Carlisle haven't hung around, they have become the first EFL club to issue their released and retained list ahead of the summer.

Now our season is effectively over Ollie has some big decisions to make !!!

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

Not sure that’s totally accurate. Pretty sure Sam Russell’s contract was extended. And I think we have the option on Vernam, which will be taken.

I really hope Wright gets an extension.

Cook will clearly be let go, which is a shame as I think he’s talented, but obviously injury prone.

I presume Rose will be a goner.

Yep, Vernam not updated by CA: https://www.grimsbytelegraph.c.....act-holloway-3845014

And Russell (I'd completely missed this one too): https://www.grimsbytelegraph.c.....own-contract-3947912

We have a few promising players, the problem is they stay promising, And that is not good enough because you end up with a promising but doing nothing team.  I fully expect that next season as sad as it is , a lot of these type of players will be doing other things next season .  That should up the standard of players plying there trade and we should see a better standard of player out on the pitch .. i hope

Late May is a tough time for many soon-to-be out of contract players, but this year must be absolutely brutal.

As of now, ability and form goes out of the window. Clubs have no certainty as to when income may return, and at the very least gate receipts seem a long way away right now.

Vernam being a case in point. On footballing merit in isolation it would be madness not to take up the option of another year. Financially however, doing so would be suicidal. How do you pay for that year if no one is allowed to walk through the BP gates for its entirety which is a possibility if not a probability.

If you find that concept frustrating, turn a thought to the player himself. His family, his mortgage. Footballers get a rough time, even at this level, for getting paid to do something most of us would do for free (if we weren’t so shíte), but with fixed contract terms and no long-term furlough possibilities they are amongst the most financially vulnerable in this crisis.

Completely agree- but sadly it’s the same for a lot of people. Tough times for people who felt very comfortable 6 months ago!

Suddenly, after years of hearing about bonuses and perks in the private sector, I’m grateful for being a teacher!
