposite end of the scale to players who pick up muscle injuries all the time.

Other players like Tony Ford were tough and missed very few games during their careers, but you have to say that you don't get many like that these days and there aren't even many top level players who haven't suffered a relatively serious injury, requiring a month or more out.

An ex pro I know has told me in no uncertain terms that he couldn’t cope with the standards of fitness that are demanded nowadays.

Furthermore, what would the rest of a squad think if one player was allowed to have say, 80% of the level required yet was still only fit enough for the odd 20 minute cameo.

It's all part of good man management. If you could get an 80% Max Wright playing in 80% of the season surely that is better for everyone than a pushed to the limit Max not even playing in 10% of the season?

How do you think a player that is pushed beyond their limit and breaks down feels?

I know a lad exactly like that who was pushed not physically but mentally to their limit and has now found their level in non league even though he was offered another contract in a Premier League under 23 squad.
Professional football is demanding in many ways and whilst we all want Max, as a local lad, to make his mark, the club can’t be run on sentimentality.

Pete makes a great point there on Max Wright

Ledley King is a great example in that he basically never trained at Tottenham for years due to his chronic injury problems but that never stopped him racking up 100s of premier league appearances.

Except Max Wright isnt Ledley King

If he wasnt from here he wouldnt be having this discussion.

I feel for him, but he is not cut out for full time football clearly

[quote=672]The fitness coaches are trying to get every ounce out of the players which only makes them more likely to have a strain or muscle injury because they are so finely tuned.

Look at players in the past Joe Waters was mentioned the other day in a thread saying he hardly missed a game well be was not on his own Paul Groves used to play every minute of every game and he never got injured , he played 68 games the season we went up via the play offs.

I am sure if Max Wright was given a little leeway on the training field he might not pick up so many injuries it's worth a try .

Other players have gone through their careers not being as fit as most other players but they performed well and were nearly always available,

Daily Thompson the decathlon   once said when he was winning all those gold medals he was always on the edge of being ill when 100% fit it was a very fine line.

Would these players have a slight drop in their performance if granted a little easier time on the training pitch well maybe but at least they would be available and not always on the injured list .

You make some good points Pete.

BUT

I believe this is already happening. The vests that the players wear during the games are also worn every training session and the results are monitored continually throughout the session. If the technology indicates that a player is looking like he is almost "out of gas", he will be removed from the session, rested or given other work.

That was later on in his career when they realised he didn't have any cartilage in his knee. He was injured more than not after that even without training.

Max isn't the same at all, he has a different injury every month. He's been an influence in about 5, maybe 10 games in his career.

Max has influenced a lot of games but unfortunately most of them have been in a Boston or Scarborough shirt.

At this time of the season how many players are fully fit and niggle free? Look at Efete, out injured with a hamstring injury and surprises everyone by declaring himself fit before facing his former employer, bagging himself a goal and assist in the process.

So was Matt LeTissier.

He'd have to change his name.
