Again you'd have to say this looks a good signing and a major upgrade on Amos.

Humes

Surely we're also going to get a right back today?

Don't know anything about him, but in the simplest terms, if he's good enough to have played over 30 games in a season for Sunderland just a couple of years ago, he'll do for me.

Apparently Hursty tried to sign him pre season but couldn’t agree terms.

6 month deal, wonder if he's here purely to put himself in the shop window or we have a clause in his contract for an extra year.

Shame we couldn't get a deal over the line for more than till end of the season sure it would of been players choice
Posted by: mariner91, February 1, 2024, 4:44pm; Reply: 15
It is a shame that it's only till the end of the season. But given our struggles at left back this season and the fact he's played a decent number of games in the division above and had the Cowleys willing to splash £200k on him in the past, I'm sure he's a much welcomed upgrade. Even if short term.

Probably doesn’t want to commit for a longer term with a very slim chance that we may not be in this division next season, I don’t think we will but then again it’s not me who’s signing a contract. UTM

The 6 month contract is probably the only reason we got him, I’ve no real problem with that because we need good players right now. No doubt the club will be slated in the summer if we don’t retain him but we almost certainly wouldn’t get him without it.

We have too many problems to solve right now. I'd take deferring the left back problem to the summer if it helps right now.

If he helps ensure we stay up I'll take it.

My Sunderland season ticket holder mate:

"I mean if you like LWB’s with the heart of a pea, afraid to head the ball but are slightly quick and decent on the overlap he’ll be ok but he is not very good defensively"

So basically it sounds like we've signed a clone of Glennon with a bit of a pace upgrade, so I guess i'll chalk it up as an improvement.

I have no issues with the length of his deal, it shows we are willing to help the player achieve his aims to play higher level and put himself back in the shop window, similar to Emmanuel.  You never know, he might signed again EOS (to repay faith etc) or he might sign for a club in LG1 or Championship.  Great signing for LG2.

Biggest thing that stands out for me is the pace thing, we have none of it in the back 4. Both sides we are very slow and makes us easy to play against.

I’m disappointed- I was hoping it was Columbia international Andres Colorado…

If he's good on the overlap, he's going to be a bit disappointed to see Eisa cut inside and smack a shot at the goal again and again...

I’d be happy if he can at least see Eisa, instead of an opposition full-back with Abo hiding in his shadow…

Not sure Eisa will be a regular if Arthur can get and stay fit as think he will start on the right with Vernam on the left, will this signing see Glennon play further forward or not at all?

I can't see Glennon playing in midfield. The chronic lack of pace would be just as much of a liability there as it sometimes is in defence.

Assuming Hume replaces Glennon, does this mean that he is going to be taking all the set pieces now?

Another tidbit from my Sunderland ST holder colleague:

Quoted Text
Seemed an excellent prospect and was comfortably L1 standard (first choice lb for us and then Portsmouth), but was very injury prone!

I really liked him to be honest, started 3rd choice in our first league 1 season (behind Oviedo) and he became first choice by the end of the season. Very attacking and pacey, but then injury's hit and he ran down his contract to sign for Portsmouth on a free (we offered him a new one though)

I know injuries have been an issue since, so it's how much they have affected him now I guess

Ultimately, like one of those episodes of “A place in the Sun” where some couple named Brenda and Keith want to buy a four bedroom beachfront villa with a private pool in Cap Ferrat for £95k, there were always going to have to be concessions made, and injury proneness seems to be the theme we’ve got for.

Given where we are, there’s risk with every option open to us. Personally, I’m a lot more comfortable with this than going down the route of fresh but unproven youngsters. A couple more signings in a similar vein to Hume and Thompson and I’ll feel a lot better about things than I did 24 hours ago.

At least he moves about whereas Andrew just stands hiding behind a player from the opposition so he doesn’t have to take a pass from our defence!

Hopefully we have someone coming in to improve matters all round.

He is certainly better going forward than defending. But the main issue with him is his horrific injury record which blighted his time at The SOL and prevented him from ever getting a chance to show his merits and defects at Fratton Park.
If he can stay fit for the next three months and Mr Artell gets the best out of him he could be a very good addition.

Probably for the best we’ve only got him on a six month contract ^^

The contract thing - I assume we're just taking over the rest of his contract and doing it like this means we're not using a loan space?

If he's anything on Embleton or the other lad you sent us (the name escapes me  , left footed midfield player?) I will be happy .

My Sunderland season ticket holder, says good left back, but injury prone, if stays fit, he will good player, so we had to wait and see.

No disrespect to any players who are expected to perform these interviews but I find them utterly pointless, repetitive, slightly patronising and rather sad. They make a Fishy thread about 'data' seem fascinating by comparison.
