Artell firmly blaming the players and not himself / tactics

Later backtracks and says he is to blame also

Not listening are you? Literally says in the first thirty seconds of the interview "I've got to get more out of them"

I honestly cant bring myself to listen to his bollox. Only thing I want to see is he's gone.

He said we've got 15 cup matches left...doesn't sound like the sort of tune of someone sure we're not getting relegated.

edit: I think I must have heard what I wanted to hear. I don't think he actually said cup games...just games

Here we go. So it's a problem he says this, and it's a problem when he says we're fine. Cannot win, really.

Not happy with him using the tragic death of an academy player and his father as leverage to try and get the players on board .

I'm just pointing out he is now telling the fans that he thinks we could be.

A brief summary of what he said.He never said what his halftime talk was about. So various things are the problem and even praise the fans in the first half. Other things need sorting out he said. He avoids the question that he has lost the fans.

He still thinks the players can play his way and if not he will change his ways, but didn't say when. Yes we can go to Cheapside and watch training. He and the players know why they perform better away from home but didn't say why!

The interview then stops dead, no thank etc. so was more said that we are not privy to.

Do you think he doesn't realise the situation we're in?

His job is to decrease pressure on the squad, and deflect that. So they can not panic and play with confidence. It's a politicians answer. He cannot say we're copulated. Even if it's abundantly clear. If you want your players to play with confidence, you cannot give the impression their heads gonna get chopped off.

I don't think the answer is any more stupid than the fans demanding another answer.

Do you think he's going to say that some players are not good enough for league 2, will probably be released at the end of the season, and then rely on them to dig us out of the excrement because it's all we have?

Do you think he's going to call them incompetent and slacking off, then rely on them to run and give their best?

I don't think you realise how this works?

These interviews are all about reading between the lines, reading the things that are not said, because they cannot be said.

Still leaning on that, "We've been good away from home" bullshit. And he thinks he knows why. John should have been straight on to that! "Why is that then David?" Tbf John did suggest that we haven't had many away games recently to put that theory to the test.
Not impressed or reassured with any of that Mr Artell, no not at all.

It's gone to far now unfortunately, I can't see any way back for him after hemorrhaging so many goals at home.

Let's say somehow he manages to scrape us home, the damage is still done and come the summer season ticket sales will plummet like a stone.

So what you are saying is that a fan forks out about £50 ( ticket, drinks, food, program etc) for some form of entertainment, preferably his team winning.

There's little, if any entertainment and his team are thrashed yet again. Fans have every right to moan at the players. Moreover, we were the comeback kids, sadly no longer, a team full of team spirit sadly no longer, never say die attitude, sadly no longer.

Any of these reasons is good enough to moan but put them all together and enough is enough. When you've tasted fine wine and and then served vinegar you know the difference.

I didn't really hear anything in that interview to inspire any confidence that we are going to turn it round any time soon. Results are worse now than when Hurst was here. We have gone backwards.

Apparently we set out to be more 'pragmatic' today. I suppose losing 5-1 is better than 6-1 so to that extent it worked.

Seriously though, our current form is appalling. Our results are humiliating. Should FGR find some good form we are going down. We simply musty beat them in the next home game. I just have no confidence that we will.

How has he managed to get to the interview stage when Stockwood gave the immediate post match reaction away at Donny? That’s an absolute urine take.

He is.full of excrement. and the sooner he goes the better.

So we give him another 3 or 4/games to improve ?

We still do not win because the players are not on the same planet as him.

So what do we do then ?

Another step nearer the dreaded drop.

I give up I have enough going on in my private life than getting worked up with this nutter.

So it's goodbye for now hoping we will be a league club still when I get back.

I said exactly that to my lad as we walked out, that he'll be given until and including that game. My biggest concern is that Stockwood won't have the kahoonas to admit he was wrong and sack Artell tbh.

I did read your post and also listened to his interview. He went as far as he could about the fans without criticising them. He said something like " We know what the problem is at home, that we don't have away". That to me was another indirect way of blaming the fans; after all, they play on the grass with 11 players and subs. They have trained for the game with a game plan, so the only difference is the fans.

So reading between the lines it's the fans fault they can't kick a ball.

FGR appointed a horror candidate and got rid. Heard one of the callers to RH mention Barrow appointing Jolley for two years or whatever it was and getting rid after 7 games when it was absolutely clear he was out of his depth. They survived, we didn’t.

Nothing wrong with admitting a mistake. FWIW I think Artell was a decent candidate but appointed at the wrong time.

Would agree with that, I was quite pleased with his appointment and the fact that he wasn’t complimentary about the way we played gave me misplaced confidence that better things were around the corner. How wrong can you be we are an absolute shambles with a midfield that wouldn’t win the battle in the local Sunday League. Blokes full of crap and should have been sacked immediately after the game. Stockwood and Petit have to show some balls and bite the bullet otherwise they will lose the support of the majority of town fans.

I find it hard listening to him. I don’t know why. I heard nothing in there that makes me think we should carry on another game with him. It’s way too high risk now. What I saw today was a p*ss weak team having goals scored against them, with ease, in the same entrenched ways and it’s shameful and humiliating. That’s what it is. We are being humiliated. Made to look inept and useless and weak and conference standard. In front of a full house! All those people paying hard earned, who just want to see a team that can compete, fight and take the game to anyone who comes to BP. People will live with mixed results on that basis. Artell has taken a massive plus, a competitive advantage, a marginal gain and turned it into a pathetic weakness! Calling it a ‘problem’ (that he apparently ‘gets’ and ‘understands’ ) of playing at home FFS.

And don’t get me started on this ‘away form’ gaslight. We’ve won 1 f***ing game away from home all season, and we rejoiced at scraping a 0-0 away from home 3 weeks ago, and the away form is ‘sorted’ and playing at home is a ‘problem’. Who’s framed it like that?! Jesus - we might as well be managed by Grant F***ing Shapps if you’re gonna face the public and tell them that their perception of reality, and what they’ve seen and heard with their own eyes and ears isn’t what’s happening. Artell - he talks a good game, but he plays a sh1t one.

Final point - we had a spell of about 20 mins in the first half today - having gone 2-0 down by commiting the habitual ‘give the ball away/miscontrol it, get out of position, leave a glaring gap that you should be occupying.’ sh1t show, where we actually looked decent and made them look like what they are - a poor to middling team - by forcing them backwards, making them give the ball away..etc…but other than that, we were tw*tted, easily, by a poor team. Artell said ..”we changed formation in the second half”, and “we didn’t do well because we haven’t had time to work on it much in training”.  This absolutely chrystallises the issue. Before Colchester he was wanging on that “you don’t need a plan B, or a C, or a D….you need to make good decisions”. Today you wanted to use a plan B that you don’t believe in and you haven’t practiced. Either you’re an idiot, or we are. In those sentences he made himself look like a fool, and what’s worse…..he made the club and its fans look like fools. Had enough Dave. Please leave.

One thing I did realise today. When we’ve previously had managers who were on the cusp of being sacked, there’s always been a section of fans in favour of them staying. I’ve been both sides of that, and it’s often got heated to say the least. Not today. Everyone I spoke to and overheard were saying exactly the same thing. It was almost a bonding exercise 😎
Posted by: HertsGTFC, February 17, 2024, 9:36pm; Reply: 45
2 things …

- Not John’s fault but we never got to know why he put a loanee with approx 15 mins of EFL experience on instead of Pyke or Wilson, what is he basing that decision on?

- I’m sure the players loved being “told” how shot they where after the game, debriefing straight after a game isn’t great as the players heads will be all over the place.

I’m surprised no one’s picked up on the quite telling comment he came out with in his interview with JT.

‘We were in there an hour, we told the players some home truths, asked for their opinions and had some frank honest discussion’ (to paraphrase)

I read into that as a to and fro between management and players with the players potentially being bluntly honest about their missgivings / utter bafflement of his methods.

He said I “told” them, the last thing players need when they’ve just been smashed again is to be told how sh1t they are, their heads will be all over the place and they don’t have the bandwidth.

Just wait until Monday or bring them in tomorrow.

I’d like to spend an hour with the players cos I’m fückin baffled how they can be so cowardly and play like FIFA players with the direction pad wired the wrong way round.

For most of the goals the players look like they are actively running away from the ball and opposition players.

I think it feels like a bit of siege mentality, today it was too late for RH which is unfair on some supporters who can’t access it on digital formats later in the evening.

I'm not sure how useful these interviews are. I for one cannot listen to the latest one.  It won't inspire me nor answer any questions.  However, it seems that whatever a manager in Artell's position says is wrong. In previous games when he took the blame and didn't criticise the players, he was wrong.  Posters were saying he should have a word with them. Now that he's had a word, the should have waited until Monday or for them to let everything sink in. He has talked about the fans at home and the forum has exploded because he was blaming us.  It mentioned it because it's important. Fans have a right to leave when they want but it MUST have an affect on the players. His appointment has been a disaster and I think he should go but scrutinizing his words every week seems pointless.

Artells a bluffer who thinks the be all & end all is to make 20 passes around our 18 yard box before moving the ball forward , he had the audacity to call out hurst as a long ball merchant when in all honesty he was far from it & this is not me sticking up for hurst because his time was up it's just that you dont call someone out unless your better & artell is proving he is inept in every department , the players clearly dont want to play his style of football because they cant simple as that , please get rid of this clown before we go down again sometimes in life you make & admit a mistake over to you THE BOARD

" if you don't want to play for yourselves ... if you don't want to play for.me "

This speaks volumes. He has to go. I always sat on the fence with PH and even when he was sacked I was unsure but this guy has to go.
I'm not blaming the board for the appointment though as on paper and his track record I was excited to see what kind of football we'd produce.

They never used to be live, it's a relatively new thing. They used to always be recorded in the press portacabin and then uploaded, so they have gone back to what they have done for years. I think it's poor from Artell to wait until the radio broadcast is finished when fans, quite rightly, want an answer from him.

Let’s face it the dressing room would not have been a place of celebration after the match and you can imagine there would have been verbal, if not physical, exchanges for quite sometime so I was not surprised he didn’t get out of there very quickly.

The timing of the interview is not a big deal to me but the content was much more worrying as I heard nothing to give me any confidence. Seems our best option is to have BP shut down for refurbishment and play all our remaining fixtures away from home where, by the sound of it, we are a much better team!!

I don't know what to think.  Our away form hasn't been great all season.  Our home form in recent weeks has become diabolical.  During lockdown, Gary Croft, as a former professional with a strong allegiance to the town and club, had quite a lot of interesting things to say about the situation under Ian Holloway.  If there's anyone who doesn't go to home matches but listens to the RH commentaries instead, I'd be keen to know what Crofty's thoughts are on our current situation?

I don't know what to think.  Our away form hasn't been great all season.  Our home form in recent weeks has become diabolical.  During lockdown, Gary Croft, as a former professional with a strong allegiance to the town and club, had quite a lot of interesting things to say about the situation under Ian Holloway.  If there's anyone who doesn't go to home matches but listens to the RH commentaries instead, I'd be keen to know what Crofty's thoughts are on our current situation?

Listen to him at the end of the game on BBC Sounds. He’s not happy, nor is JT for that matter.

Croft was scathing yesterday, but stopped short of saying he thinks Artell has lost the dressing room. He refused to comment on that question, which summed it up. Croft also said that the owners need to call Artell in for a meeting and tell him to give them 4 reasons why he should stay.

That's interesting - thanks.  From that, it sounds as if he's more inclined to hold the manager to account than the players and their capabilities.

Only listened as we'd left early (confession!) but there's enough there to suggest that, as a Town fan, he wants rid.

Fancy having to commentate on that on your 50th birthday!

The way he spoke to JT and answered the questions reminded me of the saying ' Deadman Walking '. After all his description of what happen in the dressing room sounded like he's lost it.

I am holding out for hope in that a frank and open discussion between the group may hit home to all sides, maybe the players can realise that a relegation on their CV will look shite, especially for those who already have one or even two already, its career suicide for them and also on the managerial front that the players may make some clear points about what or how they are being asked to operate.
HAS to bring a reaction now, if you have an hour or more of frank discussion and then dont turn up in your next training or game with a revised  approach then they can all fck off quite frankly.

Do relegations on players CVs truly make an impact? It certainly didn’t impact Rogers, Eastwood & Mullarkey who walked into deals with us, then again that says more about us I guess.

Those out of contract will already have their agents out there taking to clubs.

Not sure having "relegation" on you CV is a problem, it didn't stop us signing some on.
