Thought I would start a new thread on this rather than hijack the thread on Favourite Concerts/Gigs.

After graduating from the Sunday night disco at the Gardens, I started to go and see live bands there around 1975 - some school mates would bike to my house and we would then walk to the Gardens as I lived in the Hardys Road area. Bands I saw included:

Alquin - Dutch band - first concert I went to and was hooked thereafter.
Nutz - rock band from Liverpool - I saw from the other thread that they supported Queen but I did not go to that concert (unfortunately)
Sutherland Brothers - probably with and without Quiver!
Sailor
Dr Hook and the Medicine Show - one of the singers put his foot through the stage
Stranglers - as said on the other thread - a lively concert!

I am sure there were others but my memory is not that good - vague recollections of maybe Focus, Suzi Quatro?

I also remember waiting for a band called Silverhead to show up - was told their van had broke down and they would show up shortly but never did!

Happy memories of going to school with ringing ears the next day.

Who did you go see? It may help refresh my memory.

The Skids twice (and seeing them again in five weeks time)

Dexys Midnight Runners

Son of Stiff Tour - five bands on one bill

Sure there were others just can’t remember who, a bit too young to see many 🤷‍♂️🤦

Surprised nobody has said the sex pistols…that’s Grimsby’s spike island.

The amount of folk who claim to have been there, the winter gardens must’ve been as big as Earl’s Court back then…

I never had the pleasure of seeing many known bands in my day but did play plenty of gigs there for local gig nights and did supper INME…spent many a night at freedom though…sadly the nights are somewhat blurry to remember who dj’d…

This pretty much sums up my experience of the winter Gardens!

I did watch the Nanas there along with about 13 other people once while I was still at school but freedom and the bags was what the winter gardens were about  for me.

Gutted that it wasn't part of the touring circuit when I was a youth growing up. Aside from local bands there seemed to be very few gigs from touring bands at all in the local area during the late 80's/90's and until I moved away I always had to go to Hull or further afield for gigs.  I did see The Wildhearts at the Winter Gardens but that's it.

I actually was but have to admit it's a bit like a pub I visited in Valletta, the one oliver Reed died in.
The whole population of Malta were in there that night by all accounts.
Back to the Sex Pistols gig, I never did find out if it was true or an urban myth that they came out to find their van sprayed with GTFC.

Was that pub on Straight Street, otherwise known as 'The Gut'?

You could still see the spot where Phil Collins screwed down his drum kit years later.

I saw:

The Sweet - who left the stage after about 3 songs because some male private was spitting at them. There was a 'rock disco' that took over and we had a great night!

Magnum
Nazareth
Uriah Heep
Hanoi Rocks
Lindisfarne
Pallas, Solstice and Trilogy (triple header of new prog rock)

I have hazy memories of seeing The Pogues there but I could be mistaken.

The Gardens had a bit of a purple patch for gigs in the mid 80s when Solid Entertainments tried (successfully) to get a few bands to come but the crowds were very small. Steve Stanley (of Solid Ents) told me he just couldn't keep bringing bands in and not selling tickets so he kind of abandoned the idea.

House of Love

Had the chance to see The Pogues but having not heard of them prior and they were described to me as " an Irish folk band" I passed the chance of a ticket .

Also saw Rick Mayall do a gig there.

A really good double header one night with the Dangerous Brothers and The Rumble Band on the same night.

Never did see a band live there but once gave local lad Mike Oldham a lift there with some speakers in my Morris Marina, no idea who was on.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

Just read about the passing of Wilko Johnson, who I saw at the Gardens with Dr Feelgood.

He was a really good guitarist and songwriter with a very unique style. He played with his fingernails as he couldn't hold a plectrum properly.

He was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2013 and given mere months to live but soldiered on for another 9 years.

RIP.

Here's one of my favourites from them.
