Chris I have friends living close to the main Nottingham to Derby line. Within half a mile of the house there were three crossing points. There have been several fatalities in the past couple of years (all confirmed as suicides bar one). Before lockdown Network Rail organised a meeting where the clear message was that they would close the lot if they could. It isn't surprising that they dont want those deaths on their record. One of the crossings has been upgraded with lights showing when its safe/not safe to cross. The expectation is that the others (all which follow public footpaths) will be closed. That line has London express trains using it four times an hour as well as cross country and local service trains amounting to over ten trains an hour.

Yes I was told that Ian, that Network rail would want all crossings (like the one you explained) closed mate, the crossing you’re on about is a red/green crossing which will have a telephone incase of failure (to ring the signaller) there is one at Healing UWC.

Some great contributions regarding this,thanks.
With the amount of incursions you can see why NR would want to close it.
The risk from their point is far too great.

It seems a lot of money to spend when there’s a bridge a few hundred yards away. Or are there that many people who would use Suggits Lane that it makes it worthwhile?

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.
