I have had an e-mail from Cleethorpes MP Shona McIsaac. She has been doing some research into GTFC players who fought and died in the first world war.

Here's an excerpt from here article

Quoted Text

In all players from around 80 or so modern clubs enlisted to fight in the First World War, including Grimsby Town Football Club.

In an effort to stimulate recruitment in Grimsby, Second Lieutenant Arthur Ticker – the son of the Grimsby MP – was given the task of persuading the players and supporters to enlist. With two club officials, Tickler went to Blundell Park on 24 February 1915 to interview the players.

Sid Wheelhouse, Frank Martin, Alf Gregson, David Kenny and David Chalmers expressed their willingness to join at once and left to attest and have their medicals. Soon after, Percy Summer and Thomas McKenna signed up.

Tickler then went on to make an appeal for recruits at the Prince of Wales Theatre and another 25 joined up for the battalion.

Others, too, joined up. Grimsby-born winger, Ralph Thompson, joined the Grimsby Chums (10th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment) rather than the Middlesex Regiment.

Former players, Harry Springthorpe and Tom Lonsdale also enlisted.

The following Town players were killed in the war.

SIDNEY ‘SID’ WHEELHOUSE (Town's captain)
RALPH MOTSON THOMPSON (Chairman' son)
HAROLD ‘HARRY’ THOMAS SPRINGTHORPE

The followng players survived

DAVID ‘DAVE’ CHALMERS
ALFRED ‘ALF’ GREGSON
DAVID BROWN KENNY
THOMAS ‘TOM’ STEWART LONSDALE
FRANCIS 'FRANKIE' MARTIN
THOMAS PATRICK McKENNA
PERCY SUMMERS

She is looking for more information on these players, especially from any of their descendants.

You can e-mail here at McIsaacS@parliament.uk, or post here.

The full article is here.

Here's my contribution to Shona.

Have you read this book by the way? It may cover some of the players mentioned, it finishes just before WWI.

It's a fantastic book and of interest to football fans as well as historians I think.

An erection popping up on a Shona McIsaac thread, who'd have thought it.

Perhaps she should read "Grimsby's Own" "The Story of The Chums" by Peter Chapman. Pretty well details the chums from start to finish. Damn fine book.

The link below is a great read and very humbling to know how Grimsby contributed to the Great War.

The part about Grimsby fisherman should be taught in schools, this Town has something to be proud of and we should embrace that. During times of conflict, the people of Grimsby always stand up to be counted.

"The fishing craft were the advanced guard and without these sturdy, fearless dogs of the sea the Navy could not have achieved the work it did."

My dad was a fisherman during the war and despite it being a reserved occupation,he joined the Navy and served on minesweepers. My Grandad came out of retirement to help take up the slack and keep the fishing boats working.Unfortunately, his ship was sunk by a mine towards the end of the war.My mother actually received the news of his demise on V.E day.

Must have been awful for her, knowing the end of the war was so close.

Let's not forget that Grimsby Trawlers also shot down Bombers and fighers saving many British cities and a large amount of lives saved.

When you go to a match, did you know that across the road in St Aidan's church is a memorial to all those who lived in the areea who lost their lives in WW1?
GTFC captain Sid Wheelhouse is on that memorial. He was one of England's top players in his day and we do nothing here  to commemorate Sid and the other players and supporters who signed up in WW1 along side him, who lost their lives. I have been to Sid's grave in France to place a cross of remembrance. I felt sad that the only other memorial that had been placed was from Clapton (now Leyton) Orient fans.

As far as I am concerned, this s*d all to do with elections, but all to do with paying our respects.

Why now and coming from a member of government who took us to war on a lie.  Bandwagon jumper first class methinks but hey what do I know. Didn't see you stand up to be counted at the funerals of the young men in your constituancy who have given their lives at the behest of your government.
I simply find it distasteful that you should consider paying respects to those who died in the great war when you as a member of a political party fail miserably to equip our servicemen for the job you ask them to do and fail even more miserably to care for the wounded who return home and have to rely on charity to help them to live.

My great grand father was a well known fisherman, who was also part of the minesweepers but in WWII.
