Lincs cup Tuesday at 19.45 away at Spalding .

Anyone going?

What team will we put out?
Posted by: Wyberway, December 18, 2023, 6:14pm; Reply: 1
Busy time of the year with lots of fixtures, so I would have thought the youth team (maybe the young pro’s) will play. Doubt Artell will even bother. Did Hurst manage the game last year?

Been told sending a strong team most of the lads that not been playing so might go to this

I bought tickets for Taunton v Torquay for the original fixtures last month which is tomorrow night so I'll be walking down to watch that. Torquay sold out away end of 860 should make for an interesting atmosphere

Anyone needing 90 minutes or some time on the pitch after injuries.

Those not in the main current 18, plus a couple of 2nd years for experience.

Don't risk Cartwright !

Is Amos fit yet, or can Michee slot across?

I hope that Khouri can get some time in now he's training again.

Fitness more important than winning for me, unless it means more players get fitness matches to give Artell some choices !

Good chance for people like Eastwood Efete Waterfall Amos Khouri, Braithwaite Bramwell Gardner Vernam to get a few minutes*

*eligibility and fitness dependant

Whereas Hurst didnt really give two hoots about these tinpot cups, Artell may have a completely different outlook, especially this early in his tenure. He is looking to add more fitness and tactics and something like this could be a useful tool for him and his players.

I think expect a pretty strong team

Spaulding second in their league
Won 7, drawn none, lost 1 is a good home record
We shouldn’t just stroll up and expect to win.
We need to approach the game with professionalism

At minimum you'd expect the out of favour players to be putting a proper shift in if they want to impress the new manager. Very sad they can't even muster that and are instead conceding three and losing against a team of semi-pros from three steps below. Deeply underwhelming stuff.

A chance to shine and they blew it. Probably explains why they were picked for a meaningless cup tie.

Wouldn't shock me to see a few of them depart in the Jan window. Amos and Waterfall just aren't up to the standard required anymore.

4 levels down. They play in the NPL Midlands Division:

National League (24 Teams)
National League North & South (48 Teams)
Isthmian League, Northern Premier, Southern Premier Central, Southern Premier South (88 Teams)

Spalding then sit below the Northern Premier in the Northern Premier Midlands. Cleethorpes, Grimsby Borough and North Ferriby play at that level on the Northern Premier East. There is also a Northern Premier West. The Isthmian League also has 3 divisions feeding into it and the Southern Premier has two divisions feeding into it, so there are about 176 teams at that level.

Typical all or nothing reaction though I do agree a few of the players are likely to leave next month.

Just baffling how if we win 3-0 on Saturday we will be expected playoffs by many. Lose by the same score and it will all be about being slightly better than the bottom two, hopefully.

We have a decent squad and should be looking up rather than down. We were/are never going to be relegated this season.

Personally I'm not fussed but that looked a fairly strong Town starting line up and to lose you have to question there attitude and ability? As above quite a few of them need to be shipped out as not upto league 2 football.

Just read the Match Report.  Goodness knows why the OS describes that selection as a 'strong Mariners team'.
It was a team of bench warmers and young hopefuls who will never have started a match together before.

We were playing days before a busy Xmas/ New Year, on a non league pitch with no away following and trying not to get in the way of agricultural defenders.

Judging by the report, Khouri, as ever, gave it everything and was targeted by their players. If he is injured again it speaks to the nonsense of these risky ventures.

That said, two of their goals came from crosses poorly dealt with apparently. The game will have offered useful defensive coaching points and a chance for Artell to make some difficult decisions pre window.

Looking forward to some highlights.

Was at the game and would have to say that we looked miles better when all the kids came on with 15 minutes to go. If the game had been 5 minutes longer, we would have won.

Doesn't matter who you are playing and to what standard, professionalism
means that you do your best to win.
Failing that your in the wrong profession

Nobody is actually performing a 'feeding frenzy' though and I don't understand why so often there's such a rush by some to mischaracterise discussion of results and performances on a message board set up to discuss results and performances in this manner. Pretty much every reaction i've seen has been very level headed and essentially just said this was an opportunity for the players on the fringes of the first team to stake a claim for a more prominent role in the squad against a much lower ranked opponent, which many of them have disappointingly squandered (although from the sounds of things some of the younger players performed well, which is obviously encouraging). Nobody from what i've seen is particularly arsed about being knocked out of the Lincolnshire Senior Cup.

People are overreacting. Has about as much significance as a pre-season friendly and was surely just an exercise in getting some minutes into the legs of players on the fringe.

Every thing I've heard from DA would suggest he picked a team that would win that game last night. The likes of Waterfall, Khan, Green, Amos and Ainley had a chance to stake a claim and didn't take it. I'm certainly not arsed about the Lincs Cup - I described it as meaningless above.

Except it doesn't, new manager in place and very little opportunity for these players to play there way into the team. Won't play against an opposition of that level again all season and these players should of been playing to try and get into the team. At least that'd be my attitude if I was selected, i'd be covering every blade of grass to try and get my way back into the team. It's not harsh to say that certain players aren't up to the standard we're wanting anymore. Amos is a good NL full back but even then he wasn't exactly setting the world alight, only got an extension due to a clause in his contract I may add and Waterfall is just too old now. Efete had a good game and showed Artell what he can offer to him after falling himself out the team. Gav at Newport showed the attitude required to get yourself back into the team. Show a bit of desire to do something and change a game... Certain players just aren't good enough anymore or don't have the attitude required to be here under DA.

Ok, at least 7 of the starting line up have played for the first team this season , so one would have expected they had enough to see off Spalding. But we had three players coming back from injury so probably not fully match fit.

On a positive note it’s good to see Khouri starting. Once he is match fit he will be a good addition to the squad. Be very interesting to see him progress under DA.

I'm not saying it wasn't an opportunity for some players but the way some are banging on is a bit OTT. Someone mentioned that it was a dark day for the club earlier in the thread! I'd like to think that was tongue in cheek but I'm not so sure. All I'm saying is that there were plenty of players in the side that were miles off match fitness and getting everyone through that unscathed and more prepared for a busy festive schedule was more important than the result. Other than Waterfall playing the full match against Sutton, the back four and keeper from last night haven't played at all in the last six weeks or so. Four players in the lineup hadn't kicked a ball for the men's team all season.  Everyone's welcome to their opinion of course, but I sure as hell won't be losing any sleep over losing to Spalding in the Lincs Cup.

Fair play for going though mate, that's some effort that.

The problem was that Spalding were tackling, and the Town players did not like it. Spalding were playing one/two touch football and playing the ball upfield (not passing) which created a lot of 50/50 balls that I am afraid the Town players did not seem to want to win. Eastwood was poor and looked like he did not want to be there.
Referee was poor, but we can not blame him for not wining.

All over a poor performance from Town.

No one will start on Saturday that played last night, some of them do not even deserve to be in the matchday squad.

GTFC man of the match : Efete

Can see in those highlights a few occasions where the Town lads held back a bit in the tackles. Green, very surprisingly,  a couple of times and then Andrews leading up to the penalty that Amos gave away for their third.

I kinda get it.  No-one wants to be getting injured in what is effectively a meaningless game but as many others have said, a missed opportunity for a fair few to play their way into the starting plans.  A risky approach when January is coming and the club have said, be it the truth or not, that it'll have to be a case of players going out to bring anyone in.

Having now seen the match highlights (twice)  I can only conclude that certain posters were not at the match. I saw plenty of commitment from our players but it was very obvious that they were not up to speed having not been part of the first team for some time. To say they were poor is unfair especially as the match ended in a draw - which flattered Spalding . The fact remains that we lost on penalties, not on match play. Our keeper should have done a lot better for the first two Spalding goals and the penalty awarded to them was highly disputable in my eyes. Unfortunately, deciding a match on a penalty shoot out is just a lottery and just highlighted how our goalie had a very bad night - not the whole team.

The SPALDING match highlights failed to show any of there agression and crunch tackling which resulted in the Town players backing off or reluctant to take them on. It only showed what Spalding wanted to show.

And YES I was there, and I stick to my previous comments.
