Congratulations to whoever started this rumour because it has stuck on the basis of nothing.

Hanson is our best striker and for what he does, nobody comes close in this league. Do you really think Hanson will get a better wage at his age, with his recent injuries and in the current climate?

If we paid him off, give me a realistic target who would be better than him.

On fixed term contracts(2 years for Hanson) you can claim mileage up to 1 year and 364 days after which is it the deemed a permanent place of work and you are classed as commuting at which point it can no longer be claimed. 45p a mile for the first 10k then 11p after that

I think changing the narrative of this thread to “who knows the most about the HMRC” is a good thing as it steers it away from the rank stupidity of paying off the one player who potentially will make a goal scoring difference when he returns.

I just hope some Championship Director of Football gets a bit jittery around midday and tables a massive bid for Mattie Pollock.

Can’t see anyone coming this way today.

Can someone please explain to me how the club benefit from ‘paying up’ James Hanson’s contract?

Because the first £30k of redundancy money is tax free. So when you pay up a player/make him redundant both the player and the club save money as neither have to contribute tax or national insurance.

Not stating there’s any truth in the rumour though.

No. It's because you are paying them "damages" - the actual loss of post-tax and NI deducted income. It's not redundancy money. it's damages for unpaid wages. The two are very different.

On the other posts on taxable expenses, anyone claiming 45p per mile for home to work travel on a fixed term contract needs to be hoping that HMRC don't pick up on it because it's definitely a taxable benefit unless your home is also your contractual place of work. I think they would probably go for the employer first for unpaid deductions.
