Hi,

Some of you will have been communicating with my Dad for many years, both on this forum and in some cases outside of this chat room. Dad had been fighting Cancer for the past six years and had defied the odds on numerous occasions, sadly on Tuesday 1st Feb he lost his fight. he passed very peacefully and I was able to be with him. I hope that I will be able to log in and view any responses.

If anybody wishes to make contact privately, then please email me mattjswindells@yahoo.co.uk

Hi Matt,

Sorry for your loss.

Your father was quite a character. Others on The Fishy knew Roger far better than I did but, rest assured, he will be much missed on here and certainly never forgotten.

Awful news.

Although not everyone agreed with him at times, he was a well respected poster on here and his input will be sadly missed.

RIP.

Ipswin was certainly quite vocal at times in his opinions, espeically surrounding Hurst, but I am sure he was very vocal because he was very passionate about the club as we all are.

Matt I am very sorry for your loss. My condolences to you and your family.

As others have touched upon he was certainly a character and although I’m relatively new on the forum we had our disagreements. However, that is the beauty of forums like this for people who don’t want an echo chamber for their own opinions.

RIP Ipswin - another Mariner gone too soon!

Very sad - RIP Swin - who was, I think, a member of the email list precursor to the Fishy of the mid-90s.

Much to differ with his views at times but that's the joy of free speech, he will be missed.

Yes, very sad.  He said that he was very ill over a long time.  Still a shock to the family when it happens.

His views on Town were different from most posters.  However, all views should be welcomed t9 add to any debate.

I noted the book that he has written set in Amsterdam.  It was original and well-reviewed.  I will buy it at some stage.  And remember Ipswin made it possible.

Swin was one of the first people I ever encountered online. He was one of the very first people to start communicating about gtfc in the very early days of mass participation internet. predating myself (It was the Wild West then, no Google, no Facebook, no Youtube; no mobiles or tablets, just email, chat rooms and Usenet, all on Dial-Up Networking and IE4/Netscape). I don't think I ever met him in the flesh but his enthusiasm undoubtedly played a part in kindling my own interest in using this Internet "thing" to spread the gtfc word. A sad loss.

Never nice to hear that a fellow Mariner has been promoted to a much higher place and I was only thinking the other day that I hadn’t seen one of Swin’s curt and to the point posts of late.

With his loss we lose one of the forum’s more “colourful” and controversial characters and thus the forum will be poorer without his criticisms of our current performances and management but PH may sleep a little easier.

Condolences to the family and RIP Swin.

This is very sad news indeed and condolences to the family.

I met him several times over the years and struck up a good friendship with him. He often sent me private messages of support and kindness, aside of posting on this forum pearls of wisdom, leaving many a scar.

Will miss his dry sense of humour, and what was so often an insightful alternative view.

Rest in Peace my friend.
Kindest Regards

As many others, often we didn’t see eye to eye, but he was always true to his own beliefs and I had nothing but respect for him as a poster because of that.

Rip Swin, I am sure as big a character in life as he was a poster on here. The world is a duller place without those characters In it and this forum will forever miss those quick to the point, pull no punches posts.

Hope those angels are wearing black and white mate.

I am so sad of the passing of a fellow mariner who I was always happy to call my friend we only met up at the footy but his great sense of humour gave the match that extra enjoyment when I was Sat  next to him.
I enjoyed reading his book which he promised to sign it for me but we never got to meet up for that to happen at least I have a memory of him him on my book shelf.

Swin as he liked to be called will be missed by a lot on here even if you agreed with his comments or not but nobody can deny his passion for our great club.

RIP my friend I will never forget you.

Very sad news.

Swin was one of my favourite posters and someone I referred to as the grit in the oyster, which produced many a pearl of wisdom. Very forthright and feisty in his views.

We had a brief exchange on PM about his love for Amsterdam and he gave me a list of places to visit when I eventually get there, so hopefully I can go to a bar and raise a glass in his honour.

RIP Swin.

Sorry for your lose Matt.

Never meet your dad in person, like most said did not see eye to eye will most on here, he had his views and stood by them and that I admire.
If everyone had the views this forum would be boring, his contributions to the The Fishy will be sadly missed.

Condolences to you and your family.

Rest in peace Swin another Mariner taken from the family.

I am really upset to hear this terrible news.

I am an aspiring author. It is hellishly difficult to get published and I reached out to him privately to ask if he had any words of advice. He very generously shared a number of contacts, tips and suggestions and tried to help me in every way he could.

He could come across on this forum as a bit of an old curmudgeon, but privately he was a kind, supportive and generous man.

It breaks my heart to think that he left this world with Town languishing in the middle of the fifth tier. He wont get to see, if it ever does happen, the club occupying it's rightful place much further up the football pyramid.

RIP old man. A true one off who will be greatly missed.

Sad sad news so sorry for your loss.

Swins been a great poster here over the years ever since the old electronic Fishcake days I've enjoyed his alternative take on events. It's the variety of views that's kept me coming back here day after day, year after year and swin has been a constant in that and will be missed.

Quoted from GrimRob
Swin was one of the first people I ever encountered online. He was one of the very first people to start communicating about gtfc in the very early days of mass participation internet. predating myself (It was the Wild West then, no Google, no Facebook, no Youtube; no mobiles or tablets, just email, chat rooms and Usenet, all on Dial-Up Networking and IE4/Netscape). I don't think I ever met him in the flesh but his enthusiasm undoubtedly played a part in kindling my own interest in using this Internet "thing" to spread the gtfc word. A sad loss.

I remember joining a town mailing list as a nipper in about 1999, just as I had become aware of the internet for the first time. I can’t quite remember if you were running it Rob, but you were certainly around, as was Swin. Like you, I never knowingly met him, but it’s a sad day to lose someone that I have associated with Town for so long.

A unique and remarkable character, Swin, in that he remained thoroughly likeable without ever really being affable in nature. There aren’t many people who can pull that off.

RIP Swin

Condolences to his family. An often extreme character in expressing his views and agree or disagree a character that's been around for many years on football forums and one that will be missed. When it comes to the internet you don't know a person's own circumstances but you mostly remember their posts which in this case were certainly memorable.

Very sad news. I had the pleasure of meeting Swin on several occasions, the last time was in the Orange Tree at Braintree. He looked ‘weathered’ 😁 that day, with long hair, many, including KLM, didn’t recognise him at first but he told us he wasn’t having his hair cut until he had beaten cancer!

Many on here referenced his posts which I was convinced were not necessarily hard opinion, merely he knew it was winding some people up. I bet he was pissing himself about how it easy it was at times 😁

I saw above someone posting about Swin’s knowledge of certain ‘shops’ in Amsterdam. He certainly loved it there.

He was a great guy to chat with over a beer, he had opinions but also was a good listener too.

Rest In Peace Swin

Condolences to all his family and close friends

Quoted from grimsby pete
I am so sad of the passing of a fellow mariner who I was always happy to call my friend we only met up at the footy but his great sense of humour gave the match that extra enjoyment when I was Sat  next to him.
I enjoyed reading his book which he promised to sign it for me but we never got to meet up for that to happen at least I have a memory of him him on my book shelf.

Swin as he liked to be called will be missed by a lot on here even if you agreed with his comments or not but nobody can deny his passion for our great club.

RIP my friend I will never forget you.

Condolences to you and his family Pete. Swin certainly livened up even the most mundane of threads. A "popcorn at the ready box office" Fishy poster and will be greatly missed..

Sorry for your loss, haven’t seen Swin for years - did meet up a few times a few years back - can’t say always agreed - and he did love a good wind up/rub people up wrong way - what isn’t questionable was his love and passion for Grimsby Town.

Always sad to lose a fellow Fishy, especially such a long-standing one. As many have said he was a polarising sodomist sometimes, but this place would not be where it is without that. RIP Mariner Ipswin.

RIP Swin a real character and probably the best ever WUM to grace this site . Like most other posters I crossed swords with him on more than one occasion but whenever I logged on and saw he’d posted it was always a must read . Swin gave it out by the bucketful but he could take it too. I’ve read through the comments and I’m so pleased John Fenty took the time to pay tribute because some of spats those two had were comedy gold a few years back . Thanks for the memories Swin . Just seen this and am sending my condolences to Matt and the family.

I first ran into Swin on the old Electronic Fishcake and it's fair to say we did not see eye to eye. He invited myself and marinerjase to meet him and discuss our differences over a pint before a game at Cambridge in Slades first spell in charge. It was only on meeting him that we realised that actually he was a really nice bloke with a great if a little dry sense of humour. We met up as often as we could at matches including a great session just before the play-off final in Cardiff and a couple of great afternoons at the Bull in Irthlingborough before watching my daughter demolish Diamond Burgers at Nene Park. He liked his Belgian beer and the Mariners and I'm proud to say I called him a friend.

Goodbye Swin

Awful news, as others, I met swin on the Electronic Fishcake, I think he attended the first meet 20+ years ago and we shared a pint at a Cambridge away game. A true Gent and I always enjoyed his humour, the fishy will be a poorer place for his loss.

Condolences to his family

Really sorry to hear this. I fell for his wind ups on multiple occasions and doesn't seem right getting a glorious last minute win without him appearing to say it meant nothing and we were just lucky and still excrement. Forum will definitely miss his unique contribution. Many condolences to his family and friends.

Sorry to hear the sad news about your dad Matt.  Even though his views seemed to differ somewhat from most posters on here, he was definitely a big part of the Fishy and one of the most vocal posters on the forum over the years.  RIP Ipswin.

Known him since we were the original few members of the old GTISC that BillO started back in 1998.

A sad loss indeed - a unique character.

RIP Swin.

Very sorry to hear this news. As many have already posted, Ipswin was a well voiced character. I didn't agree with him 100 % of the time and I could tell he like to needle people (loved it) . An excellent human. Will be very much missed on here. RIP and best wishes to his family

Very sad news.

Your father came across as 'one of a kind' on the Fishy. Many of his posts obliged me to challenge my own comfortable opinions on various GTFC issues.

Quite often I found myself thinking "well I don't agree with him, but he's not entirely wrong either".
Which is what a football forum should be all about. He will be missed.

Only just read today on Cod Almighty the sad news about Swin’s passing. There’ll be a big hole on here where he used to be. He’s been one of the mainstays since before this was the Fishy,

My thoughts are with you and your family Matt. I lost my dad the same way years ago so I can imagine what you might be feeling. It gets better over time.

RIP Roger

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.

Only just seen this... sad news

Swin was a real character - I never really knew if he was being serious or just winding us up but one thing for sure, it was never dull when he had something to say

He certainly got a reaction whichever it was and as much as some might have got on the wrong side of him, I think we all quite liked it when he was ranting away

I didn't realise when I first encountered him on here ( and on Grim Outlook too ) that my aunt was a very good friend of his wife ( they'd been close since they were young nurses together ) so my condolences will be passed on that way too if I can

No matter what you thought of his opinions, Swin passing away will be a massive loss to the Fishy

RIP Fellow Mariner

Good afternoon fine Mariners. Today I post under my own name and thank you all for the kind words and memories of the argumentative, opinionated old git that was my Dad. It was so nice for my mum, swins granddaughters and I to read your comments. I managed to make it up with a few mates all of whom have adopted Grimsby as a second team to the Dagenham match, and will be coming up for Boreham Wood. I will be on my Todd but will happily buy anyone who pops in a beer in the old man’s name. I will be in the Blundell park hotel from around 6pm.

Very sad news, the loss of one of our own.
Condolences to all the family.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Everytime we play, I find myself thinking “dad will be happy with that” or “ I bet dad willhave something sarcastic to say about that” I go to message him then remember he is not here anymore. One thing is for certain he will be looking down or up. willing the mariners on to promotion, yet still trying to find a way to say that Hurst is useless.

Can’t remember often sharing his views but on many occasion he’s convinced me he’s right  . I don’t get on here as often as the fish cake days, but when I do its to listen to different views than my own, that’s why its sadder for his passing. RIP fellow Mariner.
