Gordon Bennet, not another name thrown out there to add to all the rest who never materialised....best forget speculation and open up a thread on if, who and when we actually sign someone...

With Cardiff now being premier they are loaded so may agree to pay all his wages. Mr Fenty would be well chuffed.

You'd have to be a bit concerned if he was looking for his third club of this season regardless of the rules. Could be an interesting one.

If Slade was interested we don't want him. But seriously I can't see Torquay paying his full wages so I assume if we got him on loan we would only be paying a percentage,

Healey has not managed to get back to his best since his injury and I have a feeling he wont either. O'Keefe totally forgot about him.

We have had a habit of resurrecting strikers with poor records in previous seasons, so if he joined, then this management team could possibly get good results from him, as we hope they will from Vernam, Cook and Hooper.
Another player in may push Cardwell further out of the picture, as he is still recovering from injury.
Nothing wrong with healthy competition, and would also like to see if the young Burnley lad can be signed on loan for the season for left back, with fond memories of Townsend racing down the wing as well as defending.
Be interesting to see the line up tonight - to gauge the manager's rating of competition importance - a good run would help coffers and also player team bonding.
There will be a pre match dressing room showing of all striker video goals so that they will all shoot on sight...... well... it helped Cook !! If Carlsberg did videos ???

Seen a few negative comments about him on social media today, I really wish some would remember to take in to account two points when quoting a players scoring record at a SENIOR level;
1) Age 2) Amount of game time (consistency of it aswell).
This lads only 23. A player like this, at a premier league club currently, you’d do better to look at their U23 record.

Change of heart from Notts Forest on Lee Tomlin. Karanka on Lee Tomlin He’s been linked with a move back to Nottingham Forest having spent the latter half of the 2017/18 season on loan at the City Ground. But it seems Lee Tomlin is unlikely to re-join Forest this summer. Here’s what Forest manager Aitor Karanka told the Nottingham Post. “We have almost 30 players in the squad, so I prefer to focus on the players who I have in the squad,” said Karanka, when asked if there was any lingering interest in Tomlin. “We have two weeks of the window left, but the squad is complete now. “Today, after the last game, no, it is not something we are thinking about. “On August 31, five minutes before the deadline, if something surprising happens, who knows. But for today, no, I don’t think it is something we would look at.” Aitor Karanka

Don't think he was even that tall, myself. Knew how to use his body well (and, of course, we passed into feet quite well back then!). Not sure the modern day referee would be happy with him taking a firm two-handed grip on the opponents shorts to keep them behind him which was Rees' stock in trade!

I see your point but does a target man necessarily need to be over 6ft? For me Lenny is the best target man we've had in years and he was only 5'10 or 5'11. In terms of target men, I was very impressed with Macclesfield's young striker Harry Smith who they've just signed from Millwall. He was huge, easily 6'5/6'6, for a man of his size he was very mobile, held it up well, had a good touch and was technically very good. Someone like him would be perfect for us IMO! He's only 23 too so still has some growing and maturing to do.... Couod be one to keep an eye on.

The problem I have with a big 6ft5 target man is that it increases the likelyhood we will just hoof the ball up under the slightest bit of pressure.
For me, holding the ball up and bringing others into play are the most important attributes from a target man. Most headed goals are scored from set plays where you are likely to have your tallest up for anyway.
In recent years, LJL was excellent at this. He often fed the ball wide and played the ball that led to an assist. These passes are nowhere to be seen in statistics so although his assist/goal return may have been poor at times, his contribution was important.

All about movement - making space for others to run into is the key and losing the fear to attack the space - both of which have been lacking from our performances so far although Hess & Vernam tried their best last might. It needs to come from all areas though and one of our team last night didn't move at all.

LJL was a good target man but he was replaced by an even better one in Amond.
Amond wasn't big, strong or quick but he had great movement and knew how to hold the ball up. He made himself a target for the pass rather than the traditional idea of a 6'4 target man who the ball is just lumped up towards for a flick-on.

but in Rees's case defenders had the added difficulty of having to navigate around his tash to get the ball

A real fiery temper too, which sometimes got the better of him but added to the sheer unpredictability of his play.

The back-heel king. He must have spent hours in training practising his back-heels.

And the Thigh Slapping King. He learned that in the hope of a post-football career in panto. He had one season at Great Yarmouth in male private Widdrington.

And he bagged as many goals in one season as the Shop did in 2 1/2

Amond wasn't a target man. He just wasn't. Good movement and intelligent play but he covered half the ground off the shop. An entirely different type of player. They would probably complement each other.

LJL chased things down into corners, he was relentless and never stopped hassling during his whole time here, regardless of the type of form he was in.
Amond ran the line far more effectively than LJL ever did. He made himself available for the best pass, if that was short, long or in the corners, he made himself a target for the passing man. Shop didn't make himself a target, he reacted to where the ball went.
Once the ball reached Amond, we kept it. As hard as LJL tried, it often bounced off his head, knee, shin, whatever.

^ This. A "target man" doesn't have to be a 6ft brute to challenge for headers. Amond could use his core strength and his body to shield the ball and ensure it stuck. His movement was also different class to anything we've seen at Town from a centre-forward since we played in the Championship (and still is). I do wonder if the people going on about needing a big target man will be the same people complaining when we're slinging high balls up to this target man to challenge for in the air?

If Healey is an out n out striker, not a bleeding target man, that's the last thing we need let alone want, then get him, he's scored goals, still young and has a point to prove which should make hungry to score more....should he be in an LJL mould, forget it, it'll just be another..macca banging it out to the flank and hoping he can knock down or onto one of our players...

I doubt it very much. After following Town for over 63 years my experience tells me, We only sign a player before any news of him comes out, The more time goes on and we read that we are interested in x y or z, The less likely we are to sign them. We will sign somebody soon but it will not be a name we have been talking about for weeks.

I liked Amond as a player, I really did. Used movement and intelligence (not to mention clever nudges on defenders) to find space for his chances. I'd be happy enough if he was with us now as his record over the past couple of seasons shows he's likely get into the early teens goals-wise if played regularly in the League.
However, he wasn't a target man in any way, shape or form. Newport play him off a bigger striker, so did Hartlepool and so did we. The 'target man' I'm talking about is a physical presence who can shake up opposition defenders when the ball invariably breaks loose or loops up into the air, whose strength makes them the focal point of the attack and creates space for more clever players such as Amond. Not necessarily somebody to lump the ball to aerially because it is rare for big defenders to lose too many headers. It's just more difficult to tackle or manhandle somebody who isn't several inches shorter and a couple of stone lighter than yourself.
I don't think many teams at our level are skilful enough to play without a more 'physical' player or two in attack. If you're going to be short or slight, you've got to be quick and skilful, not to mention accurate with your passing. You only need to see how many counter-attacking chances we butcher through poor decision-making and passing to see we're unlikely to manage this with our current squad. Hence the need for a stronger player up front.

I`m thinking the same as Pete, if Healey was a serious option it seems dead in the water, we will have to settle with What, whoever he is

Update. On players leaving on loan
NEIL WARNOCK:
"That’ll be decided before the end of the month. I’ve let certain players speak to clubs. One of the clubs wanted a player on loan to be on the bench tomorrow. I don’t know if that will come off but nobody’s going for definite yet."

He can’t have scored 20 in one season. As far as I aware no one has ever run round BP with a sausage up their bottom 😉
