A bit of a change up front and it's good to see Rose on the bench. Thompson captain is a surprise, so I wonder if he's been lined up for the job next year

Pitch looks heavy. Probably why Rose and Vernham on the bench.

Not surprised at Thompson at Captain - I thought he’d be lined up for the job next season. Rose leads from the front by example but better having someone in the middle of the park talking to the defence

I'm all for that, as a captain in midfield is better located than upfront, or defence.

I agree. He stands constantly bellowing on the touchline every week and it achieves nothing. It can’t help the players, who look, almost to a man, to be completely inept and unresponsive. Imagine being cr*p at your job and having your boss endlessly yelling at you. Just a sh*tshow since he’s been here, barring the odd scratchy result. He absolutely should’ve gone after Doncaster.

This is completely male masturbation. Most of our first touches today have been so bad that the second touch has been a tackle. There's just a fundamental lack of footballing ability throughout this squad which is getting so badly exposed I'm seriously worried we've not got enough of a cushion to survive.

See all the Artell ouf brigade are having a feast!!..2 games ago we beat MKD with grit n determination, what I can't understand is why he's gone back to Artell ball when we know it puts pressure on a back line that struggles with it.
We are truly excrement in the final third, midfield is a joke, Hume has less pace than a snail with broken legs, abd Clifton is too far up the pitch giving Mullarkey no cover.
I'm not sure I want to blame Artell but we do look vulnerable again, something I thought we'd plugged after the Donny game..

Is that one shot on target?  Got to be more incisive.  We don't cross fast enough but not enough bodies in the box to get a touch or slide in. And, we don't shoot. We have nobody that can beat a defender one on one.  need both Vernam and Rose on.
Posted by: sonofmadeleymariner, March 29, 2024, 3:54pm; Reply: 120
Thank god thats over. That was a urine poor 45mins.

Barrow haven't even really got out of second gear all game.

They've had some luck in front of goal (something we rarely get or create for ourselves) an awkward clearance lands to the man in white not one of the two in red and its a simple tap in after the pass and we block a shot and it lands right in the feet of another white excrement for another simple tap in.

Our strikers not even feeding off scraps, midfield once again slow, unimpressive and soft and our back 5 are all over the place. I reaply feel for the fans who have gone today.

Not sure Artell can be to blame for professional footballers being absolutely incapable of passing to a teammate.

It’s been a very long time since all 11 players were absolutely dogshit, but to a man they’ve all been flipping embarrassing.

Yep, exactly this. Every time their left winger gets the ball he rinses Clifton and Mullarkey for pace and actually has a threat. Up the other end when we have the ball we just play ponderous slow passes between Clifton, Green and Mullarkey which their defence comfortably sits behind and easily clear when a town player inevitably either takes a bad touch or makes a poor pass. By no means are Barrow anything special but we have to get some wingers on rather than just hoping Wilson or Obikwu create something out of the non existent service they're recieving.

"can't even control a ball properly"
My mate goes on about this at every game, it drives him fukin nuts.
These blokes get paid good money to do a job most of us would love to do and they can't even control a football which is a basic of the game.

No chance would I be risking Rose or Vernam in this in a game that we’ve lost.

The pitch is dreadful and cutting up massively, it's exactly the type of surface you wouldn't want to risk a half fit player on. That being said I don't think we've lost yet, we've gifted them two goals and been allowed to have a lot of possession. It's a shame Eisa isn't on the bench, I'd definitely have chucked him on at half time in these circumstances.

Most possession (again) at 58% but doing nothing with it.  Opposing teams don’t need to do much to score with less time on the ball.  Sutton scoring on HT continues their good recent form.  Come on Salford.

(Hunt and Amos back in York team.  The Shop and Mclaughlin come into the team.  Chesterfield score early).

If Paul Hurst had still been in charge - Town would not have been close to relegation.
That decision is brinksmanship by owners that don’t understand manager/ player relationships.

Hope we score 3 more than Barrow in the second half.

That will just put them in the firing line.  Nobody could get much out of this team.  A lot of what went wrong today was basic stuff. First touch was terrible, decision making was really poor and we couldn't create any space.

Looking at it objectively, we have just lost against 3rd & 5th in the league. The results around us have gone against us but I’m still convinced 5-6 points still keeps us in this division. The previous 6 games before the past 2 show me we’re more than capable of doing that.

The manner of the defeat today worries me a bit, the sheer lack of footballing ability on show was tough to watch from start to finish. Not going to meltdown over it just yet, Sutton need to be 4 points better than us in 2 less games, that’s still going to be some run of form from them and an absolutely disastrous run of form from us.

Some will spend the evening revelling in it as a chance to hammer Artell again, but I’m not sure he can do much about the things we saw on show today.

They are all at fault for all 3 goals. We have a complete lack of skill in this team without Vernam (who will no doubt be injured again in the next couple of games). Why is our centre half able to dribble better than all our attacking players that started today!  It's just a complete poo show nearly every week. ??)
Posted by: drew peacock, March 29, 2024, 5:19pm; Reply: 239
So putting Pearson and Davies in charge will give our midfield legs and make them pass it to a team mate? People will be calling for Hunt next. Klopp couldn't get a tune out of these players, Vernam looked lively when he came on, keep him fit (unlikely) for the rest of the season and that could make a difference

I agree that we should probably still retain League status but your last sentence bothers me. He’s been managing us for four months, if he can’t do much then who can? He’s the manager, he picks the team, he made 5 signings in January.

I can't see us winning again this season so 3 or 4 draws is all we can expect that gives us 43 points at most .

Colchester if they best us will finish above us.

Forest Green have a horrific run in so can't see them staying up.

Sutton have been doing well lately but also have a very hard run in and fewer games left than the rest of us so it will be very very tight.

Looking at the final table I hoping for us to stay up Just.

Forest Green bottom, Sutton on 42 points going down as well.

We surviving by one point .

We must never ever find ourselves in this position again.

Sort it Jason and Andrew start again next season with a decent manager sorry Dave you have got to go.

Give the new man the tools to do the job and we might win a few games in the future.

I agree that we should probably still retain League status but your last sentence bothers me. He’s been managing us for four months, if he can’t do much then who can? He’s the manager, he picks the team, he made 5 signings in January.

100! flipping. Percent

He’s the manager. What changes has he implemented? I honestly feel we’ve got worse. I dont “ revel’ in us losing. But this appointment has just not worked. It happens.

Well you never know. It might spark something. Wasn't
expecting anything today but I'd definitely get rid if we get spanked by Bradford. TBH I would have sacked Artell weeks ago.

But during the 6 game unbeaten run the consensus was all those players had improved, now after 2 games those players are all excrement again along with the manager? I don’t buy it, people are seemingly desperate to rip them to bits at the first opportunity.

I just don’t see a team that comes out with any belief of any determination. That’s down to the management. Come on 1878 , admit your appointment of DA has been a mistake and swallow your pride and get rid of this clown at thd end of the season regardless of the cost . We’ll probably just scrape home but if we’ve  got any hope for next year he’s not the answer

Well at the very least he won't be able to say that we have only lost one away game since he has been here.

Sick of saying it but you will always struggle to win, or even compete in, matches without a midfield and we just haven’t got one decent midfield player. In reality today Barrow created next to nothing but scored three goals every one from an individual error other than that we were never under great pressure. Whitfield was nippy and caused some problems but it’s not like they created and missed a bucket full of chances so we basically have to play matches without making a single error at the back otherwise it’s defeat.

Problem is how do we get enough momentum going forwards to create and score goals? As.we discussed after the Wrexham game the best option might be to recall Smith, put Clifton back in midfield with Andrews and Thompson and hope that the fact HC can run about will make some positive impact on our ability going forwards.

As for Artell nothing will change until the end of the season so not worth any lengthy debate but I have a terrible feeling that today’s stats will indicate we had more possession, territorial advantage, made more passes etc. and this alone will keep management and owners happy until Bradford arrive.

Not sure if this was mentioned at the time, but the players looked like they were blowing out their @rses after about 40 minutes. Yes, the pitch was heavy but I’ve seen more pace from Johnny ward getting a round in!

Town struggle week to week with fitness and with another game on Monday - how long before they are blowing out their @rses v Bradford. People say Town need 5,6,7 however many points. My glass is half empty but I can't see where the next point is coming from let alone the 5,6,7.

I expected us to lose today but not to go to yet another level of ineptness. The only hope I can cling onto is Vernam & Rose galvanise us to somehow survive

Vernam will play 1 or 2 more games and disappear on sick leave for 6 months again, its criminal Hurst was allowed to spend money on a transfer for him

It’s too late to sack him and hope for an improvement IMO. He should have gone after Donny. Let’s not forget he only changed approach because he was forced into it.

Hurst made 12 signings and had 24 games and relegated in to last spot. So it could be worse.

Agreed - these signings were a bit strange - not sure who signed them or wanted to sign them.
Anyway, if Charles Vernam scores the winner against Bradford (nearly) all is forgiven.

Our last four games have been against the teams currently in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th. So 4 points from those games is not bad going.  Our fixtures get easier from here on so we can pick up more points.

FGR are now in big trouble, six points behind us with six games left and an awful run in. Colchester are just two points behind us with a game in hand and we have to go there. Staying ahead of them will not be easy especially if they beat us.

So It looks to me that we need to stay ahead of Sutton to stay up. Who thought they would win three on the bounce? Crazy. Plus they have a very winnable game on Monday, home to Swindon. So it is incredibly important that we beat Bradford to maintain the gap.

After that Sutton play Stockport (H), Harrogate (A), Crawley (H) and MK (A). Pretty tough. They would do well to get more than 6 points from those games. So they could be on for a 42 point total. 45 at best I would say. So I think we need 46 to stay up.

💯,, having to change his whole philosophy basically lost any credibility he had . 1878 bottled the tough decision after the Donny game . He can come on DN35  and come across as a good bloke but to me this is basically a desperate effort to connect with the fan base . Sorry Dave but we’re not stupid here in GY . We’ve been through so much the last 15 years , no one is going to pull the wool over our eyes mate . We’re damaged goods and know the signs . Take your bolloc.ks somewhere else .

He's gone from "we definitely won't get relegated" when he came here to "we can fight our way out of relegation" or words to that affect in an interview last week.

The fact that Kieran Green gets in our starting lineup is exactly why we’re in this mess. Our midfield is woeful and has been all season.

Maybe going down for a 3rd time and staying for a few years will humble our fans and get their chip of our shoulder but I doubt it. Won't be no Hollywood Jesus figure to bail us our either as the smell of fish and the boarded up buildings aren't as appealing as the villages of Wales full of Scousers who managed to make some money and leave another former fishing docks rotting dump.

Same as the wrexham game.

What really annoys me is that Barrow as like Wrexham, won the game way before the end of the 1st half and basically took there foot off the gas thinking about the next fixture. We were game managed after the first 45mins - Its bloody embarrassing.

I'm not going to bang on about times past when we were a 2nd tier team but this dross has been served up to us for too long and barring a decent run from slade we have had very little relief from it.

when is this club going to finally get its bottom in gear

Something is majorly wrong with the club and has been for the best part of 2 decades - we are regular losers and it's in our DNA now , even the new owners are finding out how difficult it is to turn the ship around as a league club .

2 good football  league seasons  in 20 odd years is dreadful for a club of any standard , nevermind one with a decent heritage in the upper tiers of the English game .

I honestly thought we had bottomed out when we got relegated feom league 1 at Tranmere in the 03/04 season and apart from the mentioned Slade season we have punched well below our weight ; even before there was any sort of real financial disparity between clubs in this division and even now you see team after team , year after year punching above their weight - just look at Horkar Street and Barrow today .

I honestly don't know what the future holds , but when the fans are patronised for having a moan and told to 'back the team ' people need to be mindful that the fans have endured , continued to support and have the right to an opinion ; especially after such a long and painful demise .

I don't blame Artell , he's a very small portion of our recent past and current situation . I'm not even sure I blame the players - we should never have ended up in the position that we have to recruit of such low quality in the main .

I really don't want us to be in the National league again , we don't deserve having to endure anymore .

Posted by: hampshiremariner, March 29, 2024, 8:16pm; Reply: 268
None of it should be blamed on any one individual, I agree. The decline has been endemic since we left the Championship all those years ago. People blamed it on the EU and thought non existent levelling up would do away with all the problems. In fact, nothing has been levelled up. Our ground is decrepit and they have been trying for 20 years to get a new stadium. The councils have no money to invest in a football stadium, yet a thriving football club brings pride to any area.

Poor recruitment has given us a squad that cannot play together and we seem to lack leaders and fight.
If we get out of this, I will start going to church, because it will be a miracle. Another weekend messed up.

I know our fans can get prickly at times but given that we’ve endured more than two decades of almost entirely shite it is understandable. Other than the two promotion seasons and one solitary cup run (and both of those seasons had long stretches where we were abysmal) some of the better times include failing in the non league play offs and lower mid table obscurity in L2. How desperately sad and pathetic is it that those are the good times?!

Other clubs have had large falls down the leagues as well but I can’t think of any other club who have had such a consistently long and large fall from grace this century. The fact that we’re still one of the best supported teams on the road in the division as well as averaging almost 6500 in a season where we’ve won a magnificent 8 games is absolutely astonishing. Other clubs’ fans would have given up by now. For all their good attendances currently look at Lincoln’s fan base. They went down one division and deserted them almost immediately. Couldn’t fill our away end for years and were getting sub 2000 attendances at home. Imagine how few would have stuck by them if they were three divisions below where they started this century and had had 20 years of consistent shít.

But I do feel like the light is fading somewhat and you can see it in this forum. Posters who have stuck by this club through the darkest of times are becoming increasingly fed up and out of hope. Even if we don’t go down this season, we all know that unless something major changes that we’ll be back down there playing Dorking and Tamworth in a season or two. I honestly don’t know why this club has been so bad for two decades but the fan base deserves so much more.

Of course you do. You just happen to have only just joined the forum a few days before we play Barrow, your username is BAFC72 which is the year Barrow went out of the league, you have quite an in depth knowledge of Barrow and little knowledge of Town as you seemed to suggest Rose will cause Barrows defenders problems because they’re slow (Rose is certainly not quick despite his many attributes) and have a detailed knowledge of the Western Lancashire railway system and its disruptions affecting two games involving a team you don’t support, that you supposedly didn’t go to and would have very little reason to have any knowledge of if you lived in Nettleham. Near Lincoln. I too check the railway disruptions on the opposite side of the country for football matches that I won’t be attending.

Barrow have got a good manager, but even so Telford and Stockton and others wouldn’t be there if they didn’t train in Manchester. They are effectively another Greater Manchester side. Stockton came on loan from Burton - an experienced sh!thouse sort of forward that we’ve been crying out for. Obikwu looks a decent lad but just not we need.

Even so moaning about our inability to ever have more than one decent front player at the club is pointless when we are defending like Keystone Cops…all 3 goals today. Frankly I don’t know what to make of that. We are playing teams that are “on the beach” next week, but that is immaterial if shoot ourselves in the foot like the last 2 games. I’m feeling very gloomy about our prospects tonight - and if it goes to the last game, there’s feckin Orsi…

We make plenty of mistakes at the back but it seems virtually every team we play have players who capitalise on them and score. Or is it just that we don’t have a keeper that makes many saves?

We seem to need umpteen chances to score a goal. The conclusion is that we have a poor keeper, a poor defence, and poor forwards. May as well admit we have poor midfielders too.

So it’s no great mystery why we are where we are. We need  a complete overhaul of the coaching team and playing squad.
