Obscene amounts of cash. Even more obscene that the bulk of that money will go out of the country to agents and foreign clubs and players.

Be good to see some of these modern players become football club owners when they finish, but it's very rare (I can only think of Salford)

Don't hold your breath many are now more concerned about taking more subscribers & broadcasters money as pundits. Feels bizarre that in the case of Sunderland, Boro and Hull you get "prize money" for being relegated.

I am personally developing a massive grudge against the premier league and all it stands for a well as the seismic negative impact it has on the league pyramid, FA Cup, England team etc...

TBF Football is not the safest way to invest your money, property is much safer read somewhere Steve (interesting) Davis has some of his fortune invested in forestry in Scotland. Most prem players are millionaires come a long way from the old days.

One thing that did strike a chord though I heard Bournemouth had signed ex Chelski keeper Asmir Begovic for a staggering ten million notes. Does not seem that long ago they were penny less on the brink of extinction just before we beat them in 98. Eddie Howe had the biggest ever last laugh against us.

Wonder how Huddersfield will cope in the big time?

Whatever we may say about the premier league that is the place every club wants to be, it's alright saying you like the friendliness of division 2, so suppose we won our first 20 league games and were running away with the league, would we be happy if the team then lost every other game just to stay in league 2. The premier league is a different animal but it's where everyone wishes to be.

Bottom club Sunderland received more money this season than Champions Leicester did last season. That is one hell of a pay rise and comes weeks after the Accrington Chairman was all but threatened to be cut off by the powers that be for daring to question the 1/2 million pounds League 2 clubs get. We live in some strange lopsided world where the more you have, the more you get given.

Most "small" clubs always have wanted to be up there to be among the elite, to see the really big teams performing on their park. I think promotion to the top league has always frightened some owners though. There was even talk like that when Town were in the running to go up into the old Div One in the 80s. It is possible to still be a community club in the PL but it's getting harder and harder because the smaller clubs are not run in the same way as the big ones where money is immaterial. The small club can compete for a while but in the long run it's like poker, the biggest bankrolls eventually win. So it's forcing those small clubs to become mini versions of the big ones by means of prize money, parachute payments and so on.

It's no coincidence that 5 out of the top 6 Championship clubs had foreign managers this year. The top half of the Championship and the bottom half of the PL are almost interchangeable. Huddersfield appear different. They have a richer Fenty in David Hoyle but even he can't bankroll a PL club so they will have to operate differently to survive. They won't be the same local community team by the end of this season, they will have at least 50% foreign players for starters.

I'm convinced the top 6 PL clubs plus  a few others would jump ship into a Euro league in a heartbeat if the chance came along. Some of them already have franchise clubs in America, Australia and Asia. They have no loyalty to English football or even to England for that matter.

Absolutely not. I would love to see Town in the Championship, but I can genuinely say that given the choice, I wouldn't have us in the Prem.  Maybe in 5 years time with a new Stadium etc I might think differently, but I would be surprised if I did.

The wife was going away for a girly weekend.
I jokingly remarked  'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football'
'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

She said 'Well you already know how to play football'

The soul of football is being destroyed season over season. Foreign investment in every single premier league club, and taken away, match by match, from the working class that grew up watching it.

Atmospheres are being destroyed by 'football tourists' and the cost nowadays fits in nowhere near to what the average wage is. A mate of mine went to watch Chelsea v Sunderland (he's from there originally!) and the 'day out' cost him well over £200!

The Championship is the holy grail for clubs like ours IMO. There are some huge clubs in there but it's still possible to operate and compete in that league without having to change the whole identity of the club. I did read somewhere though that to sign a top championship goal scorer nowadays it will cost a club £15million+, eyewatering money for clubs like Brentford that maybe want to take that extra step to compete for promotion

Why not think in terms of 1 season in premiership = £100m min even if you stick with your Champ winning squad then anothe £40m min after relegation back to Championship would love one season up there could set us up for another 5 yrs of being competitive in the championship.

And the fix truly is in once you add in the 'Champions' League to the equation as well.

Here's a breakdown of what the teams would receive this year:

http://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/news/newsid=2398575.html

So, we've got a plan where the wealthiest clubs play in a competition to make even more money which takes them even further away from the chasing pack in their own leagues. That Leicester win the other year is even more remarkable when you consider what they were up against back then and the imbalance has got worse since then. With the bigger Premier pot and the continued funnelling of CL money into the pockets of the biggest handful of clubs, I doubt we'll ever have a situation where a 'minnow' has even half a chance of winning the PL, though I suppose you might potentially get another Porto winning the CL due to the knock-out nature of the competition.

As for Huddersfield, I hope they generally stick with the squad that won them promotion, with just a few additions to improve them here and there. Even if they subsequently get relegated, they'll be well set to win promotion again the following season due to the bags of cash coming their way.

Incidentally, I reckon it will be just a matter of time before we're down to 2 promotion/relegation places between the PL and Championship.

That'd be terrible as the bottom 13 in the Prem this season were all shite!

Agreed. The only reason they are tolerated is because the big selling point of the PL to overseas viewers is the possibility that number 20 can beat number 1 on their day. That makes for better TV than week in, week out MU v MC etc. and it also opens up the betting market.

But yes, Abdul, the bottom 13 are rubbish, just the same as the wannabes at the top of the Championship. What the PL top half would love to do is leave altogether for a Euro or a global super league by invitation with no promotion/relegation, just huge cash prizes.

Something they would quickly regret as they were stuffed week-in, week-out by the big clubs from the continent.

The money floating around the PL this transfer window is crazy. Liverpool about to pay £35m for some nobody striker from Roma who couldn't get in the Chelsea side two years back. MU about to pay a fortune for Keane, a player they sold a few years ago to Burnley for peanuts, just like they sold and bought back Pogba...... and nobody bats an eyelid anymore. That's normal money these days.

And here are we, like all the proper clubs, hunting around the nether regions for cast offs and wannabes.

I think about £3billion of the £8billion is from overseas TV rights so it's not all OUR money.

The Prem and Championship is now dominated by money clubs.  The rewards for promotion to the Prem encourage some clubs to take the risk of over-spending. It is a fine line between success and a club collapsing. Some Championship clubs have crossed the line.

Well, I was reading the sport pages this morning and these names came up -

Lindelof -£35m
Lukaku - £100m
Bakayoko - £35m
Beloti -£70m
Morata -£60m

In spite of following football for 60 years I am afraid I have absolutely no idea who 4 of these 5 are or why they are likely to come into the PL and make so much money for agents. I have seen Lukaku on the box but although he got 20+ goals for Everton they were nearly all at home and he didn't cut it with Chelsea so ... £100m??

The more I see of this, the less likely I am to watch the PL especially with Lineker on MOTD.

As some others on here have said, PL football is already part of the global stage (not dissimilar to the globalisation of other international business and capital) with a worldwide audience of subscribers. In that sense it is not out of kilter with UEFA club competitions and World Cups for international teams. International talent in any sphere is mobile throughout the globe (apart from North Korea) and this is unlikely to change any time soon. Despite living close to north London, I wouldn't even consider watching Arsenal or Tottenham unless televised. I have been a Town supporter all my life, even though I had a 'dalliance' with both Manchester clubs in the late 60's when I was at University there. Thus, I've just sent off my cheque to renew my season ticket at BP and will be making the daunting 310 mile round trip to Cleethorpes a few times next season, though certainly not for every match.
