I thought they were allowed to drink water? Anyway, it's a load of nonsense as is all religion.

Amen to that!

Aye that's a great post Ginny and backs up a lot of how I approach it.

Fasting is something the body was designed to do.  You look at the top endurance athletes now and the vast majority of them train in a fasted state, often up to 16 hours.

The simplest explanation I can think of is that we eat an evening meal, then sleep.  Whilst sleeping our bodies are at their lowest demand.  We're spending as little energy (fuel/food) as possible during this.  We then wake up and still have a surplus of fuel/food in our bodies, yet we then eat breakfast and just put more fuel into our system for our body to burn through.

Fasting is horrible at first, it throws your body well out of sync as it's not used to it.  But after a while it genuinely becomes normal and the idea of eating breakfast has no appeal at all.   The human body is very adaptable and quickly settles into a new routine.

I suppose the difference is me as a bang average (at best) amateur athlete doing routine training as opposed to a high-performing elite athlete performing at the highest level in a competitive manner.  I'd guess the science transfers though, maybe just needs tweaking to suit needs.
