That was funny, Nigel Clough post match saying he shouldn't have played Hewitt today as he didnt tackle his mate Vernam all day.
Trouble is Nigel, you played him at full back..try him at centre half..🤣

Kellan Gordon who he said should of played instead of Hewitt played for Derby County youth team 2014 to 2017 and signed pro terms 2017 to 2019.
Charles Vernam played for Derby youth team 2013 to 2015 and pro terms 2015 to 2018.
So they could have known each other 4 years longer then Hewitt and Vernam.
What Clough has to realize is Hewitt played excellent for us last season has played for 2 teams that have been relegated out of League 2.

If I was Cloughie I’d have a word with the idiot that signed him, picked him and then played him at full back. And kept him on all game despite not being happy with his performance.

Hewitt and Rollin were a great pairing for us. It was bizarre that Hewitt was signed and then they sent Rollin out on loan.

I’d be fuming if I was Elliott. It’s one thing for a manager to say he didn’t have a good game, fair comment, an honest assessment. But for him to mention possible friendships and insinuate that he’s let Vernam have a goal basically is an insult to a professional. I’d be banging on his door Monday morning seeking an explanation. It’s interesting too that Clough speaks of relationships in football, I mean it’s not like he’s made a career out of having one of British footballs most successful and popular managers as a father or anything is it?

So you signed a player who was class for us at centre back but woeful at right-back.
You then played him at right back, who’s fault is that?

Terrible management to play someone out of position then publicly lambast them for a poor performance. Even worse to then question their professionalism. Can't see Hewitt staying there long!

Clough has always been a funny one anyway…can’t help but think of his dad hadn’t been so good he’s be one of those lower league managers just ambling between clubs, never really doing much…flirting with being decent but occasionally being excrement. A bit ‘meh’.
Hewitt was decent at centre half with a decent player next to him, one half decent half a season isn’t something to put him in memorable territory really…

All the Mansfield fans are praising Clough for being outspoken and”telling it like it is”. They think he’s brilliant. All I can see is that he made a dreadful decision and covered it up by blaming a promising new player. From my perspective it’s shocking management. And we should be experts on that.

Reminds me of the time Andy Todd, whilst at Bolton, broke Phil Brown’s jaw with an ashtray for making disparaging comments about their previous manager. One Colin Todd.

It’s one thing to say it in a team meeting on Monday morning, quite another to do it in a press interview. Wouldn’t surprise me to see Hewitt leave after that.

Just seen Clough's post match interview on Quest, what a prat.

Couldn't agree more. He was particularly awful in central midfield. No vision at all and no technique. He was woeful at right back and did okay as a stopper at centre back only by keeping it simple, head and kick as he can't do anything else. Vernam will slaughter him every day at right full back and apparently did exactly that. I miss Charles Vernam, I understand we may have been able to sign him for 50k a few weeks ago. He's in the Bradford side now and would be insane in all honesty to drop to non league, there is a championship player in there IMO.

Technically you might be right but it's a huge step up in fitness and I don't think he could handle those physical demands. It's no surprise for me to see Burton flying high in League One. Against Scunthorpe the other week substituted players were doing weightlifting at the side of the pitch. Hasselbaink has definitely worked them hard physically but some players just can't push their bodies to that limit.

Clough is bang out of order
Not sure what he hopes to achieve making those statements in public.
If a player plays badly he probably knows it. And as a professional would expect criticism from his boss. But those are said behind closed doors.
End of the day Clough signed the player selected him to play and set the team up. While Clough is calling out performances he should start by looking in the mirror.

Hewitt joined to work for Clough I recall. I was disappointed to see him go, early in the season and so he has time to sort it. As pointed out for us he was a great center back but poor in other positions. One of the hardest personal attacks I have seen on an individual and he will need to get back in the good books quickly utm

Hewitt is the best CB we have had for a long time. excrement everywhere else. Should kick open Clough's door on Monday morning and punch him in the face. IMO
|
| In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions. Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them. GOD |

Well - I can see that Town fans think highly of Elliot Hewitt at centre back for us - so why don’t GTFC try to get him back on Monday morning (on loan)? Think Town offered him a new deal - but declined? Forgive him - will pay us back with interest (is my judgement).

A centre back with some pace and a goalscorer is what we’re missing.

Hewitt was a meh right back and an utterly anonymous CM. Good at CB though. If clough has watched him play then it doesn't say much about him that he played him RB, and if he hasn't watched him play well...

Someone ought to point out to Clough that another ex-Grimsby defender, a full-time fullback, hardly ever made a tackle either. Never needed to. Do you think he’s ever heard of John McDermott?

That’s not the point I was making. I’m just saying that you don’t have to make a tackle to be a good defender.
