If not non-footy then at least one for the 433 page Scunthorpe thread

Wouldn't be the first time they'd have sacked a manager while in a play-off position. Look how that ended up.

The Fishy's obsession with Scunny never ceases to amaze. Further confirmation that social media brings out the worst in most of us.

I hope they hit a run of form and get promoted. My family history shows that our DNA is liberally spread across Grimsby, Scunthorpe and Lincoln catchments. Much better to have a few derbies to chat about.

I'd rather keep forgetting about Scunny.

Oh c'mon, they're our nearest geographical rivals so of course there is going to be a heightened level of interest in them, same as Lincoln and to a lesser extent Hull.

This isn't bringing out the worst in people, it's about friendly rivalries within the game.  I work with and am friends with Scunthorpe fans, having that momentary crowing over them is glorious.  Just like they loved it when they were lording it over us.

I'm delighted they didn't go under, I hope their new owners go onto build a sustainable football club at the heart of the community.  But it doesn't mean I can't have a wry smile every time they lose and deep down want them to miss out on promotion, suffer relegation the next season and eventually find themselves in a league where evening games have to be floodlit by the headlights of players cars.  I'm absolutely certain that the vast majority of their fans feel exactly the same way about us.

It would be bloody boring if our only interest in football was the Town result every Saturday.

I’m in between - not quite as harsh as you there, but now the club is saved they need some prolonged suffering at their current level before they come back. As I said above the
main thing is we get a league derby with Lincoln before Scunthorpe and, dare I say it, Tahgers…

I would allow Scunny an FA Cup First Round derby with us (after they've played 17 qualifiers, of course).

In a couple of season yes. Before that I’d like them to play Brigg Town in a qualifying round and at least be taken to a replay…

It’s far too early to sack him they need to wait for Paul hurst to become a free agent so he can complete the circle ( think he may have to skip Ipswich )

There is no truth whatsoever in the rumour that Sam Allardyce is to take over until Scunthorpe get promoted. When asked for his comments he said  " I am now 69 and if I live to be 100 I don't expect to live the last 31 years of my life at a fcking village in Wales that no one has heard of.

Given their manager’s alleged penchant for dubious, extralegal income streams, I’d suggest Jimmy fixing it might be at the very heart of their current problems…

I'm led to believe from a Scunthorpe supporter friend, that 2 players are on £2500 a week, and one on £2000 a week.

We suddenly have 3 pages on a new/unsubstantiated  Scunthorpe thread when we already have have 433 pages on the Iron.
I don't fully understand how our forum is governed but maybe this should be merged before it gets out of hand & views/debate  on the Mariners become secondary to those of Scunthorpe United?

I’d believe that, judging by the rumours about their total wage bill. I really hope they stay down, then they’ll HAVE to trim that wage bill. But, if we stay up and they go up, that combination wouldn’t bother me at all. They’re gonna up one one year, they’ll not stay down there forever (although, if Carlsberg did non-league stint scenarios….).

There must be something slightly soul destroying about dreaming of promotion, only to realise that the prize is a place in the National League.

Dave Fivenames could afford to offer what ever contracts the players asked for because he had no intention of paying them !
If you think the abuse of our players is bad check this out, and they are still 2nd in the league .

Dhm posted 'rivals' and you misquoted ' neighbours'. Clee Town are our neighbours but not our rivals, due to the gap between us.

So provided Clee Town can read, they won't take offence 😛

Scunny remain our nearest geographical rivals, although that's more dubious the longer they spend in NLN I admit 😀

Wow, I get it but at the start of the season they nearly never had a club, generally getting out of that level needs everyone on the same page.

That was us at Braintree when we lost 5-0 its the shock and utter despair .The fans love the Club and sadly a lot of players just don't care.

With this new TV deal the gap between NL and league 2 will get bigger you would have thought , it's emptied out of the bankrolled clubs now , but there are  still a few that will always be substantially more well backed than Scunny .

That gap from league 2 to NLN must be much much more significant in terms of turnover and ability to attact player (unless you are willing to pay them high end league 2 wages that you have not got like Dodgy Dave ) .

They won't be a FL club for a long long time if ever again , unless someone is willing to bankroll them which seems unlikely .

Cal Roberts will be one of those high earners.  He was one of the best players in the Conference at County before moving to Aberdeen on a 3-year-deal.  Just a year into that he agreed a move to the Conference North.  His one year in the SPL was injury riddled, but he's not going to rip up the remaining 2-years of his contract for pennies.

Their excrement or bust approach always had high risk to really screw them over, which is only increasing the more likely they fail to get automatic promotion.  Failure to get out that league will be severe for them.  Their current average of pretty much smack on 4000 a gate needs a 25% boost to reach that 5000 figure that 'It Bites' talks about.  They've reached that figure on 3 occasions out of 19, one of which was the community day against Chester.  The previous 3 games prior that drew an average of 3400.

Fail to go up and they won't get those gates next season.  Not a chance.  Still have the likes of Roberts (who has a further year to run on his contract) and no-one is going to be shelling out £2000-2500 a week for a player who has managed 628 league minutes this season on the back of just 85 in the SPL the year before.

Even if they go up.  Are their gates ever going to reach 5000?  Probably not.  They were averaging around 4000 in League One.

I hope, for their sake, that they can find a way to be sustainable but Hilton's approach has potentially lumbered them with a massive burden.  Lesser gates, still got high earners so you have to cut the cloth elsewhere (in all areas).  On the pitch that can only mean lower wages for everyone else which more often than not equals lower quality, therefore less chance of success, less fans coming through the gates, less money to spend....very, very vicious circle.

oh they've had it if they dont go up via the play offs, some of the wages they're paying is crazy. They'll rot in regional football for a long time

Most clubs get a jump in crowds when a dodgy owner is removed and the new owners are local and / or fans and perceived as having the good of club at heart. We did, Oldham did, and Scunny did, even with 3names who clearly wasn’t that. They are in safe hands in terms of asset stripping risk, but the financial numbers will be very challenging going forward.

Even if they don’t go up I think the fans will stick with them for another season, JD will be gone and they will have a reasonable pot from ST sales. Another season in NLN to rebuild the finances could be no bad thing for them.  If they go up and struggle which they could well do without a big cash injection it could end up a worse outcome in the long run. I’m really surprised that York and Kiddy have struggled so much. If they came back down like Kiddy look like doing, that’s when the fans could lose interest - a bit like we’ve been saying on here if we end up back in the NL.
