A very interesting read and astute as regards a football clubs identity as regards it's geographical location and roots.

He failed to mention whether the opportunity to stand as an MP was locally or not, but I agree that he was right not to stand.

We don't need another politician in charge of our club, , for good or bad local councilors would vote out of spite rather than what's good for the community or club if if there was ever anything involving GTFC

Well that's ok then because we don't have one.

Well England football shirts instead of sporting wearing the St George's cross are now sporting St Woke's cross.

I struggle to see why it's woke. Is it because the Mail and/or Express say it is?

Why is this in any way woke? Nike say the colours were inspired by the training kit worn by England's 1966 World Cup winners.

I believe it is. Judging by the recent "why won't the BBC call Hamas terrorists" it seems a certain section of posters on here prefer to to get their news from organisations that tell them what labels to put on things, rather than think for themselves :)

I’m not sure if it’s woke or not but I doubt Nike or any other countries FA would mess around with their nations flags .

Let’s be honest the St George’s flag has always been hated by many on the Left for some reason and football fans waving it have often been sneered at for doing so.

Let’s hope they’re hit in the pocket and people refuse to buy it , and if nothing else they refuse to do so for the rip off price they’re charging

Is St George's flag hated by the left? I'm as woke as f*ck and pretty left leaning but I'm not really aware of a hatred of it. What we do hate is how it and the Union Jack have been appropriated by the right as symbols of right wing politics, nationalism, 'national pride' and racism.

I got a red cross or 2 for asking why the Nike cross is woke and I'm still waiting for someone to tell me why it is - I would get it if it was rainbow coloured or the colours of the Palestinian flag or (say) Rastafarian colours, but it's blue, red and a sort of purpley colour.

And for the record, I don't like it. The St George's cross is red on a white background.

Flags of all nations are appropriated by the extreme factions of the counties they represent.
You only have to see the repeated burning of flags in protest of the countries they represent. Plus you only have to see the Palestine flag getting waved on every pillar and post.

Like a prawn cocktail in a Michelin Star restaurant, Nike have essentially deconstructed the flag to the point where it was safe and couldn’t be considered a danger.

They have fentified the flag, for better, for worse.
Posted by: mimma, March 22, 2024, 2:26pm; Reply: 25
Would Nike do the same to the stars and stripes on the US team shirt and expect to get away with it? Does the FA have any say in the design before it is released?
American companies should respect the national flag of England not cynical alter it. It is sacrosanct
Posted by: OddShapedBalls, March 22, 2024, 4:39pm; Reply: 26
Why are we blaming Nike?  The FA signed it off, Nike will have just come up with some suggestions and the suits have gone 'yep, we'll take the one that's the wrong colour please'.  Even if they did think that obscure reference was a good idea (the training kit??? I mean, come on...) it's so obscure that I'm pretty sure stitching 1966 into the cross would have helped sell it, and/or selling an iron-on red cross for an extra £2 same way they'll want more money for numbers and names etc.    Its the morons in charge of the game who did this.

In Germany they are all up in arms because their next shirt deal has been awarded to Nike, basically because Nike are willing to pay double what Adidas are.   Seems like someone has it in for Nike at the moment!

Because its carries the colours of those people who mutilate confused kids perhaps. It certainly not red, but hey if the guys in the team don't get out of the first pool, they can pretend and play in Womens Euros 2025, now they have the right badge, eh BCT?

Reading this thread I guess there are some people on this forum who would like a tabid right wing nut running the club and writing in the Daily Mail every week.

Not everything is a left wing take-over,  Maybe - just maybe - society is kinder and more inclusive and well balanced and nuanced than the mouth-breathers would believe.

Are Nike:

A) Cultural Marxists
B) Tofu eating wokerati
C) Part of the deep state
D) Woke Warriors
E) All of the above

And, are they….

Laughing at cretins like you, getting upset and thinking of sending a semi literate Facebook message to Lee Anderson…

It’s a cr*p and arrogant idea, on a shirt that’s priced at an insulting level for ‘normal working people’ and I hope nobody buys it. There. I’ve sorted you a more liveable, calm and factual position on this, so you can take that on board, calm down, and stop babbling sh1te.

Nowhere did I say we couldn’t, you’ve put words in my mouth. I want to wave my flag and I am proud of my nation’s history and heritage but I object to definitions of patriotism and national pride being driven by right wing demagogues using my national identity to their own political ends.

I come from the land of Shakespeare, Pankhurst, Darwin, Henry Moore, Nitin Sawnhey and Anish Kapoor. Of Sunday roasts and Friday night curries. Of the lovely Asian family who live across the road from me celebrating Diwali and Christmas.

And I completely reject the vision for my country that the demagogues have. Patriotism is not nationalism.

Although I consider myself to be right wing, yes, that's correct I said it without hesitation. I find myself agreeing with you on this subject.
The cross on the shirt is indeed the colours of the 1966 training outfit.
It's amazing how very little is being said about the price in the media by all political leanings.
I believe it's wrong to disrespect any nations flag including our own by suggesting anyone who likes Thier countries flag is a foaming at the mouth racist, it's a bit thick and ignorant to suggest this.
I love the England flag and I'm proud to be English, do I hate anyone who doesn't feel the same way? No, because when you grow up you begin to realise everyone is entitled to an opinion wether it be what you agree with or not.

We need to move on from this non-story. Big game tomorrow, ATAW x.
