I think he could have played for another couple of seasons for his beloved Everton, but decided to take the American dollar instead.

Magical player when on form. The whole England not performing during his peak had so many variables. Mainly mismanagement. A depressing waste of talent (internationally) at our disposal then.

Rooney was a top player but could have been better if he was more disciplined.

I cant blame him though.Football clubs will do what best for them so players need to do vice versa.

Bit Like Joe Hart, was at his best as a teenager, probably put Owen and Fowler in that bracket as well.
Euro 2004 he was amazing just seemed to lose a bit of the tenacity in his play as he got older, to me while he was talented what got him to that level was his sheer bloody effort in those early years.
Like when we signed Martin Paterson on loan in 2006, still the hardest working player I have ever seen for Town (not got much competition from about 2000 on wards to be fair) he was just crackers, chasing down anything. The next time I saw him play was when we played Huddersfield in the FA Cup 2014(?) he was playing and barely moved for anything, hardly recognised him.

He was tremendous when he first hit the England team. Just like Owen with that goal against Argentina. But something goes wrong and I am not sure if it is mental or physical. I saw Jimmy Greaves score great goals as a Chelsea teenager and still score great goals when under under the affluence of incohol at West Ham ten years later, Likewise Geoff Hurst, Franny Lee etc. I do remember seeing both Rooney and Owen about 2010 and being gobsmacked by the size of their thighs! There was a lot of talk that Owen was overtrained at Liverpool and that caused injuries and loss of pace. Rooney also got injuries, lost his pace and that ability he had in 2004 to burst clear of defenders, that is why he is in America not the PL. Seems to me there was some poor management of these two over their early years.

Agree, Rooney was a joy to watch when he burst onto the scene. After he got stamped on by that Portugueser in 2004 he was never the same. Scored lots of goals for England but had a lot of time to do it in.

Disagree. He was incredibly exciting to watch in his early years, but I think that the metatarsal injuries took some of that explosive burst of pace out him and I think that around 2007/2008 he lost that edge. But generally as a footballer, he was at his peak from roughly 2009 - 2012. He was still quick and energetic, but was a far more rounded player as well as being a much better goal scorer. 2009/2010 was his last great season where he was consistent and looked one of the best players in the world. 2004-2010 were the years that Rooney was a genuinely brilliant footballer. 2010 onwards were the years where he stole a living. He was finished at Utd & at Everton soon found out.

excrement goalkeeping. All he did in reality was give it a big kick up the pitch...yes he meant to shoot...yes he had the power to reach but no goalkeeper should be beaten from that range.

He became more rounded as a player but I found him less exciting. He became much more utilitarian under Fergie. More predictable. Yes he was good but, dull in my opinion.

Really? Give him a bit of credit ffs !! If one of Towns players scored a goal as good as that you’d have a big stain in your Y fronts !!

It's a complete guess but I'd say he earned just as much or possibly more at Everton than over there. Edit: (The Washington post) " However, according to people with knowledge of the agreement, Rooney is making far more than the listed numbers ($2.7m). Those sources said he is collecting about $5.1 million, the balance coming largely from guarantees tied to his image rights and other unspecified compensation. Rooney, 32, earned about $10 million in salary for Everton in the Premier League last season."

It depends doesn’t it? Would you say that the Czech keeper who booted the ball over Malcolm White at BP had scored a goal as good as that? Certainly a lot further to kick it from his own area. I thought this was a fairly easy and straightforward goal for a player like Rooney. Nice bounce of the ball and the keeper nowhere, he only had to get it on target. He has scored better goals.

Regarding Owen, I'm sure I read somewhere that he 'bulked up' his legs to avoid the recurrent hamstring injuries which he was getting as a youngster. Meant that he lost his pace, but his movement and finishing still led to a great goalscoring record. Until he crocked his knees and got obsessed with the horses, of course! Scored a lot of headed goals for a little bloke which shows he was a good footballer.
Rooney was just physically worn out by his late 20s. Don't think he looked after himself outside of the season which probably cost him a year or two at the top. He should have played up front much longer than he did and needed a manager to tell him not to keep dropping back into midfield to pick up the ball. It's not easy to score goals when you're not in the box enough.

Really. If an opposition player scored a goal like that against McKeown we would all look at McKeown....if my keeper on a Sunday got beat like that i would look at the keeper....keeper error all day long wherever, whoever.

Course you would if its scored against your team. That's the fickle nature of football fans. If a town striker pops it in the from halfway line it'll be goal of season. Or would you call it lucky due to the opposition's keeper??
