The way I usually do it is to go to http://www.thetrainline.com and put in Grimsby to wherever you want to go to. Then click on the journey details and see where you need to change trains.

Then go back to the start and try looking at a single to and from where you change and then similar from where you change to your destination. I've saved loads doing it like this.

For example a straight return requested from Grimsby to Stoke On Trent last Saturday was nearly £50 but splitting it up into a single to and from Stockport (£9.50) and then singles to and from Stockport to SOT (£3) came to only £25, almost half price even though you are using the same trains you would if you just bought a normal return from Gy.

If you book in advance and select the actual train you are going to use then you can get some great bargains. On Thursday I'm off down to London to visit my bro, coming back on the following Monday and tickets have only cost me £13 each way. BARGAIN.

Depends where you are going. I once saved an Aunt nearly £100 on a trip from Swinton in Yorks to Southampton.

She wanted 1st return.

I booked her two singles, which saved SOME money, then second class with a paid upgrade to first. Saved even more. She HAD been quoted £132, she PAID £36.50

If you can be bothered to sit in front of a computer, the savings are out there.

National Express sometimes have some good deals.I will say though, that if you book a train in advance, make sure you get on that train because if you get on a different one you will be charged the full fare.

cheap alternative to train is megabus. . . . it's bus and train. . . upshot is I travelled london to hull (booking in advance for a quid each way. . . even when i changed the time of travel it only went up to 3.50 (4.50 return) you have to book in advance and might have to change couple of times but if you want trip to smoke it's cheap!
