End of thread.
Never say never How many away fans will they take for their top of the table clash considering the amount we're taking to games at the moment?
|
| Are we any closer to getting promoted since Hurst has been here? No
Has he been given time to achieve promotion by the chairman and fans? Yes

Why are we showing any interest in Scunny??
If you opened the thread then ask yourself that question. It's an interesting comparison between crowd numbers of two local teams in different divisions. I'm personally interested in what's going on/going wrong at Scunny, top of the table, money to burn, finally above Town after all this time yet apathy reigns.

Like it or not they are doing well on the pitch ,seem very pro active off the pitch with regards to their new stadium and have a chairman with lots of money .... but after all that they will always be our little neighbours down the road and I genuinely believe the natural positioning of the clubs isn't that far away

Fact is they have out performed us for more than a decade.
We may have a grander history than them and often played at a higher level than them but its just that...history!
Lets make a new history and re-establish ourselves as the top club in the area. In recent times we were 3 levels below Scunny at one stage.(that in itself is a disgrace) . Now only 1 division seperates us.
I may live in Scunthorpe but I have no love for their team but I also dont hate them. They are a traditional local rival to the Mariners but for most of my life they have been insignificant to me. Wednesday, Hull, Barnsley etc are as much rivals in my eyes.
If anything I have respect for what they have achieved. It's a bit of a shame for them that they simply dont have the fanbase to go along with their chairman's ambitions.

They have the biggest growth of populations in the past decade too that now stands with their being 6000 more within the Scunthorpe surrounding area (North Lincs) compared to us (North East Lincs) so the old arguments of us having a bigger town no longer stands . They just aren't a football town. Always in our shadow .

North Lincs covers a far bigger area than N.E. Lincs so doesn't show a true reflection. Wiki Population Scunthorpe 65,163 Grimsby 88,243 Cleethorpes 39,505 God forbid the steel works shut in the future.

It puzzles me why Scunthorpe dont get bigger crowds especially when theyre doing well (like now). Like Grimsby its not the most affluent of areas but it simply doesnt seem to have the fans.
I know a few 'casual' fans who rarely go and can count on 1 hand regulars at Glanford Park who i know. Like Grimsby there are plenty of United, Liverpool fans (and Leeds) around and they all manage to fill a bus every other week. And with the steel works there is a sizeable 1st and 2nd generation Scots population and a large Celtic support as well. (far more than Rangers curiously)
I suppose they hadnt achieved a whole lot before and this last 10 years or so has been by far the most successful period in their history. Takes time to build that fanbase up. I just get the impression that the club isnt really in the heart and soul of the people here. Certainly not to the same degree as in the Grimsby area..
And if the Steel works ever was to go this town would be f****d.
There has been several housing developments in recent years around the town and the latest is the Lincolnshire Lakes development to the west of Scunthorpe up to the River Trent near to where the new ground will be built. 6 new villages and up to 8000 new homes.....god knows who they think will actually live there. Theres plenty of unsold houses elsewhere already.

[quote=22. Both areas are similar ,google it and have a look , similar sizes with similar catchments just one of us is a football town and the other is always in our shadow.

Next you'll be at one of their games singing Scunny songs, turncoat.

We voted them into the league, they haven't earned the right to play in the league, we have, twice. They owe their existence as a league team to the Mariners, they are forever in our debt. Scunny is the bottom end of Mordor, so of course they don't have any fans, they are too busy chasing Hobbits.
