Apparently he was in the background of a training ground video which Mullarkey posted on social media and then deleted. Seems well regarded at Hull and at Shelbourne where he was on loan.

He plays just in behind the striker, 2 goals and 7 assists in 14 games for Shelbourne earlier in the season. Can also play centre midfield. Looks like a good signing in a position we've been crying out for.

Hull have a striker called Will Jarvis who was at Shelbourne with Wood. Wonder if there's any chance both might come?

Little bit on Wood here -

Hopefully someone who can shield Hunt to produce forward passes with more confidence !

Couple of goals would be nice to see as well !!.

Any sign of defensive loans yet?

bit of height in there is a bonus, we’ve always been quite small in central midfield and noticeably a lot less of a threat from set pieces this year.

Hmmm. We'll have to see.

I can remember players who were 6'1" but were so rubbish in the air that they might as well have been 1'6".

Don't disagree we are a little short as a team in general, especially considering how flipping big the current generation of players tend to be.

Doesn' t matter what height, size, or build of players we face.

A higher speed, more accurate passing regime, with our players running to receive the next pass will outplay the bruisers who have to resort to pushes and fouls.

Our current style makes me wonder what has changed from the play off games, where most of the players ran for 120 minutes, unlike this season, where the rechargeable batteries are breaking down early in 2nd halves ???

Have we signed non 90 minute players with potentially more skill, but less physical energy.

Notable drops in 90 minutes of chasing, harrying, and running this season are Gav and Harry, who both haven't had dominant games, hence neither have hit goals to the same levels?

2 important players who have both dropped in form, thus weakening the midfield areas. Get both fit and strong and then the centre of the field won't be as exposed to unopposed forwards waltzing into shooting areas unchallenged !

Huge gap in our squad of someone who is effective in that No 10/top of midfield role, has been the case since McAtee's first season really (until paired with George Lloyd he didn't have the opportunity to play that role again).

Hopefully the lad can help fix that hole as we just don't stretch play anywhere near enough.

We was told Jon Nolan was crap, we was told John Mcatee was crap, we was told Craig Disley was past it. Look at the countless number of players that have left here we thought were crap and gone on to be good players elsewhere. Football is very opinion based and let’s not write him off before he’s even kicked a ball. Hull fans say he’s a very good player so i’m optimistic.

Footballers tend to be better players at 21 than they were at 19. It's why it is so unusual for teenagers to succeed at a young age in the professional game.

As stated we had Jay Matete in the side that went down and he was the best midfielder in L1 last season. Terry Taylor was also in that side and he's now one of the best midfielders in L1 but no you're right, signing experienced players like Danny Rose, Filipe Morais and Stefan Payne worked so well last time  ;D

Look, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to not be overwhelmed by the prospect of a 21-year old loanee whose main football league experience to date came in that retched Scunthorpe side of a couple of years ago. I get it, on the spectrum of signings that would be instantaneously exciting, it’s fairly low down on the scale, but as others have pointed already, so were Jon Nolan, Jay Matete and John McAtee.

Of course, those examples don’t offer a cast-iron guarantee that the lad will be a success here, but they do underline how foolish it is to reach strong, impassioned opinions before the player has kicked a ball (or in this case, before his signing has even been announced).

Likewise, let’s not pretend that there aren’t positives to be drawn from Wood’s embryonic career to date. He made his professional debut for Hull a week after turning 19, and has been on the periphery of a Championship side having a good tilt at promotion for the Premier League this season, and who have just signed a Champions League player in his position of choice. He’s no Touray Sisay; he has a pedigree and CV to suggest he’s at least worth giving a chance before leaping to conclusions.

Wasn't that the team that were playing 16 year olds all over the place and a 15 year old in goals, losing  5, 6 ,7's and even 8 on the last day of the season ?

It was a basket case and hardly chance to give a fair judgement on individual loan players .

He sounds a good player from Hull regulars so that will do for  me we know by now loans are hit and miss we just need him to be one of the good one's .

Can I just raise the bar a bit on McAtee, Nolan, even Disley?  All great examples of why not to write players off too soon, but here's two that have literally paved the path for Wood to follow across the Humber Bridge.

Conor Townsend. Signed for Town on loan aged 18 with no first team experience at all.  At every single point in the 13 seasons since he was first here, I would have had him back in a heartbeat.

Andy Smith, first signed for Town on aged 20 with experiencing consisting of 4 games in the Checkatrade Trophy, a single FA Cup game and a sub appearance in the League Cup.  He turned out pretty ok too.

I believe you might be the right peg of a certain Clive Mendonca. Occasionally seen on Twitter spouting "cloud cuckoo land" as their phrase of choice.

I'm not going to slate the signing, that would be unfair. Ultimately, Artell and his signings will be judged on how the team performs going forward. All I will say is that we can't allow ourselves to get dragged into the relegation scrap under any circumstances.

Think it’s the wisest approach as players can be good for one club and crap for another and visa versa. Best time to judge is once they’ve played five or six games and let’s face it a number of our signings looked very good in the first few weeks of the season now people are panicking that the same group will get us relegated.

It's hard to show your level when you are surrounded by crap.  A player can pass too short or long and it looks like you are off the ball.  The best Sunday league game I ever played was when we had an ex semi pro play a ringer for us. Having his quality made me raise my game.

Irish mate who follows Shamrock rates Wood.

Exactly. a simple exmple you could have the vision to lob a ball into some space. if the guy you intend it for isn't on your wavelength he wont get it and its a poor pass. if he has the nous to run onto it and rounds the keeper it was a great through ball. you either look look a chump or a champ and you did nothing different on each occasion

John Oster 02/03 the remains the best example of this. Was still fantastic for us, but (with the brief exception of Steve Kabba) so far ahead of his teammates in terms of ability and vision that this kind of thing happened with some frequency.

Be interesting to see if Artell adopts that Hurst tactic of signing a player and then waiting until three minutes before handing his team-sheet in to have them announced.  Always at least one every season under Hurst, think it was Gnahoua this year.

Announcing, actually being signed and being registered are three completely different things. The last two are linked and most important, but Luke Spokes spent 2 years here without ever being formally announced.

It seems that the club have decided to enter into a period of mourning with their media output, which we have to respect and I think they should be commended for.

Be interesting to see if Artell adopts that Hurst tactic of signing a player and then waiting until three minutes before handing his team-sheet in to have them announced.  Always at least one every season under Hurst, think it was Gnahoua this year.

Ainley was another. Callum Jones a couple of years ago, can’t remember any last season.

Mikey O'Neill away at Swindon last season. First I knew about it was when I saw him in a Town shirt on the pitch!

Didn't Mikey O Neill sign on the day of the game vs Swindon?

Yeah, you’re quite right. He was announced via the team sheet more or less.

Do forgive me for forgetting about Mikey O’Neill, though.

Why don't you take up DA on his offer for anyone to visit Cheapside to question him about our relegation prospects?

He's said it twice now.

Might take him up on it myself.

To be honest with you Ginny, I like what I hear from Artell in general. I think he gives good, honest interviews and is an open book. Maybe a bit too open at times as I wasn't comfortable with his assertion that we definitely won't get relegated. I'm all for us playing attractive football going forward, and hopefully the business that we do this month allows us to move towards that more consistently so that we can push on in the summer and not be having discussions like this again in 12 months time.

I will only judge Artell on whether he keeps us up this season which he is accountable for , then if he does that walk the walk next season ; as in top 10 minimum which should be a relatively achievable if the league empties out of many big spenders .

We need substance over style in the short term , if he can get a mixture of both that equates to us staying up then great ; if it sacrifices our league status then obviously we have to revert to whatever keeps us up , hopefully he recognises this .

We have heard managers talk the talk many times in the past and ultimately it doesn't matter what they say (we have a list of our own who had nice interview styles )  but what he get's out of the players is key  I'm very much on the fence either way as surely most with a more balanced view must be with such a short spell in charge so far.

We need to get to 40 odd points asap and then hopefully Artell can create the team he wants .

"I wasn't comfortable with his assertion that we definitely won't get relegated"  Would you be more comfortable if he said "we got a good chance of going down"??? Maybe he believes we are staying up, I do.

"not be having discussions like this again in 12 months time"   Discussions are endless.   -Trigger Warning- When we do stay up, the next moan, sorry, discussion, will be that our style doesn't entertain us.

Football is a drug, you want the next fix, and if your dreams are fulfilled and you get promoted, you want the next promotion and in "style" this time. Never ending.
Hell, You can even Over Dose as in 2026 WC there will be 48 teams, playing 102 matches over 39 days.

We are not getting relegated, and next season we will do much better.  UTM

Artell's first two seasons with Crewe he finished 15th, then 12th and in his third season 2nd (on average points due to covid but i believe they were 1st at the time it ended?)

We MAY have to wait a while to achieve this top ten spot that a lot of people want at the least, but it doesnt necessarily mean we won't be on the right track...

I do think people read far too much into all comments made in interviews too tbh. People are uncomfortable with Artell's belief that we won't get relegated, whilst at the same time others are moaning on Twitter because Gav Holohan admitted that it'll be a tough test against Notts county.

Can't please everyone!

On paper, next season's League Two does look like it has the potential to be considerably easier, or at least less minted than this, assuming we can stay in it. Three or four of Stockport, Wrexham, Mansfield, Notts County and MK Dons going up would be a good start, and provided Reading continue to pull away from danger following their points deduction, those coming down from League One look likely to be fairly traditional bottom-tier types. I assume Fleetwood are now in all kinds of trouble after their owner was jailed.

Salford and Forest Green both going down would be handy too, though I suspect only on will; probably Forest Green under thick as mince Troy Deeney.

The annual Chesterfield implosion in the National League looks highly unlikely this season; they'll walk it from here, so that's something to take into account. Whoever comes up with them will be significantly less well heeled, mind.

Ultimately, if we can get out shít together enough to avoid a third non-league relegation, there should be no room for excuses next season.

I agree with that but it is still quite a jump from where we are now to the top 10. Actually saying that it actually isn't Haha.

I don't think we will go down for 1 minute. Next season, really hard to say. I reckon somewhere between 5th and 16th. Not very bold I know. Still think we do have potential in this squad and Artell seems like a winner to me.

I understand what you're saying, but it seems clear that part of the task the ExtraSpecialOne has is to liberate the thinking of the team so the players can perform without fear on the pitch.

I took the quote in that context - rather than an attempt to reassure the fanbase.

FWIW I agree with him.

You have hit the nail on the head, Mappers. Reach a more comfortable points tally and then experiment. The mental fragility of the squad needs addressing, and risking getting hammered every week isn't going to help that. If Waterfall took down his man for the Walsall first, I think we would have seen that game out.

Well, It might (or definitely)  be the fact that DA definitely believes that we are not going down. Do you want him to lie so that jamesgtfc is comfortable?

Plenty on here said that Neil Woods wouldn't take us down in 2012, and also many who said Paul Hurst wouldn't take us down in 2021 and they turned out to look really stupid.

What relevance does this have to here and now? I don't see what point you're trying to make.

Offering an opinion - which may or may not turn out to be wrong - is what a football forum is all about.

Chris Sutton knows more about football than most on here. Check out how many of his result predictions for the BBC are correct on average.

Time has clouded your mind there - who on earth thought we’d stay up when Woods went 25 games without a win?!! We ALL knew we were going down that year.

Whether Artell says we’ll definitely stay up or that we’re in a relegation battle is irrelevant to me.

If we go down he looks no better having said there was a threat of relegation or guaranteed to stay up - we’ve still gone down & that’s all that’ll matter.  Exactly the same if we stay up (by the skin of our teeth or comfortably), you remember that, not some interview in December.

However, for the mindset of the players when he came in, low on confidence & in need of a boost - of course he’s going to say something like “we won’t go down with this group”

Did you take Artell up on the offer of a visit to Cheapside? I would love to know what is going on Monday - Friday.

This is quickly turning into a disaster.
