I note that the ever reliable “Sun Newspaper” is reporting today that a number of clubs are interested in signing Joe Hope from town this summer with Middlesbrough and Everton leading the charge.

One of the most annoying aspects of modern football is that any reasonable prospect is gobbled up by these “big clubs” before the lads ever even appear in our first team. Turning the clock back the likes of Donovan, Drinkell, Ford, Moore, Lund and Wilkinson et al may never have played for town if this system had been in place back then.

We should do everything we can to keep hold of him. We'd be Hope-less if he left.
(Sorry, I'll get my coat).

They'll take him from us for a pittance but then he can sit on the bench when we play their B team which will apparently help us. Then they can send him on loan to Swansea, then Gillingham before finally releasing him at the age of 24 so he can play part time for Boston.

....and then go to prison.

Actually, hopefully he’s got more about him than that, but the pitfalls have been seen before. Fingers crossed for him, and his career at Town,

Surely one of the biggest contributing factors to this is the false promises given and the financial bargaining that goes on.

So many lads get 1/2 year pro contracts at bigger clubs in the championship and the top flight and earn enough money to set themselves up and even if released will may be trickle their way in to a league 2 side conference.

That financial allure is sadly part of the problem and whilst we all recognise it’s impossible to turn down, couples with amazing facilities and clubs like Town, scunny, Lincoln, Oldham et al don’t stand a chance of keeping these lads.

Hopefully Ollie can convince him that if he stays here and works hard enough he could have a good number of competitive games under his belt like Pollock.

A book that was written about the many youth team players that dont make it backs up your point.Over 95% will never have any success in football. As you say youngsters who chase a dream eg 14-15 year olds yet find themselves at 24 with nothing to fall back on and then have to start from scratch doing something else .

Maybe if they didn't hoover up all the remotely interesting talent there wouldn't be any need for all this talk about B teams and loan clubs

I thought this was going to be a thread on the chances of seeing football this side of Christmas.

Its too easy for the youngsters to go.

Better coaching set up, and they will probably pay him more than our first team pro's are on.

This needs to change for local clubs to get something out of our home grown talent, and actually get paid decent money for him!
