Another very good interview IMO, got it spot on.
Good to see him giving credit to certain members of the squad too.

A bit concerned he said Marshall can play left back.
Of course like Wood he did, but does he think he can do it effectively ?

I was impressed with Marshall too but do we really need him and wouldn't we be better off getting a left footed left back ?
Or is it too early to say ?
I fear it could another Dwayne Samuels type signing waiting to happen.

Never seen Marshall before but he caufght my eye in the first 45 minutes. He got stuck in although left himself a bit exposed at times. Then if we never give these sort of players a chance we will never know what they can achieve. Look at Scott Garner now. What a revelation

Give him a full pre-season and a contract for 6 months. If we dont try out our youngsters then why have a youth team? He has a bit of potential or he wouldnt have been invited back this year for pre-season. Wages are going to be small, its not a situation where we are going to loose anything.

Think he could end going the way of Samuals, being a right back cover if desperate. In no way was he a left back based on yesterdays second half. Would prefer we got a half decent left back for cover

I totally agree with your sentiment - I'm all for bringing in youth team players on lower wages.
It slightly baffles me why we asked him to come down but I guess Bradley at right back was by no means a given when we signed Silk.
Whatever happens I hope he gets a pro deal because he looks like he fully deserves one.

We have a youth team for those who make it, not to put in the first team to try them out. Nothing wrong with Thanoj and I'Anson which is why they have both got one year contracts. Not every youth player is going to make it.

Marshall was invited back because he was injured towards the end of last season and so H&S never saw him, he has come back for pre-season so H&S can see him.

I don't get this youth player sentimentally thing, either they are good enough or they ain't. We are a non league team we don't have the luxery of keeping players in the hope that one day they become good enough.

Im well aware of why Marshall was invited back thanks.

My point, which you seem to have missed is a player that is good enough for the youth team, that shows well in the reserves needs a chance to show if they can step up to the first team by being given the chance to play and train with the first team. How else can you judge players, bar the exceptional few that are obvious (Oster, Handyside, Croft, Croudson etc)? Nothing to do with sentimentality.

If your well aware of why he was invited back then why did you say he must have some potential otherwise he wouldn't have been invited back?

Because if he had no potential they wouldnt have bothered inviting him back, injury or no injury at the back end of the season.

See what you mean but then isn't the entire youth team also "the luxery of keeping players in the hope that one day they become good enough" ?

At what age should players be judged in terms of being good enough for the 1st team cos they can improve with age, coaching and 1st team experience. Some may even get overlooked in training or show their best on matchdays.

It's all well and good talking about bringing youth through but if you're realistically chasing promotion every year, they're unlikely to get the chance or the experience they need to improve and develop into better players (sadly we don't have a top drawer coaching setup).

It's not just youth either, just look at Scott Garner !!!
There were many who were crying out for Woodsy to give him 1st team experience but he just wouldn't !
Yes he got loan experience but what would have happened if we hadn't have needed to recall him ?
Like a lot of players loaned out then shown the door before him, he could have easily have been on his bike and written off as "not up to it".

Even Fenty himself talked about managers only considering their own position when choosing not to play youth at last years fans forum.
What he didn't mention is it's the clubs own target of "promotion" that drives managers(including Woods ironically) to do exactly the same thing.
He trusted Woods with a huge budget too and look what happened - almost all the so called "journeymen" have now gone.
With hindsight, wouldn't it have been better to stick a lot more younger players in ?

The club should always consider being honest with the fans about having a "rebuilding year" - if we do get promoted I'm certain we need to embark on a strategy of (cheaper) younger players who can gel with each other for the future.
Though I wouldn't be suprised if the new managers are already doing it to some extent...

No more aging players unless it's specifically for promotion please.
