I would play Hewitt at the back, I feel that he adds a bit of pace, plus he has done well, when played there earlier in the season.
I would employ a 3- 4-2-2 system.
My team would be :-
McKeown Russell Battersby
Hendrie Waterfall Hewitt Habergham
Spokes Clifton
Jackson Jnr. Pollock.
I know it's a bit defensive.

If we start with the same squad and no new signings we should go back to basics and a 4-4-2
Mckeown
Hendrie Waterfall Pollock Habergham
Morais Spokes Rose Wright
Hanson (if fit) Gibson
2 proper wingers who can cover the previously exposed full backs. 2 strikers to hopefully make us a more attacking team and to hold the ball up front better. Habergham in front the start may be a gamble but we need to be looking forward with a pass from full back. Rose only in as Clifton injured. Hopefully some new faces in though by the weekend, especially in CM and up front

Very little chance of a result against Southend as they’re the in form team at the moment.

A big part of that form is that they’ve beaten Grimsby, Scunthorpe and Barrow...we’ve beaten Scunthorpe and Barrow. It’s a season defining game, coming back from a defeat against them will be very difficult. PH needs to earn his corn, watch the videos, polish the turd and hope Southend slip on it...

I back Hurst to keep us up still but I'll be seriously questioning his judgement if Green starts the next match. Even if we don't bring any strikers in.
It's alright picking a system to try and get a result, but its no use if you don't have (or select) the players to be able to play it. Even if you're going to start Green, if it's as a lone striker then we might as well have had an extra defender instead and played 5-5-0.

I was amazed and honestly gobsmacked when he started with him yesterday. Hurst said he had seen the team for the last few weeks, and of course he saw him first hand last week yet he still started. Baffling. Surely he should have gone with say Gibson or at least anybody who is going to try to take part in the match. I don't want Green to play for us again. I agree we would actually be better starting with 10 men.

And do you really think Hurst can manage that for this Saturday. I don’t, he will in the next few matches but not for this one I fear.

If Hurst doesn't manage to get anyone through the door. It has to be: Macca Hendrie Waterfall Pollock Habergham Hewitt Spokes Morais Bennett Wright Gibson
Holding midfield 2 of Spokes and Hewitt will give protection to rocky back 4 and importantly they have bundles of energy.
Let the front 4 stay as high as possible and hit on the counter.

And what qualifications and experience of managing a football team (not a Sunday League team), do you have that makes you think you know better than PH? I am really amazed at all the moaning already, PH has only been here two weeks, FFS we still have half a season to go! Proper supporters of GTFC stand up and #back Paul.

I would drop Macca for a start. Too many comedy goals. It must really impact the confidence of the back 4 knowing that any shot on target has a great chance of going in. It's not as if he commands his area or distributes the ball well. I would bring Russell in.
The Waterfall/Pollock pairing needs breaking up. It is abysmal. Hewitt played well there a few games ago so I would start him there unless we sign a new CB.
We may as well try Gibson in place of Green, but we really need new strikers asap.
Start with Wright, obviously. Moralis too. But I think we need two new midfield players this week too.
Russell
Hendrie Waterfall Hewitt Habergham
Moralis New New Wright
New New
We can but hope.

Though Green is not up to it he's not the only one though is he? I wouldn't be that bothered never to see Williams, Rose and Bennet pull on a Town shirt again, I notice Tilley wasn't selected yesterday that may confirm the suspicion that he's a complete fanny as well.

| In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions. Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them. GOD |

Those four senior players (Green, Bennett, Williams and Rose) have been absolutely atrocious given their pedigree. To some extent Green should not be considered in the same category as I think he's simply past it. Why the other three have been so woeful is a complete conundrum.

Yes, I think most of us feel that way. He brings pace to the back 4. I guess the problem is that we have sodomist all in midfield at the moment so he has to play there. If we do get a new midfielder this week then releasing Hewitt to play in the back 4 would be a bonus.

Well he is hopeless as a central midfield player and dire as a full back so I guess you are right! To be fair I do agree he looks ok at centre back - he has more to do, keeps his concentration better and has a bit of pace to make up for mistakes. Pollock and Waterfall looked shot yesterday.

Well let's close the fishy down then if we need to have managed in the football league to be able to question management decisions?

....because.. 1) I've been watching Matt Green play for a season and a half. Longer than Hurst. 2) football managers aren't always right (they get things wrong & make mistakes, hence they lose matches & get sacked). Do you think Green should be starting for us? What does he bring to the team?

An appalling goalscoring record. A lack of shots. There was a post on twitter stating green last had a shot on 1st dec! Cant believe you are being criticised for dissing a rubbish striker. Ffs

I don't think anybody said they know better than PH. It's just fans talking how bad we are at the moment and nearly everybody have said it's not Hursts fault.
