After years of the club charging more money for the children sizes than the adult sizes (remember no VAT on children’s clothing) the club have finally adjusted the prices to rectify this…

Adult sizes - £43.99 (£36.66 + VAT)
Children’s sizes - £35.99

In reality it is still pretty disgraceful that a children’s shirt is only 67 pence less than an adult shirt but at least the prices are moving in the right direction.

I should add it’s an industry wide issue. Not just GTFC.

An example…
Bolton have launched their new Macron away shirt today. £48 for adults (£40 + VAT) and £40 for children. Disgraceful.

Nottingham Forest not much better at £50 (£41.66 + VAT) and £40.

I agree with you that it is a disgrace but as you’ve alluded to, it’s not just a GTFC issue. Similarly, a member of staff at work is only a size 5 and wears children’s trainers.

Football shirts are expensive for what they are when the shirt minus the badges etc can usually be picked up from the manufacturer for half the price.

At least we haven’t started doing what other clubs do by having ‘pro’ versions of the shirt that are exactly the same as the players’ shirts. I was astounded at Juve that they sold 4 types of shirt…the cheapest being €40 the most expensive being €120…lunacy…

My wife is size 5 and got some new trainers last year. On the way to the checkout with her adult size 5's she spotted some childrens size 5's cheaper and got those. The only difference between the 2 was that one of the pairs didn't have a word on it!

I don't know for certain but I imagine the club buys them in disproportionately.

Do you honestly believe that the cost to produce football shirts is proportional to the size of the garment? I'm no expert in fashion and the like but I suspect there are many other factors that make up the cost of an individual shirt than the size of the cloth that it is cut from... design costs, logistics, construction of the shirt, etc. etc. Lots of factors aside from the size. At the end of the day I expect the cost to produce a child or adult size shirt is almost identical.

I think it is great that the club factor in the VAT when pricing these shirts but you shouldn't expect much more than that for the reasons above. Let's not bash the club for something they have little control over

I’ve had an issue for ages about the club changing its kit every year. I get that it generates good money and excitement but it must be hard if you’ve got a couple of kids to kit out.

I would imagine the gross margin on the kit is quite high when I look at how much they mark down what they have left at the end of a season.

This ^

The difference between the cost of materials will be negligible. I’d guess the amount of material to make a 2xl shirt would almost be enough to make two small adult shirts.

The shirt might be but then there is a cost associated with the sponsors logo and our badge. That won't be included in your £3 figure.

We aren't selling them by the millions so shipment will spread over less units and you also have import duties to consider.

We may not pay those costs directly but they are there.

Why are childrens clothes VAT-free anyway? Fair enough if it's for school uniform, but apart from that is there a sensible reason why? (Alternatively, why aren't adult clothes VAT free?)
I'm not saying it's wrong, I'm just curious as to the reason behind it.

Adults can theoretically pay their own way. Only buy what they need.

Children can't pay their way so VAT on essentials such as clothes would penalise larger families. Imagine if you had septuplets and knew that you'd got an extra 20% to pay on all their clothes.

England shirts used to be decent value compared to most clubs. I was shocked to see the new one cost £70.

They used to have a bit of character when they were Umbro before we were consigned to endless Nike kits similar to all the other Nike international shirts.

Took my lad, 7 years old, to get the England kit a few weeks back. Shirt, shorts and socks, plus his name on the back, set me back £115.

Absolutely bonkers. That’s so far beyond affordability for so many families in this country, it really is scandalous.

As others have posted, the price of football shirts is a failure which goes beyond the game itself but in this day and age, a model which exploits poor people to make products poor people can’t afford just isn’t cricket.

£70 for an England shirt. I'm sure when I was a youth I got a full kit for about £30, was the 80s mind. My mate gets his son all the new England kits from dhgate.com at about 15 quid a pop. It's knock off stuff from China but having seen them myself, I couldn't tell the difference between it and the official shirt.

Had this discussion with my missus earlier. What parents spend on stuff for their kids is bonkers. Expectations for parties and activities are sky high. It’s hard not to comply when you don’t want your kids to be left behind. But I worry that we’re producing a generation of entitled people, and making it even tougher on people who can’t afford it. The price of some things is emotional blackmail.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.

Simple answer is, we are. I see it day in day out, similarly, parents similar to my age that were at the start of this are much the same.

The England shirt thing is odd, Umbro produced that really smart plain white shirt that looked like a polo shirt a few years back, they made a new, bespoke shirt for every player for every game to give them some sense of unique pride or whatever then sold them in the shops in souvenir boxes etc…they weren’t cheap but felt worth it. They changed their business model when they weren’t making enough cash and it seemed to lose the prestige.

Once upon a time England shirts, especially between say 2000 and 2010 were never more than say 20quid…Ashley’s empire helped out with that but now they’re ludicrously expensive.

The price of shirts on the whole is outrageous but as with most things related to football, it’s an exploitative nature sadly. I don’t blame GTFC, I don’t even blame the sodomist clubs, it’s a wider issue than simply a club charging too much…

Although, if anyone’s interested, Google Napoli…they’ve taken a very different route…

I tend to buy the training tops or polo shirts and did so for my lad.
Still showing support visually, but doesn’t become dated each year as noticeably.
Recently, I bought quite a bit pre season from the sale. It was nice to put money into the club knowing it would be spent wisely and get a bargain 😀

The wife was going away for a girly weekend.
I jokingly remarked  'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football'
'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

She said 'Well you already know how to play football'

In the end it's everyones choice if they pay silly money for something just because of the label or trend, and that includes football shirts. As said earlier you can't dismantle capitalism overenight, nor can you change us from being a must have it bunch of donkeys led by media, advertising and people who are famous for being famous into thinking this that or the other is a must have because someone else says it is.

I’ve had an issue for ages about the club changing its kit every year. I get that it generates good money and excitement but it must be hard if you’ve got a couple of kids to kit out.

I would imagine the gross margin on the kit is quite high when I look at how much they mark down what they have left at the end of a season.

Getting the new strip each year for your kids is a personal choice though isn't it? I know keeping up with other kids is a thing but my parents didn't buy me the new strip every season and I got on just fine growing up. We play in black and white stripes every season so the differences between shirts is hardly noticeable and you blend in with the rest of the supporters in black and white stripes. Even now when I can afford to buy the latest shirt each season I might only do it every other season, maybe buy a training top or a jacket in between when they go on sale.

Nobody is forcing you to kit out the entire family in the latest stuff.
