Looking for any recommendations for a decent pub or restaurant (that's open during the day) that does decent grub.

It's my birthday in a few weeks and my brother is coming up from Surrey and wants to take me and my Mum out for something nice to eat on my birthday.

Anyone any decent recommendations?

You can never beat Steels although the menu is limited at the moment but evolving, you'll need to book early as well. We went with my mother a couple of days ago.

Went to Wetherspoons on the High St a couple of times recently and the service was shocking, first time we waited ages for the food and when it came it was not what we had ordered, second time we were two thirds of the way through our food and the drinks still hadn't come, I had to ask three times before they came.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

Went there for lunch a couple of years ago and it was OK. What we ate was a bit too salty.

That said, it was a midweek lunchtime and you can't really expect miracles from a restaurant in a small town when you're not eating prime time. Could well be very nice on an evening.

The Ocean down St. Peters ave was good the last time we went, but haven't been for a while.

We’ve never had a bad meal at Caistor Lakes or the Royal Oak in Holton Le Clay.

Relish or Figs are very good.
Miller & Carter for a decent steak but take plenty of cash.

My current fave restaurant is Sage in town. It used to be Swigs (Willie's in Grimsby) The menu is mainly European but the food is absolutely fantastic..

C'mon Tim Martin is having problems recruiting staff after stating before the referendum campaign that people who suggested this were doomsters.
And maybe he had problems with his microwaves for the food issues.
I wouldn't take anyone there for a meal, it serves a purpose for extremely average, cheap, quick food & even the beer selection & quality has declined dramatically.

Have booked somewhere not mentioned on here and somewhere I'd not even thought of going for a meal.

The Kingsway Hotel on Cleethorpes Seafront. It was recommended to me by a work colleague who went recently and said that it was superb. It's under new management apparently and they are spending ten of thousands of pound doing the whole place up.

It's not really that over expensive as they do a 3 course meal for £29.95, so looking forward to it.

I'll report back what it's like after I've been.

Sounds great Les. I've not been there for a couple of years myself, but I do hear good things about it. I think it's the cost of drinks that will hit your pocket harder than the food.

Have a great time, I'm sure you will.

For any future events, I would recommend The Ship at Barnoldby. We went there a few weeks ago and it was top notch.

We sometimes walk to Barnoldby from Bradley Woods and if you turn up there on a Sunday in walking attire, with a dog, you are gently steered into the beer garden. Little but up themselves we thought.

I'd heard they spent a lot of money renovating the Kingsway just before the pandemic hit. I've had some really good meals there in the past, but it tends to be at a weekend, where you're more likely to get the experienced chef working.

For future reference we both love the food at the New Inn at North Thoresby, well worth the drive out and cracking Sunday dinners too.

I went there a couple of weeks ago. (Early evening). Lovely meal and great service. Tasted even better because I wasn’t paying.

I can also recommend the Crown & Anchor at Tetney Lock. Plenty of choice from light bites to hearty comforting old favourites. They usually have 6 or 7 specials too.

Well, as it'll be my birthday meal, I won't be paying either.

Looking forward to it.

The Kingsway was superb. A bit more expensive that your usual pub grub but a set 3-course meal for £29.95 isn't too bad I don't think and the food and service was superb, well worth a visit.

TBH Les I think it is good value given the quality. Certainly worth spending a little more for an occasional treat. Glad you had a good time.
