I think so. It's sizeable town and there's nowhere of comparable size nearby south of the Humber.

St David's in Pembrokeshire is a city that has a population of only 2000. Wells and Ely also have city status and they are smaller than Louth.

On the other hand, Milton Keynes, Northampton and Luton are all twice the size of Grimsby, and they are not cities.

The original cities of the UK were deemed thus as they contained a diocesan cathedral. Subsequently, the monarch of the day has granted city status to other towns in the UK. A recent example was Sunderland, that was granted city status in 1992.

I think Doncaster were granted city status in 2000 as part of a competition Milton Keynes entered can't remember the others.

Would we have to be called Grimsby City then?  GCFC sounds like an exam.

Grimsby City does not sound right,

BUT

Swansea Town changed their name when awarded City status,

Swansea City sounds OK now,

So who knows, we might get used to it,

IF it happens.

But According to Macca we will have to merge Grimsby and Cleethorpes,

Cleesby City I could live with

But Grimthorpe does not bear thinking about

The town of Doncaster has less than 70,000 people living there.

The wider conurbation has more people, but not the town itself.

No, that's Reading.

Huddersfield is well down the list; several bigger towns, such as Dudley, Southend, Swindon, Bournemouth.

The last five cities are: Brighton, Wolverhampton, Sunderland, Somewhere in Scotland (Inverness and I think Derby....None of them have cathedra. Someone mentioned the Royal Decree. This is almost certainly true as all dates were to do with Royal Events or the Millenium i.e. Derby (1977) Silver Jubilee. Incidentally Swansea was made a city to celebrate the Investiture of the Prince of Wales..

Macca I think you are several years too early for Sunderland...
