What bothers me is that we are going with the same defence that is leaking goals for fun.

Waterfall isn't even a sub today so here's hoping DA has coached them in the last 14 days to not make stupid mistakes. He obviously has faith in them.

This is what happens when you fluff your chances against this team. flipping Clifton is absolutely male masturbation on the ball. We can't keep carrying him in midfield because he puts a lot of effort in, he's junk on the ball and has zero technical ability and should have put this match out of sight.

"Heeee's one of our ooowwwwwwnnnn!" "brains" Clifton will always be the first name on the team sheet, one of our own you know! That's the most important thing.
Posted by: Plankton, January 13, 2024, 3:54pm; Reply: 78
Clifton needs dropping, we can't let those chances go. He scores we're out of sight. He has a lot of desire but it doesn't match the technical ability required.
Posted by: mariner91, January 13, 2024, 3:54pm; Reply: 79
Mullarkey at fault for both. I accept it was a poor touch from Vernam but when the ball is not under our control and bouncing in front of our back four you don’t want your full back bombing on leaving a massive gap. For that very reason.

The second was an excellent cross but he did nothing to stop him or hold him up. He was actually having an okay game before then but 1 v 1 defending he is not very good.

Despite the score, I thought that was a great first half of football.
Wish we had a winger that could put those sort of crosses in. Rose would fill his boots. I’m not happy about the score but as a game of football, that was very good for this division.

Wonder who we'll replace him with. Apparently we paid a fee for a new defender who's not even fit enough to play yet. Though we gave Crock Vernam a 3-year deal after paying a fee so it's probably par for the course of decisions we make to get players in.

Very entertaining half. Can't accuse Artells football of being boring.

That said its the same old issues. Can't defend and can't control a game adequately enough to run out comfortable winners.
Posted by: Maringer, January 13, 2024, 4:00pm; Reply: 89
First a little unfortunate, I think, but no excuse for Mullarkey letting their winger trot in behind him for their second.

They are wide open at the back and we should have buried them already, but we'll rue the missed opportunities. So many chances when a simple cross into the middle would have led to a chance for us, but it has been fluffed.

I've enjoyed the half, however. Amusing to watch their No. 15 (who has a great touch) not know what he should be doing when we stand off him instead of trying to press. A real tactical battle but I fear our defensively-weak full-backs might cost us.

A half of a few missed opportunities really. Good chances for vernam and Clifton. Hitting the bar doesn’t help either.

Defensive frailties are what has become my bugbear with this team and not having a defender closing down the ball coming in for their second is criminal.

All that being said, what an amazing half of football

Contrast their crosses into the box compared to ours. Totally different quality.

It's not all doom and gloom though. We are showing good signs of progress in our play, but the defending is letting us down.

County dodgy at the back, but quality going forward.

Have the crosses been good or has the defending by us bad?

We’ve played some quality balls in, but, there always seems a notts county player getting to it. 3/13 (town) and 3/4 (notts) successful crosses probably says as much as does the 0 (town) and 17 (notts) clearances made

Agreed. hard to pick a MOTM.  Eisa maybe.  His tracking back has been better. That said about the defence, Malarky has been OK going forward and Maher's touch for the first goal got it back into the danger area

We got our first away win of the season and got a clean sheet in doing, we actually have an identity about us in the way we want to play. It's far from perfect right now but he's been in charge 5 weeks with a squad he didn't build. The defense is a huge issue but to say you can't see it working when we're much more fluid going forward and the way we break teams down is a bit naive.

One of those players who didn't really do much in the game - apart from curl some lovely crosses into our box. Some very poor defending from those crosses and the usually reliable Cartwright made a complete balls up of one of them as well.

At the other end, in similar or even better positions, we kept hitting the defender or putting it too close to the keeper. The match stats are a bit misleading because they don't show just how many gilt-edged chances we fluffed, scuffing a shot or a cross instead of just rolling it to an unmarked player for an easy chance.

I bet Artell is really frustrated not to win that one.

I am even more peeved that I was last night.

I was really looking forward to the game today against Notts County - a 'proper' game unlike Sutton, Crawley etc.

However when I went to book a train ticket last night I found there are no trains from Kings Cross to Peterborough.

I thought I could drive to Peterborough (over two hours) and get a train from there. But then found part of the journey to Doncaster would be on a bus to Granthan - grrr! I do not fancy driving all the way to Cleethorpes or Doncaster so I was at home.

With the game finishing so late I would have been in two minds whether to miss the 5.24 train back to Surrey or watch the last 10 minutes. If I had missed the train I would not have been home until 22.30. As I was not able to get there I did not have to make that decision.

What a game to miss.

Looking forward to the Tranmere game, LNER and TransPennine Express permitting

We said the same about our crossing...particularly Mullarkey who did some good stuff to get in position to cross but then it petered out.
Eisa could have had four or five BUT at least we are creating the chances.

I remain very unimpressed with Glennon's set pieces, it must be said. I know we're not the biggest team, but they were smaller and we didn't really the threaten from any of them.

I suspect Wood will be the one who takes them on when he gets into the team.

Build from the back, free flowing attacking football. Artell has been here 5 weeks and we can carve teams open and create chances for fun. We used to bemoan the lack of entertainment and that we couldn't create chances, now we can. It's now Artells job to fix the other end. Like you said, Salford are shite and we beat them 3-0, FGR and Sutton are even worse. We won't go down. This season is about implementing a philosophy and a style at the club for him to work on. He's signed his first 3 players yesterday, one of them stuck a worldie in the top corner to rescue us a point today. We've had two different styles this season and the defence has been useless playing both... If they can't adapt, they'll be out the door either this month or the summer and he'll have replacements in. Judge him in 12 months, not after 5 weeks, which btw there's been a lot more positive than negative.

These comments you've made a few times about him rubbing his head during interviews is really coming across quite weird.

So what if he rubs his head while he's being filmed doing an interview? Seems a bit of an unnecessary personal jibe.

Who cares if Artell is not 100% confident infront of the camera and has some nervous mannerisms,  I couldn't care less. I just want him to succeed.

What I am more concerned with; can DA continue to play expansive attacking football as well as making us more formidable at the back ? - and if he can't? -  Is he willing to compromise ??

I was very entertained today. We played some great stuff, as did notts. 2 good football teams that are woeful at the back.

Very pleased for wood.

Unbelievable game of football, could have gone either way.

Are you not entertained?

A point against a team in the play offs is certainly something to be happy about in our current predicament.

Well there were four of us walking away from the ground and everyone of us were just thrilled to have been lucky endotoxins have witnessed one of the most enjoyable games of football at BP for many a year. Straight from the game me and the lad went to watch “ All town are we” and the parallels with the Wrexham game were quickly very apparent and whilst we should have won sometimes football is to be enjoyed and today was one of those days with the referee excellent in allowing the game to flow.

I accept defensively we again had problems but let’s not forget that in Jones, McGoldrick and Bostwick they have three of the most gifted footballers playing in L2 this season. Jones was excellent in the game at County and the same today a bloody nightmare and the quality of his crosses were just those of a player from a higher level. We must strengthen our defence, thought Efete should have definitely come on after their third, but if we attack like that and just add a bit more quality to our crossing and finishing we will be winning sufficient games to get away from the relegation zone.

Anyone solely blaming Mullarkey today has never played footy .Especially at right or left back .Sometimes wide players are so could it's difficult to stop them getting the cross in .When that happens you either have to double up and try to stop the cross or deal with it when it comes in .Today we did neither .But it was collective failure rather than one .Sometimes a player is just better than you

It’s really difficult to stop them getting crosses in if you never actually attempt to close them down. Or if you stupidly run forward for no reason leaving a massive gap to exploit

Problem with Mullarkey though is that it happens every week. It’s not the odd game where he lets the side down, it’s actually the norm.

I do think there was a lot of misfortune for the first goal (though Mullarkey should have been more circumspect with his run), but no excuse for the second where he let the winger run in behind him so he had absolutely no chance of stopping the cross when he received the ball. Rank bad defending, that one.

I know we're not the biggest team, but they were smaller

Just to say they weren't smaller, they had at least 6 players bigger than ours. I sit in the main stand and always notice when the two teams line up pre-kick-off that nearly every team has bigger players - not just taller but in overall physique as well.

These comments you've made a few times about him rubbing his head during interviews is really coming across quite weird.

So what if he rubs his head while he's being filmed doing an interview? Seems a bit of an unnecessary personal jibe.

Also today, never rubbed his head once, only once rubbed his nose, but as the above poster said, so what!

Norseman would agree with you however every winger is better than our full backs we never stop the crosses coming in.

Mullarkey is a liability, ok if a one off but it happens week in week out.

We all love to see a good fast winger. Unless he playes for the other side.. Then we have crap full backs    :-/

Fine lines in football..

Finish that chance to go 3 up instead of hitting the bar and I think that was the game. Huge moment. At the time Town warranted that 3-0 lead, had given Notts C a sniff, we’re winning the battles all over the pitch and doubt anyone would’ve argued Town were playing very, very well.

Of course then the game changes with conceding, and we know the fragility in our lads at the minute - plus the quality offensively of Notts C, and the effort/energy we were putting in is hard to sustain. Going in level at h/t absolutely  gutting for us, the opposite for them. Tbh I feared we’d get put away second half..but credit to our lads for digging in, not rolling over and getting back in front. Very strange game, too and fro’s, some very good players on show, good offensive play mixed with comical/diabolical defending. Both sides. When we went 5-4 down I think most would’ve thought that was that. And a defeat would’ve been hard to take, don’t think we deserved to lose - and a brilliant 1st touch from Wood got us a point. Both sides would’ve felt both sides of the story..could’ve/would’ve/should’ve won….would’ve/could’ve lost.

If you were there as a neutral it would’ve been a fantastic game to have watched..if you were a supporter of either side it highlighted both strengths and weaknesses already know.

Personally I think we should view it as a step forward, some promise, and given In sure a tremendously difficult week for everyone in and around the club - it was a great effort collectively, and a fitting tribute.

Speaking of..what a fantastic tribute ..by both sets of fans it should be said..👏
