Don't forget you can listen to Saturday's game live on Mariners Player

So we're getting commentary! Nice one, well pleased.
There'd better be now anyway or I'll be really pssed off at the club for saying that.

Come on Town.
All I ask of the players is a little bit of commitment and another 6-1 win.

Interesting to hear the Barnsley commentators saying they think Coulson would be more suited to playing up front rather than on the wing.

Connell was played on the wing at Bournemouth so maybe Coulson could have a similar impact this season if S&H decide to play him more centrally.

Sounds like it was 4-4-2 then with Eagle left, Coulson right.

Personally I'm well pleased with that performance - sounds like we're a shade unlucky to be 2 down and we could have had 1 for sure.

It was almost nailed on we'd lose really playing a team 3 levels above us.

Hard to believe that the last time the 2 teams played we stuffed them 6-1 at BP.

What I like is that

- we're counterattacking not just sitting back.
- causing them problems from set pieces
- "Organisation and fitness lot better."
- "when we've got the ball down we've played some nice stuff"
- commentary said we were trying to use our pace up front too.

What I like is that

- we're counterattacking not just sitting back.
- causing them problems from set pieces
- "Organisation and fitness lot better."
- "when we've got the ball down we've played some nice stuff"
- commentary said we were trying to use our pace up front too.

Thats great 80s, when was the last time we played like that ay ?

Exactly but some people will only see the score(even though we've scored and are defensively stretched) and use it as an excuse to slag us off.

People need to realise that Barnsley are still playing at Championship level and have put out a strong team today including a forward (Vaz Te) who played Premiership football for Bolton last season. Having listened to the commentary it sounds like we have done quite well considering and even their commentators have been quite complimentary at times. We won't be playing teams of Barnsley's quality each week.

We were playing nice stuff at Sheffield as well, espicially in the final 3rd of the pitch. Barnsley are 3 leagues above us and should be beating us comfortably, espicially at home. IMO we should be judging our performances against teams such as Gainsborough then today as a measuring stick to the upcoming season.

I'm dissapointed that the Doncaster game is the day before Gainsborough as I have a feeling we will play a stronger team against Donny (with it being a home game). Personally I think the team would benefit with an extended run out aganst a team only 1 league below us rather then against a team 3 league above us and who are going to be much better then teams we will face just weeks later

This game was only arranged at the last minute though. Most teams would already have a pre-season schedule already organised but with both us and Barnsley losing the opposition we were due to play we were probably the only 2 teams in England who didn't have a game already organised.

Very true Les.
Plus two of their goals were long range where the keeper had no chance.
In any case I'd much rather take 5-1 + a good performance with promising signs than 2-0 and nothing to feel good about.

Disagree - think you've a much better idea of your weaknesses when they're exposed (by teams at a higher level).

total and utter rubbish to say you would much rather take a 5-1 defeat! what a bunch of gormless fools you lot are. blind faith as usual and complete ignorance to the fact that gtfc,s squad is poor. wake up before it,s too late yet again. i would not be wanting to lose 5-1 to anyone. you have to have more ambition than you lot and stop being satisfied with this dross. the defence is dreadful. two crocks, one kid, and an untried conference north player plus garner who was sent out on lone last year does not and i repeat not make for a good defence.

To say we lost 5-1 it was a very good game, the Peno was never actually a peno from Wer I was sitting.
We made some very good chances but failed to take them all. On the drive back now

It's never a good feeling to lose 5-1 to any team but we've got to remember the standard of team we were playing and the fact that the result really isn't important.

It seems like there were some positive signs and that is the main thing. Hopefully the players aren't too disheartened by this as it doesn't sound like we deserved to lose by such a high margin.

agree 80s  still surprised that we lost 5-1 didn't expect that

Well I'm not suprised given the gulf but still think it doesn't reflect the scoreline - 2 long range goals, a dodgy penalty and some missed chances from us.
And tbh I didn't expect us to score at all.

They are 3 divisions above us, the gap of quality is very big, anyone expecting a win or close result is just being daft.

A cup game is different as there is plenty to gain/lose.

If they have gained half a yard of fitness then it will have been worth while. Also I am sure the gaffers will have been looking at how we coped /didn't cope with various situations.

Pearson is ok just not being risked.
Church only came on in the last 10/15 mins so didnt' really have a chance to do much.

Congrats on your win - any win is good for the confidence!

total and utter rubbish to say you would much rather take a 5-1 defeat! what a bunch of gormless fools you lot are. blind faith as usual and complete ignorance to the fact that gtfc,s squad is poor. wake up before it,s too late yet again. i would not be wanting to lose 5-1 to anyone. you have to have more ambition than you lot and stop being satisfied with this dross. the defence is dreadful. two crocks, one kid, and an untried conference north player plus garner who was sent out on lone last year does not and i repeat not make for a good defence.

your acceptence of such dreadful results is your weakness and the weakness of all at grimsby. you just accept failure so easily!

You talk such b0llocks.
I was the actually the one who took the abuse by expressing doubt over Woods last season after 4 points from 6 !!!
The difference between you and me is, I'm objective and look at performances, not results.
Whilst you're just a sad case who looks for any excuse to moan and put the club down.

A good and sensible post you have got to look at todays opposition Barnsley who are a proven established team, with loads of settled players and if I was
the two Managers I would say to my players that is the standard you have to achieve.
I also will admiit that I do think that the end result today is not very good for us there will be a lot of discussion I feel 5-1 defeat is not very good at any level

I didn't go today so will refrain from making any comment about the abilities of our players. I would just say though that a 5-1 defeat at any level could affect some of our younger players and won't do a great deal to build squad confidence. I fully understand why we took the opportunity to play the game with a gap appearing at an important stage of pre-season but....
Furthermore, we have players for whom BSP is a step up. I hoped that we might be playing more teams nearer to that level i.e. League two teams. Anyway far too late to be moaning about it now. We'll have to hope Lincoln beat Scunny in the Lincs Cup!

The aim of argument or discussion should not be victory but progress.

why don't you move and play with your self as it proves by your post you know chuff all about football this team when they start the season will be ok I trust in S&H to get the best out of them Liza  went to the game and she said  it was far better than other seasons in  the last 5  years.
And  the telegraph reporter said they moved the ball well between them selves and just need a bit of luck. my liza also said IHHO the ref wass all their side and seemed to close his eyes when we won a free kick just goes to show.

Well said ian

The Sheffield FC result is more important than today. If we think back to last summer and the tour of Scotland we were being chased off the park by inferior teams and that was never fixed - it went on all season.

Today we were playing a better side and we had probably the weakest of our centre back pairings out there. To expect them to cope with championship level pace and skill would be foolish. The managers will have learned a lot from this game though and from what we can gather so have we. The side didn't fold, they didn't stop playing and working. At this stage of the pre-season we cannot ask for more. The aim is to be ready for August 13th not July 23rd.

A fair point IMO. Not sure if it will prove true or not, I'd like to think Scott and Hurst will show focus on the positives and won't let such a game affect them.
Someone mentioned they were "despondent" - don't know if that's true but if so, it may just be they were "disappointed" to lose so heavily after a decent performance.

Quoted from barralad
and won't do a great deal to build squad confidence.

Perhaps not but I'm of the view that's it better to identify any weaknesses before the season starts rather than during it.
I'm all for bringing younger players through but can we afford to carry any weaks links ? (not that I'm saying they necessarily are)
I'm not sure - in terms of "mistakes" defenders seem more important than strikers missing the target but then again, maybe that's complete rubbish...

You learn more by losing to a team 3 leagues above you, than winning against a team 3 league below you,

Whats important is , how we play against Fleetwood not what the score is in friendlies.

interesting to see that the gaffers had Disley and Thanoj in the middle.Wonder whether this will be the first choice pairing come the start of the season?

realityman has to be a Lincoln fan, never really saw the bitter ones coming on the board until now.  The Scunts have gone all quite since they have become a lower league team again.

This wasn't our full strength side and with players rested it gave the managers a chance not only to see how our players faired against a better team but to see how they coped mentally.  They would have been watching to see if players heads went down, to see who buckles when there is pressure on them from an opposing player knowing they are from either a better team or higher league.

Sometimes we put more pressure on ourselves than others do and hopefully if people were affected this way then hopefully HandS will have identified them and highlighted this to any player concerned.

This is the 2nd game but the first week of any ball work.

Went today, its never nice to see your team let in 5 goals. but i was still very happy coming back from Barnsley tonight, Duffy was decent, trimmed down and i think he will do well this season he certainly made me put the y back on to his last name over the past few games, his goal didn't look offside from were i was but I didn't really see it, I think hearn knocked it down for him, Charlie had his first poor game but i have got big hopes for him this season and next.

Vaz Te and Davis were pretty good, certainly the best we will come up against this season obliviously, maybe Kyle Perry and Taylor might come close this season though

thought Serge M could of done more when he came on but he has played well the previous games only had 20 odd mins though.

i agree. Barnsley are a Championship side so while no-one likes to get beat 5-1 it will have no real bearing when the action starts in 3 weeks.

I accept wins breed confidence and hopefully Town will get a couple under their belts this coming week but you can look fantastic in friendlies and be crap when points are at stake. Bumped into Lee Ridley at Scunny Morrisons after the game today and he said just that- he's been at clubs who have had woeful pre-seasons and they'e started the season great and been top of the league and other times it has worked the other way. He said he played 70 mins or so today and felt ok- nice to see him back playing.

H & S wanted a tough run out in a game that they knew the opposition can pass the ball well and would have the majority of the play. By all accounts we had our moments today ( i didn't go)  No doubt Donny will provide a similar test. Hopefully we can knock some goals in and develop our attacking play more against the likes of Winterton Gainsborough and Brigg. I plan to be at the rest of the pre-season games.

Vaz Te and Davis were pretty good, certainly the best we will come up against this season obliviously, maybe Kyle Perry and Taylor might come close this season though

thought Serge M could of done more when he came on but he has played well the previous games only had 20 odd mins though.

who did you think was Towns best player

it was league 1, but yeah still hard for a Lincoln fan to imagine.

Oh yeah, so it was! Ok then, 6-2 in a Championship game! (wimbledon)
Nearly as good!

What do you think of our new players then clive ? i have yet to see them due to work,do you think we will be up there this season mate ?

I think we will do better than last season, I can't see why the top 5 wouldn't be a realistic Finish with a bit  of momentum, Although I would settle for a top 7 finish and think it would be a good improvement.

Damian Spencer - Looks like a Decent target man, more mobile than i thought he would be of what i have seen.

Gary Silk - I think he is a ridley type player, you know what you get from him, haven't seen him down the line much yet though, but I'm sure he will.

Shaun Pearson - Boston fan was right, he is an incredible threat from set pieces, already got on the score sheet and hit the bar a few times, looks alright defensively.

Liam Hearn - Very good IMO can only improve, I get the feeling I will get frustrated watching him this season, but reckon he will get a decent amount of goals.

James McKeown - Decent young Keeper think he will push Arther this year if not start the season off as N.1.

Craig Disley - Think he will be Captain and one of our Main threats, Looks good with Church as well.

Anthony Church - The engine of the team I hope, the signs are looking good.

Frankie Artus - Decent Set pieces, quite silky player, decent skill, and passing, get the feeling i will become a fan.

Although i did think the new signings last season looked decent in Pre season but more importantly I feel more confident with S&H at the helm can see us being a major threat next season if we don't go up this year.

Quietly confident

I don't often post, so hope I'm putting this in the right place!

Went today. Agree with Super Clive - Duffy looks fitter than last season. Thought he was towns best player over the 90mins. Was a good target, won headers, held the ball up well and brought others into play. Also scored a goal.

Artus too caught the eye. Looked quite classy but also worked hard when he came on in the second half.

I'anson had a bit of a mare today. Was I think involved / responsible for 4 of the 5 conceeded.

Yes it was 5-1, but town actually played quite well. Not all long ball either, some quite nice passing play in spells which was a bit of suprise to be honest. Midfield looked ok, likewise upfront, but my concern is central defence. I'm not sure who the 1st choice pairing will be, but at the moment it still looks the problem area.

Cheers for that - should take them with the pinch of salt they deserve but you just can't help it somehow.
Burnsy will be pleased as punch but why the hell did Kenny sign Downing for £20million ?
Good win for Darlo against a full strength Boro side - shiiiittt where does that leave us ?
Massive difference between playing at home and playing away though.

Before their win I thought Newport would do well because there new signing Doherty(?) is very confident, think they'll win it myself, not Fleetwood or Luton.

intercourse it, we know pre-season results aren't worth the paper they're wirtten on !

Even so, thought that was a stand-out result.

But the more people thinking the new Grimsby side isn't very good the better
...unless we turn out to be not very good lol

interesting to see that the gaffers had Disley and Thanoj in the middle.Wonder whether this will be the first choice pairing come the start of the season?

You are kidding?
probably will be a bit soon to pitch the promising youngster into the starting 11 but I have high hopes for the lad. From what I saw of last season showed glimpses of potential of a good technical player. The other midfielders we have eg Wood (and by the sounds of it Church as well) are industrious yet maybe lack a bit of quality on the ball.If Thanoj has a decent pre season and shows the gaffers he is up to the job I dont see any reason why come later in the season when there are injury's to the other midfielders why he cant stake a claim for starting and retaining  his position if he is up to the job.

Pre-season means nothing, how many club do really well in prseason and then have a mare of a season?

Pre-season sees clubs work on different aspects in each game, also Barnsley have some decent strikers, last season they had Argentinians ffs....anyway lets see how we are doing after 10 games maybe we can judge then.

Hull beat a strong Liverpool side today . And i am happy we are doing this cause it is showing what formations are working and partnerships look strong , i would rather be making these mistakes now than on August the 13th .And look at the last 3 seasons we have had really good pre seasons and awful normal seasons . Maybe it will be we have a not so good pre season and a decent Season . This is what Pre season is about experimeanting and changeing things around which is why pre season is put in place .Also if i am correct i cant remember Woods or Newell having the balls to put in youngsters against the better sides . Which is good to see that every player is getting there chance to show what they can do . Also Keith Hill is a very good manager with a decent squad and i reckon if he gets the right players in they will definatly be up there ( last time we played him we lost 4-1 away ).There 3 divisions higher and this may sound stupid but therefore i expect there to be a 3 goal gap due to the quality getting better each division you go up . We could of easily scored 2 more yesterday and with our best squad out i reckon the score line would of been very different . UTM WITH H&S !

Depends on who you play really doesn't it? I doubt you'll get a nap hand if you play your ressies, like in last seasons 2-1 win against The Cods at this stage?

MUHAHAHA, you were lucky to even get us to penalties.  Dont give up your day job as a football pundit mate, you will go far (unlike the Scunts on that terrible showing!!!)

£5 penalty for the side which finishes the lowest out of Lincoln or Grimsby in the BSP this season
£5 penalty paid by the other for the side that has the highest league scorer out of Lincoln and Grimsby
£5 penalty for which side gets the most points over the other covering both league games.

Bet between Impish and Mariner91, loser has to pay cheque to kids wards at Diana POW or Lincoln County Hospital.

Simple.  The numbers on the program were our squad numbers, which we will wear when the proper seson strts, but yesterday we were wearing "old fashioned" 1-11 for the strting 11 plus 12-18 for subs.
