Posted by: Manchester Mariner, March 16, 2024, 3:56pm; Reply: 63
Probably should be 2-1 up after the Obikwu and Hollohan chances and that Lapslie should at least have a yellow. But still, we continue to show with our recent battling qualities that we're better than our league position.
Posted by: Mayaman, March 16, 2024, 3:57pm; Reply: 64
Obikwu started well but lost his composure a little bit.  Let's hope DA can steady him a bit.
Posted by: sonofmadeleymariner, March 16, 2024, 3:57pm; Reply: 65
Decent 1st half. Scored a good team goal. We've had so good moments of play going forward, but Gillingham just keep pinching the ball off us at the last moment.

We need to work out at half time who is marking who because until we do Gillingham will continue to put pressure on us.

excrement ref is excrement once again, Tharmes yellow was harsh, and they should have had atleast 2.

Hopefully we can pick it up a little in the second half and grab a winner and all other results continue to go our way.
Posted by: Teestogreen, March 16, 2024, 3:59pm; Reply: 66
Obikwu could be distracted by his parent club getting to the semi finals of the FA Cup - hopefully DA can either re- focus his mind or take him off.

Yep, pretty much as I see it. When they’re in possession our wing backs are often really deep giving their wing backs loads of space to get forward and time to pick out an accurate cross. They look to have a threat aerially up front and concerned about them feeding of a knock down.

Wilson looking very good and sharp but maybe second half needs Pyke to come on to give more assistance as Okiwu struggling a bit although his closing down of their players is excellent.

Better game than I thought it would be they are relatively decent .

It's just refreshing we are now always in games and with a chance of a result at half time .
Posted by: pontoonlew, March 16, 2024, 4:01pm; Reply: 69
But for some woeful decision making we’d probably be winning this game, Obikwu looks like an academy player again today after a good few weeks. Holohan had a lovely assist but he’s followed on from Tuesday with multiple poor decisions in good areas.

Gillingham look pretty decent, going to need a big half to get something out of it.

Tharme and Thompson are making such a massive difference to us, Hume was a bit hit n miss, Gav tries too hard almost, Cartwright commanding on crosses but think he could've come out quicker for the goal tbh.
Wilson run his socks off, scored a good goal, all in all a satisfactory result, just need to keep Moneybags FC at arms length next weekend now.

I think we'd all have taken a point before the game. Effectively 7 points above a relegation spot right now thanks to goal difference and still with a game in hand over FGR.

A few more wins ought to just about do it for us.

This run of four tough games, starting with MKD is going much better than expected. 4 points from 2 is beyond what I thought we would get, and FGR now have to win 2 and draw 1 more than us to overtake us, with them only having 8 games left to do it.

I agree with you as I thought points from FGR and Sutton would be the only sure ones and a lucky point elsewhere. I don't know what the team and Artell have said behind doors but it is certainly working.

Happy with a point. We are getting better. This league is so unpredictable and every week there are results that look unlikely ‘on paper’. Notts are on an alarming slide and Swindon as well. We have to keep diggung in hard and collecting points by being steadfast and believing.  I think the lads are doing well now after that horrific spell in Jan and early Feb. Things are looking up. Gillingham, managed by Stephen Clemence, have been doing quite well, so ‘on paper’ they would have expected to win today.
I can recall how his late dad, Ray, played at BP for Scunthorpe in the early days of his career and we put six or seven past him. Ray later said that he thought that was his league career ended. As a mate off his I am glad that proved wrong, but GTFC has always been my team and I’m proud to be a Mariner.

From the Gills forum:

We've lost our record of taking higher away attendances to each of our opponents than anyone has brought to Priestfield this season. We took 407 to Grimsby, they've brought 425 to us. Fair play to them.

Thats a great effort

It's been a good day a very good day result wise. Don't forget we will be at home next week and the others away? No-one can moan with today's outcome we didn't deserve more than a point...happy days

Really pleased with that point, thought we'd get all 3 wehebwe went ahead but lack of concentration allows them an immediate equaliser. Following that we discarded our hard to beat style for attacking substitutions and didn't really work, they had a number of good chances and if they weren't such an appallingly dreadful side in front of goal I think we're letting in at least a couple like we would have earlier in the season. As it is we get lucky and cling on and take a decent away point, with the Sutton/FG result and Colchester only getting a draw it's a really good result.

Teams below us begining to run out of games to run us down. Perhaps a good learning experience for Artell as well not to get ahead of himself, we're still very much at our best as a battling defensive 5 at the back side making us hard to break down.

A good day for us today. We have increase our advantage over FGR and maintained our advantage over Colchester despite the fact that we were away while they were both at home.

Given the April fixtures, which are much harder for our rivals, I think they really needed to get ahead of us this month. That looks very unlikely now.

If Salford don’t win tomorrow they will be right in our sights too.

Next week it’s Wrexham, who have the same number of points as MKD, though the vast majority of them from home games. I think we can win that one.

Really decent result and more evidence of our defensive resilience.

I thought the changes at half time made us worse and put us under more pressure, but we weathered it mightily.

A Sutton win is a great result for us. Just need to keep the points ticking over and we will be fine.

We'll take that and move on. Let's have a rest and give it a real go against an inconsistent Wrexham. But Lord I'm not asking for a decent ref, that's too much too ask, I'll take a half decent one for this one please!

Tired performance from a team that has worked its balderdash off for over a month now. Artell decided to go for blood after half time and it didn't quite pay off. It made us easier to break down and Gills had alot more success. That said, Artell did make further  changes and we earnt a well deserved point.

Thompson and Tharme were colossal yet again with Doug for my money just edging it.

Well done town

From the Gills forum:

We've lost our record of taking higher away attendances to each of our opponents than anyone has brought to Priestfield this season. We took 407 to Grimsby, they've brought 425 to us. Fair play to them.

Thats a great effort

Yep. That was also a warm, sunny Summer’s day when they were top of the league.

This can’t be understated. They must be absolutely shattered.

Good to have the break from mid-week games. Hopefully we’ll get some players back. Rose especially but also Vernam.

As far as I'm aware we had 525 fans there, 100 more than they said and 118 more than their 407. Also, our fans appeared to drown out their's for most of the match, a credit to them all. I hope they all have a safe journey home.

Was chatting over a beer in the pub tonight, does anyone know where the connection with Aalst comes from?

Always good to see them

I think they literally googled an English club of similar size who play in black and white! I’m certain I heard that.
