We haven't had a "Match Thread" in ages so I thought I'd start this one early

Town boss Ian Holloway will take his full 22 man squad to face Cleethorpes Town on Saturday (12:30 pm).

The Town squad to face Cleethorpes Town

Alhagi Touray Sissay, Bilel Mohsni, Cameron Painter, Duncan Idehen, Elliott Hewitt, George Williams, Harry Clifton, Ira Jackson, James Hanson, James McKeown, James Tilley, Jock Curran, Joe Starbuck, Joey Hope, Ludvig Öhman, Luke Hendrie, Luke Waterfall, Matt Green, Mattie Pollock, Max Wright,    Montel Gibson, Ollie Battersby.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

What’s quite remarkable about that squad is there is no one with a first name starting later than O in the alphabet. Where’s all the Tommie’s and the Willies and the like? Sort it Holloways

Batch, Crombie, Moore K, Wiggington, Cumming, Waters, Bonnyman, Ford, Emson, Drinkell, Whymark. Love you all, You are the reason I'm on here. You've had help from Todd, Handyside, Futcher P, Groves, Mendonca, Macca etc etc etc. Up The Mariners!!!!!!!!!

Quite a few "first name debuts" for the club.  Can't remember us fielding any Iras, Montels, Tourays or Bilels in our history..

Maybe it's an omen for a top half finish.

Have 0 expectations from a GTFC perspective to be honest...our team will likely consist of a mix of youth, brand new signings and trialists with the few established first teams players we have fit.

Cleethorpes on the other hand will have their settled squad and be bang up for it...good opportunity for some of their players to show what they can do.

Looked like a bit of a soft free-kick goal for Town but not complaining.

Nearly 1-1 there.

Anyone else struggling to hear the commentary clearly. I can hear the players and management shouting quite clearly but the actual commentary seems very low and muffled.

First goal was a Williams free kick.

Second was Green intercepting a poor goal kick and scoring.

Williams scored the first, very good strike, Matt Green the second after a defender played it straight to his feet in the penalty area.

Is that our Jock Curran listed on their bench? Have I missed something? Is he on loan there or something?

Steady half on a tricky pitch. The trialist has been bobbins.

Impressed by Hope and Starbuck, both don’t look out of place.

Funny way of showing the game time under the scoreline

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

I don't think the wind is helping but the game looks very scrappy.

Entertaining game but wind caused a lot of difficulties. I don't think a lot was learnt but Hewitt,Pollock,Waterfall and Idehen had good games.  Disappointing from Wright and Clifton but overall a good workout.

Should they be out of their depth playing against a Northern Premier League South East Division Club?

Too early to make too many judgements and wind and pitch didn’t help. Williams looked good and I thought joey hope did well. But I think it proved we are still half a dozen experienced pros short of where we need to be. And I don’t think that’s new news to anyone.

Just saying what I've seen, they could become world beaters after a few matches and I hope they do, but in the short time they were on the field looked miles away from the men's game in two weeks time, just saying

I thought that a few of the new players were behind the others in fitness levels?   This would make a difference, especially in the first game and in bad weather conditions.

Fair enough but to say they looked "out of the depth" is a bit over the top given 25 minutes plus current  fitness levels and the fact they have only been with us two weeks. As they say though only time will tell! Guess we all have our fingers crossed.

Anyone know who the trialist playing in defence was? Number 5 I think?

Nice to be playing again! It's been too long. A good run out no doubt. Well done to the players and staff.

Given that we haven't played for over 5 months, lost so many players who we'd have wanted to keep, only recently been in a position to start replacing those players and only been able to have a few very limited, disjointed pre season training sessions I really don't think it'd be fair to pass judgment at all.

I do hope everyone is going to be patient and remain level headed this season because it is going to be very tough and for once it isn't the clubs fault. Conditions outside of anybody's control mean we'll probably be going into the season far more unprepared than we'd like and under more financial strain than we'd expect. The last thing anybody needs is people getting carried away and losing their heads after a rough patch of form or a slow start.

This. I suspect  we are really going to struggle early doors, simply because we are so far behind a number of other clubs in terms of recruitment  and fitness

Probably because we started pre season training later than a lot of other teams.

Most teams are starting with a few new players who like ours have been keeping fit on their own.

Our contract players are fit because they have been monitored by our fitness coach.

So most teams will be in the same boat as us imo.

I think it will take a few more games than usual to see who will be at either end of the table.

I trust Ollie to have us near the top by the end of the season not the begining.

When reading other forums, most teams (not all) had reported back for pre season before us and nearly all have been playing friendlies for over a week or more now.

Well on Aug 9th Trevor Green reported in the Gt that Town players were reaching new levels of fitness, having been back in training for a week. I don't think many clubs outside the PL have been training much longer than that.

The bigger issue is getting the squad to gel with the new players coming in and sorting out the system. I know we have not  had friendlies but have there been trial matches we don't know about?

Hewitt has come back ultra fit according to reports from Holloway . If the other squad members have used the lockdown in equally effective manner I’d guess that they are in good condition. It’s just match sharpness that will need to be worked on . Sure we’ll have enough games prior to league games starting to work on that .

Didnt see anyone capable of bossing/running the midfield on that show, very one dimensional, played it sideways and backwards comfortably but then went long diagonals from the back after being patient.
Some of the younger lads looked ok, Hope carried the ball ok from fullback.

Didnt create a great deal in open play, nice free kick for the first, defensive gift for the second and scrambled a corner in for the third outside of that didnt exactly carve them open.

Noticed the camera caught Ollie on a few occassions with his arms up and open in frustration.  Kick off now looks ominously close after that showing.

This seasons a write off before it even starts imo, it’s just about trying to make it through in one piece and seeing what happens next year

I don’t know. A lot of clubs are in the same state of flux, some much worse than us. To be fair our club has weathered the storm better than most. This season might open up as an unforeseen opportunity if the right players can be signed. I think it is very unpredictable at the minute and we need more evidence before we judge.
