No secret that I’m a fan of his, and over the last few weeks the players have been deadly silent on social media- probably for the best,  but fair play to him coming out holding his hands up for the miss yesterday in the dying minutes

I know some feel he is limited, but he’s certainly given us more good times than bad since he joined and personally feel we stand a better chance staying up if we have him in that team week in week out

I have an opinion on Gav but if he's beating himself up about yesterday he shouldn't, the problem we have does not sit with him.

If he'd have been playing a bit more the maybe he would have scored at the end, not his fault that.

Looking at the dysfunctional squad we have his contribution could be massive on and off the pitch,

I personally can’t stand players apologising for stuff on the pitch that’s outside of their control. Players miss chances. There is no reason to apologise for it. It’s not like he intentionally missed.

It seems a bit odd to apologise for that but not for all of the times he hasn’t been arşed to track back this season.

There have been a great many forgettable Town players in my time following the club; Holohan ain’t one of them. His last minute equaliser at Meadow Lane (and all it led to) and his two penalties at Southampton are memories I will take with me to the grave.

If you saw him at the end of the match you would have seen how distraught he was with his miss. You can always question some players commitment but never Gav's.

I’m sorry but that’s just an unnecessary and nasty post.

He might feel better when he realises he cost us 2 points not 3 😬

For me he is 1 of the 2 best players in the side - the other being Rose.

He has nothing to apologise for.
Massive player in this club for the rest of this season

Played all of his career at this level and lower but what he lacks in natural ability he more than makes up for big hearted commitment. Probably the epitomy of the best of the second Paul Hurst era.

I quite like him. He has his faults but at least he has a bit of pride and commitment. He would certainly be in my midfield ahead of Green, Clifton and Andrews.
In my opinion, a decent lower League 2 or a good top 7 National League player. We might need him next season if the unthinkable happens.

Very pleased to see him in the squad yesterday and if we have and chance of staying up it’ll be with Gav playing. Next best pro to Rose.

I also thought that about Gav and the unthinkable, but thinking the unthinkable brings me out in a cold sweat and panic so I have to revert to distraction techniques - picking up the bass and playing along to some reggae is the go to, I find Bob Marley comforting…

We need characters and leaders in this squad, and Gav is certainly one of them. He’s got his flaws, so have most players in this league, but I feel like he gets it and more importantly, he’s got a goal contribution in him. Similar reasons I wanted us to keep Luke Waterfall until the end of the season. I look through our squad and there’s not many I’d want in the trenches next to me.

It really is the unthinkable. I have recently had reoccurring nightmares of watching us lose in a glorified bus stop at Tamworth.
I used to find Bob Marley comforting, but unfortunately due to drug testing at work I can no longer indulge !

I await his apology for dreadful basic arithmetic!

Serious note though, I think he's this seasons Clifton. Even if he doesn't have the best of games, we look better with him on the pitch.

For sure he's got flaws in his game but consistently proved to be our best midfielder over the course of this season. Artell's continued decision to not play him is a huge error in my opinion.

Unneeded but you have to respect it.
I think Gav is a steady league 2 player and deserves more game time

Why shouldn't he apologise?  It was an absolute sitter. Anything happens at the other end, we get on the players backs.  We know what he's made of.  Accept his apology and move on.

Good angle here from the club, shows it took a nick off a defender & flicked up just before it reached him -

Having seen the video of the last minute chance, don’t think it was a simple tap in on Saturday. A win would have been great, but can’t complain about a draw.

Thought Clifton had one of his better games too.

Like any league 2 midfielder, Gav has his weak points but he always gives his all and never shys away, even when he's having a bad game. I don't think you can ask for more than that.
Posted by: Spurn boy, February 26, 2024, 4:34pm; Reply: 24
All we ever ask of our players is commitment, and irrespective of the result if the players have shown commitment and put effort into their performance we should be happy.

Might get a few pelters for this, but...

It's easier to apologise for miss at the end of a game in which we competed and ultimately got something from.

Players aren't so keen to apologise after losing 5-1 at home to a local/relegation rival in which we embarrassed ourselves.

That said, I really like Holohan, think he's been a good player for us. He's definitely a 'Hurst' character, in that he's an honest hard-working player.

I think his experience is needed in the side right now. If we get a crucial penalty on Saturday you'd want him to take it!

Looking at that video it’s not even a bad miss, the deflection means it just pings off his shin, not sure he knew a great deal about it

I've got to say we thought he had a decent game Saturday and along with Danny rose was everything positive about the massive improvement in performance and commitment.
The ball bobbles just before he attacks it resulting in it shinning off his knee, at least he's in there getting on the end of things.
He's got nothing to apologise for.
If you want to make amends Gav, help us put forest green to the sword on Saturday, we must also do our part and support the lads instead of moaning at the first sight of a problem.
Come on town.......

Agree with that; it’s just one of those where attempting to clear the bar from that distance intentionally would be nigh on impossible, and yet he’s managed it whilst trying to do the opposite. Not one to point the finger over, just incredibly frustrating more than anything else - that goes in and the dynamic and complexion of Saturday’s game changes markedly for the better.

I will never criticise skill, only effort. Misses happen. Players are human. He doesn't need to apologise for this.

However, some of his tracking back and defensive work, including standing around in the box flat footed with a cross coming in while a person he could have challenged for a header a few weeks back puts it in the net, yes. It's about 8 I've seen from him this season where lackluster defensive work from Gav has played a part in goals.

Gav's on the ball and attacking is fine. Probably one of the more effective we have in central areas for now attacking wise, but off the ball, defensively, a liability so cannot be trusted in a deeper role.

After Rose, hands down my favourite current town player

Looking at that clip he looks like he’s past the last defender on that angle so possibly was given offside anyway? Won’t have been easy to tell as the free kick for offside will have been taken the same place as a goal kick. Would probably have been more heartbreaking if he had have scored and it had been disallowed!

If he’d played every game this season I’m pretty confident we’d be in a healthier position than we are now .

Like quite a few of our players ,he's decent if used correctly and to his strengths - he puts a shift in and when not asked to get on the ball too much can be effective ; he's very good at arriving in the box and has a good shot on him .

I would like to see him in the middle , ideally with Thompson when he's fit and just asked to do what he does best (it looked like the penny had dropped somewhat with the Morecambe performance ) Clifton on the left with Holahan & Thompson in the middle and then one of the more attacking wide players on the right would give me a lot more confidence .

I'm not sure whether the setup against Morecambe was more by circumstance than design though ?

I suppose we will see on Saturday as a good few should be back available you would have thought .

I though Obikwu had a good game on Saturday , he's obviously green but looks a better all-round option to me than Pyke or Wilson ; there was one really nice bit of play on Saturday were he won a 50/50 with his head and got cleaned out , quite cynical from them , something that we seem to struggle with - stopping the play when the other team is on the counter .

With everyone’s current mindset regarding Gav I know this is going to be unpopular. Some have said he is a league 2 player and I would disagree. Although he has many good traits, including good character and the ability to to score, under pressure from the spot, he severely lacks in some of the basics, specifically passing. I would go far as saying he has been consistently poor at even the most basic passing, even when not under pressure. This team is so poor and has been all season, which in part explains our current predicament. As such it’s easy for certain players with certain characteristics to “shine”. But let’s not fool ourselves, there are reasons why Gav has had limited game time and that’s because at this level he’s below average at best.

I agree.

The fact that Gav’s become the preferred option just shows how weak we are in midfield. Andrews and Green should be nowhere near the starting eleven at this level.
