Have to laugh at that....
Jolley (with his previous experience and contacts at Burnley) leaves us and 5 minutes later we loan a player from Burnley.

Does that mean Gibson isn't coming back? But then we haven't got any left backs as it stands so maybe he'll still return.
Is the Clarke link based on anything other than the fact Holloway signed him over a decade ago (when he banged in 1 goal in 3 years for Blackpool)?

Left-sided defender Anthony Glennon signed for Burnley after a lengthy association with Liverpool.
The Bootle-born left-back had been in the Academy set up at Liverpool from U6 level and also played alongside current Liverpool and England right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold for local club side Croxteth Park.
In 2017/18 he played under Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard in the Reds’ U18 side before being released.
After impressing on trial with the Clarets he signed for Burnley in June, 2018.
An impressive first season at Turf Moor saw Glennon captain the U23 side and make it as far as the bench for the Clarets' Premier League game at home to Manchester City in April, 2019.
A contract extension in Glennon's contract was triggered to extend his stay in June, 2019.
And as captain, he led the U23s to an 18-game unbeaten run at the start of the 2019/20 season.

Like it, sounds like a good loan deal to me, let's hope he is given time to settle in and show what he has got!

Not necessarily, I believe that Gibson is the only left back we have, so if we can keep him, I would guess that the young lad from Burnley might be here as backup. However, I don't think SD would send him here to sit on the bench either!

Gibson's done well, I'd be sad to see him leave.
With Ring gone, I'd think we could justify having both Gibson and Glennon here.
I'm still disappointed that Robson is leaving, I thought he was getting some form going. I really hope he breaks into Sunderland's first team, if they're insisting he goes back.

It does beg the question, how many players did jolley try to get in that said no.
To have a manager with so much clout and the pr it has provided [so far], can only be a positive for the club and, the supporters.

Also handy for a more flexible formation and switching between 4 and 3 at the back

Well the rumours seemed to say quite a few of his first choice players knocked Jolley back. It's an advantage when you have a name with a lot of experience, knows a lot of players and is well known in football. Becomes a bit easier when you're talking to players to convince them it's a good idea because they want to play under a well known manager. If Ian Holloway calls then you listen to what he has to say, if some nobody calls then you can say "no" and put the phone down.

Although I didn't see the game, didn't Gibson play well at centre back once as well? I think he was also a very flexible defender in this respect. Little of chance of breaking through at Newcastle though; I wonder where he'll end up.

Not quite so keen on this Clarke rumour though - he looks like another of those non-striking strikers we keep finding.

The Telewag reports that Glennon spent 12/13 years at Anfield, having signed at age 6. I think that with our new momentum and enthusiasm, we should be looking at getting players who started their football careers at bigger and better clubs than Liverpool.

Yeah, but we do love and specialise in non scoring goalscorers. It's almost traditional! Even better if they're getting on and on the way down. Bet we could do a much longer list of those than an actual goal scoring goal scorer

I would go for one with happy feet right now. We need to be clever on this though especially considering that we know we only have room for a couple in this window.

In Holloway’s latest interview on iFollow he says he’s looking to have another deal done on Thursday, and that the player is “someone he knows well and has worked with before”. He had Clarke for three years at Blackpool, so given his name has already been mentioned by Tondeur and that there aren’t that many players who’d have played under Holloway who would be realistic targets (either because they’re too old or currently getting game time at a higher level) you’d have to say it looks likely.

Or a creative midfielder to compliment Hess and Clifton now Robson has returned to Sunderland. That's possibly even more important as we haven't had a creative central midfielder so far this season.

I think Clarke would be a great signing one of these players that always gives his all. Played 14 times this season for Bradford, 1 goal. But we all know what it's like, sometimes it just clicks with clubs. Gave Chelsea the run around the other year.

Perhaps my expectations could be to high? I look to much into track records etc.. So who do you think he will link well with in the current squad? Did he link up well with Hanson at Bradford? Could this be where IH is going with this as well?

Clarke is listed as a midfielder/striker, so could explain why he isn't prolific if he's more of a number 10 than an out and out striker. Perhaps he can make as well as score goals. Dunno to be honest but if its him then IH must think he's part of the solution to our lack of goals.

Ginnywings, this could be where reason is, If IH has spoken to Hanson, which I am sure he has. The connection between players which both IH and Hanson have worked with and getting the best out of what we already have would make sense.

Free interview with IH after the reserve game on iPlayer
Gibson out of contract this summer so he's gone back to Newcastle to give himself best chance of a new deal or being able to find something more full time.
Robson also gone back. IH told Sunderland's manager he thought he was a good player and could probably play in their first team so Parkinson wants to take a look at him before making a decision on him. .again he's out of contract in the summer
Had to bring the new lad in at left back because we don't feel there's anyone in the yoof at LB who's ready to step up. He wants to encourage the younger lads coming through though so he's not going to bring players in for the sake of it when the young lads could be given a shot
Confirmed he thinks well have a new player in by Thursday, it's someone he's worked with before.

Fact: the last time a player called Glennon played at BP, we won 7-0.
Incidentally, that was one of Matt Glennon's last games of his career. In fact, in his final 7 games he conceded 30 goals, including two 7's and one 6. Unsurprisingly, Halifax lost all of those games as well. Sometimes I guess you just know when your time's up...

Quote from a mate thats a life long Burnley fan "Quality player, we just have 2 left backs in front of him, so his chances of playing first team for us are limited. He will be one of the best left backs in league two by a country mile"

Free interview with IH after the reserve game on iPlayer
Had to bring the new lad in at left back because we don't feel there's anyone in the yoof at LB who's ready to step up. He wants to encourage the younger lads coming through though so he's not going to bring players in for the sake of it when the young lads could be given a shot
So unlike Jolly it looks like he is not going to move Hendrie to left back and play Hewitt at right back. No square pegs in round holes. Works for me.

Told by a Bratfud fan that Clarke is attacking mid that does indeed link up very well with Hanson.
