Hess playing for Crawley against Leeds today. Shielding the back four very well, we could do with him at the minute. Why did he leave?

Because that Tw@t Holloway thought he could get better and the board are tight bar stewards!!

Hess, Davis, Whitehouse would all walk into our team right now. I know we talk about the loss of Vernam, Clarke etc, but it was a huge mistake letting these go too.
In fact, gonna stick my neck on the line and say a fully fit Davis would be preferable to both Waterfall and Pollock. Can’t reLly remember him ever letting us down.

Good player Davis, Don't know if he's injured, but he doesn't seem to be getting any games for Morecambe. EDIT. Seems he played against Chelsea today.

Whether that’s true or not, we didn’t try and keep any of those out of contract players. We just saw it as an opportunity to save a bit of cash for a few months. Think the only one we retained was Max? Who won’t be on much and we know lives in the area and loves the club

Incorrect. If we gave him a new contract we would have had to pay him from 1st July. We released him and others to avoid paying wages during July, August & the first week of September.

Believe we made.offers to max, clarke and vernam, sort of. Ollie said something about he might being back some of those released, everyone assumed Hess or Davis, but both moved on. Ollie obviously had much better options in his contacts....hmmmm

Whether it was the EFL who screwed us over or we were just generally incompetent, probably the latter, of all the players released who we would've rather kept (Davis, Clarke, Vernam and Hess) we have downgraded quite spectacularly.
It is quite remarkable when you sit back and think about it how much we ballsed the job up in the summer and then the board/Holloway having the nerve to just brush it under the carpet and say "well, it's all very hard with Covid" sums it all up.

And I thought the main reason was that Hess missed pretty much a season through injury and it was readily accepted that keeping him on would be a risk under the circumstances.

Injured 28th January. Played 22 games for Crawley this season. Thought he was an excellent defensive midfielder. The amount of tackles he won and often covered for full back while we was on the attack. Missing him now

Crawley beat Leeds 3 - 0. They do something we don't, they shoot when they have an opportunity. I couldn't see us scoring any of those goals they got. We'd take one extra touch to find the perfect shot and then not get any.

2nd lowest budget in the EFL and they can find players that have pace and skill; score goals and actually put in dangerous free kicks. They looked head and shoulders above us. It's so galling.

There have been some appalling decisions by the people who run GTFC for the last 20 years. We were playing ok at the end of last season, not brilliant but with a few decent additions we would have been fine. But no, the only objective was cost saving to the detriment of everything. The only surprise about this season is that so many people seem surprised

I was disappointed to see Hess leave, thought he was the best CDM we had - better than Rose, Clifton etc I wasn't too sure why Davis left, but I think him with Pollock would be a much more solid defence ... I thought Whitehouse was poor, very underwhelming and didn't really offer much except running about a bit

Would have kept Hessenthaler as felt we would do well to get better than him in that protecting role, clearly if he wanted to move back closer to home there's not much you can do about it.
Wasn't bothered about Davis and Whitehouse leaving but we've definitely downgraded on them. Whitehouse was fairly improved under Holloway and we could use his forward running at the minute. Might have been limited technically but he was good for a high press and running beyond the front men.

They also signed Gavin Gunning after us! He did well for Lincoln, so I was under the impression he'd add some bit and drive but injury probably affected him. He doesn't start for FGR very often, and I think if I had the choice to warm our bench or be on more money warming FGR bench I know which I would choose. There are loads of players who don't perform here but do elsewhere - Jamille Matt for example. For relevance to this thread, Hessenthaler, though, performed at a solid 7.5 every single game. He did the dirty mopping up that our less mobile midfielders couldn't. If we had Hessenthaler he would be Hurst's ideal player (similar to Craig Clay-ish).. add in any one of Clifton, Hewitt or Spokes and you have an immediately stronger core than what was on show on Saturday. Rose shirked every tackle, Clifton (sadly) is limited but works hard, and Hewitt is good but not as mobile as Hess. Anyway that's what I think!

Hess was about 1000x better than Clay. A hell of a lot more mobile and had a lot more quality on the ball, plus could take decent corners/free kicks. I always thought Clay was overrated. He ran around a lot, kept the shape of the team but was very, very limited. Given what we know about Hurst though, Hess would certainly have been his sort of player.

Clay in the main was crap when he played here, Hewitt isn consistent enough in midfield, on Saturday I forgot he was playing.

I thought the reverse - I thought Hess was overrated and Clay underrated! Hess just got on my nerves in the end with the constant backwards and sideways passing when we could have gone forward. Either would walk into the current side though and be the star performer we are that bad.

I suspect their close proximity to London has a big impact on the type of players they can attract. We just don't have that pull.

Hess’s dad Andy used to play with John Yems, think that’s why he ended up at Crawley

Yeah, I do realise there are mitigating circumstances. We should however make ourselves more attractive, and hopefully we now will.
