So that's Windsor, Taylor, Edwards and Gomis gone.
I assume that means we can replace them with four new loanees? Or is there a limit to have many loanees you can bring in during any given season?

Morton went back too. Only 2 from the 7 remain. And both started Hurst’s first match back.

Yes, unfair to blame these kids. They will have been told when signing that there would be experience playing alongside and that never happened. Yes we want them away and replace them but only because they are square pegs or not ready for first team responsibility. If they had no ability they would not be at any club.

Had a little technical quality on the ball, but not enough to make up for his woeful lack of mobility, strength and desire. I’m not sure if he wasn’t trying or wasn’t up to it, but he’s nowhere near this level yet.

I think he had some pace, and he played well in that away win.
But other than that not a great deal to shout about.
Mind you, given the state of the club and the squad it would be hard for any of these young players to excel.

It's fair to say Mr Hollowords didn't develop these kids one bit. They were chucked into a shitshow that they probably didn't understand.

That is what happened. How it happened is open to conjecture but other than curiosity I couldn't care less. These lads were catapulted out of their comfort zone and it was never going to work. Anyone any idea of the current squad size after all these returnees?

Good Another one of Holloways gone.
|
| In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions. Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them. GOD |

I'll be honest I don't think he's gonna make a career of it at a higher level doesn't seem mobile enough to me, in my mind he's miles behind Benson and Embleton. Good luck to him but not sure where they get the highly rated bit from.

Agreed, I gamble this guy will be successful. Under hollowheads management few of these players have much chance. The other Loanees (except Edward), were poor, I suspect Taylor will come good for somebody, Utm

Bloody Hell what on earth was Holloway thinking to have such a massive squad and that's after five have returned to their clubs.

Lol how can we still have 32 players (admittedly 5 of those are youth team players who have been given a squad numbers).
We've released or sent back six players in a month so our total was 38!!!

I agree with the sentiments, but you have to wonder for a lot of these players is joining a Premier League club doing them any good? They are in their early twenties before they are inevitably released as not being good enough for a Premier League first-team player, and they are not used to playing in games where winning means everything. I think this is what a lot our loanees have lacked - the will to win at all costs - and they have continued to pass the ball around a few yards to the back and to the side without a care in the world. Passing, creative football is the way forward but I hope any other loanees we bring in have more fire in their belly.

Regardless of who has been recalled or sent back or released, it is all making PH's job a lot easier. If the decision is taken away from him, then thats a few less worries as to who he wanted rid of.
It does surprise me that he hasnt signed anyone yet though. The longer he leaves it, the more likely the better players who were/are available will be snapped up by other teams leaving us the dregs again. Where have we seen that before?

Yeah weve got a big squad but it can be exaggerated by just looking at who's got a squad number cant it. I've crossed out the players who are either YT's or u16s above. And the ones in bold are 1st year pros so would realistically not be expected to be first team regulars unless an exceptional talent. So that leaves 23. And even that includes Jock Curran who hasn't been included by any of our last 3 managers at any stage, has seen a YT centre-mid ahead of him this season (Khouri) and will surely be released at the end of the season.

My thoughts entirely about Taylor. A neat and tidy player with some decent technique, but played most of his time as if it was a training game or an u23s game. You could say that's to be expected as that's all he's played previously (u23 football) but that highlights the importance of youngsters going out to get games in the FL, or that the old reserve system was better suited for more competitiveness and senior opposition.

Do you think the way the u23s set-up across the country works is benefitting the game & the players within it? IMO it looks to me like there are plenty of promising players being kept in a state of limbo when they could be out actually developing.

Under 23's football is pants football, they play like they are subbuteo players..nobody tackles..Bring back a proper reserve league with 23 teams in it and let the under23 join in with experienced pros trying to get fit..always remember an interview with Ryan Giggs who said he learnt so much in reserves trying to not get booted into the stand by some 35+ yr old..Made him a stronger player.

Probally would have done far far better under the guidance of Hurst than fullashit Holloway....? Oh well, more space to replace.

I don't think it is, no. The problem that's so often talked about is bridging the gap between a player finishing his YT and signing pro, to breaking into the first team. But the PL2 and the u23 leagues dont solve that. All they do is repeat what those players have been doing for the 2 years previous - playing games against other kids of similar age. Yes they're allowed a few overage players in the u23 lineups but it should be the other way around shouldn't it, a few kids playing amongst a team of more experienced players, or at least half & half, like it used to be in the days of reserves leagues. Then the young lads are exposed to playing against seasoned pros and gradually adapt to the mentality and physicality they might need to succeed in the senior game. What causes the biggest issue is the massive youth squads that the big clubs have by stockpiling any half-decent prospect they can get their hands on. So they end up with so many young pros at 19/20 they dont know what to do with them. Loads go out on loan, some have lots of loan spells and never get settled anyway, and most get to 25 having not played more than 50 professional games at any club. When realistically if they'd have gone to an Academy lower down the pyramid, they might be more likely to be exposed to senior football and develop the mentality needed. Or at least be closer to the first team once they sign pro. Not sign pro and then stay in an u23 set-up completely detached from the first team, effectively just a repeat of their YT years like I said. The EPPP doesn't help. Well, it maybe helps the big clubs hoover up the talent. There's rules on how close/far away someone is allowed to live to be signed by a particular academy (varies at different age groups). But the biggest clubs will just offer to buy said family a house to move them within range. Needs to be smaller caps on sizes of academy squads. Go back to a reserve league so these u23s can mix with senior pros. And tell the PL clubs, the PL and the FA cronies that if they want their youngsters to get match experience, then play them in their own bloody team. If not, release them.

The EFL sold their right to keep all these kids by accepting their annual golden egg from the golden goose . The EEEP of whatever it’s called is going to give us a World Cup winning team in the near future by giving the best prospects the best coaching apparently. Not looking too good with the current England team I’d say though . Oh and don’t forget poor old Chelsea who use their EEEP set up to sell about £100M of players per season they’ve been stockpiling for a few years to help with their Financial Fair Play .

The same was said about the Premier League too. Nearly 29 years and we’re still waiting for that World Cup.

I do think it is difficult for young, inexperienced players to succeed in central midfield roles. So much to learn there and so easy for the game to pass you by, especially if your team is on the back foot. It's no surprise that young tyro sorts who break through at a young age tend to be attackers where the odd slip up or anonymous display is just shrugged off. There aren't many Steven Gerrards around.
Unimpressive though Taylor et al have appeared, you can't be too surprised when they've been bunged in as the backbone of an ever-changing and poorly-performing team, often with little experience around them.
A few will probably go on to have reasonable careers at a higher level than us but I agree, the difference between the loanees from Burnley last season and the current bunch has been night and day.
I'd expect Hurst to be looking for steady-Eddie 6/10 experienced players proven at this level in the transfer window - providing we actually sign some players and don't just hang around to see if the season is likely to be abandoned during the next month or two.

The England team is looking considerably less 'glamorous' now than the 'golden generation' (Messrs Beckham, Lampard, Ferdinand etc). BUT look at 2018 World Cup, this team seem to be capable of playing with the 3 best national teams in the world (Belgium, France and Germany imo). Kane, Sterling, Rashford, Sancho, Grealish, Rice, Henderson, etc etc,

He's signing for Burton.
Oh wow, they really are in deep trouble, they are currently 8 points from safety already, and he struggled in our team against league 2 players

I don't see him making a material difference to their relegation battle.

Just the sort of player you want in the trenches for a relegation battle. intercourse knows what they’ve seen, he’s excrement and he’s a proper Fanny

As soon as we came up against a decent side in the semifinals we went out very tamely. I just don’t see our team having the mentality to win a tournament. We rely on set pieces so much it’s a joke .
