Whichever way you look at today's game it's a 6 pointer. We need to win this to put some pints between us and the bottom of the league.

IF results went for us today, we could potentially jump up to about 16th, which would then put us within 3 points of the top half of the table. Everything to play for boys

If we don’t win today it would mean we had failed to beat the bottom two, a sign that we are in dire trouble.

However, I think we will win today and comfortably. It’s a shame that Danny Rose is suspended, but I think that with Pike and Wilson we have more than enough firepower to see off Sutton.

Not sure what agreement you mean, but the team that wins the toss gets to choose ends or to kick off.

That is wrong, the team that wins the toss can choose which way to play, OR  choose to kick off.

Holohan is having a total mare and that's junk from Cartwright. Should have been a simple save but he's wrongly anticipated the shot going to his right and fallen out of the way. If our central three midfielders could string a few passes together we'd be slaughtering these.

Sutton deserve to be level and are very much in this game.

Could go either way and we need to up it second half. Looking creaky at the back again.

Not entirely sure you can pin that goal on the defence or their coaching. Holohan's given the ball away in midfield when we'd already committed players forward, and then although it's put us on the back foot the defenders have limited Smith to an effort from distance which should have been a comfortable save. Like many of our goals conceded this season it's come from individual mistakes and giving the ball away in dangerous areas when most of the rest of the team are further up the pitch.

Posted by: ginnywings, November 25, 2023, 4:04pm; Reply: 50
Holohan has been shocking. Failing with passes that I think I could still make, even at my ripe age.

We just look so indecisive at the back and never look capable of keeping a clean sheet against anybody.

There won’t be any hiding places tonight. We’re in trouble and we are playing the bottom team at home. They have 1 point away from home all season and no win since February.  We need to win. As usual, there are 5 or 6 players who need to raise their standards significantly.

What a ridiculous comment.

Do you really think writing a little article for a newspaper has delayed the process of appointing a new manager?

Do you think it was a choice one day of, do I go out and interview some potential managers or shall I write this article instead? And even if it was, do you honestly think he'd delay recruiting a manager to do that?

Really disappointing. We are lucky that it has not damaged us as much as it could have done in terms of other results. The lower half of the division is poor and the top half is much, much better. No team just above us is pulling away and a couple of wins on the bounce would improve our position quite a bit, I would imagine.
They need to get a new manager in quickly while this situation is the case. If we contimue to throw away points then we will be marooned at the bottom and staring the dreaded Conference in the face yet again. I agree it is time for ACTION. We read that there are lots of ‘quality’ guys interested in the position of GTFC manager. So, why the hold up?

Precisely this, shame on the cranks that have come in and treat this club like a left wing vanity project, B-Corp, Diversity and wooing the Guardianistas meanwhile expecting the paying public to keep turning up to watch a turgid squad that has been assembled under their stewardship.

I think come January JS & AP will have to dig into their pockets. Players with 3-year contracts won't be keen on moving, and neither will those on 2 year deals, unless they get the same wages (or more  ;D ;D ;D). Te new manager will have to put his foot on the gas from day1 and hit the club running.

With respect it opens a window into JS's thinking process. I'm sure Polani Paradox helps him be an entrepreneur in the dating business, I'm not sure how it helped him in keeping an eye on PH on how he recruited players for this season. If you believe in just Data-Driven Recruitment, then we have what we had on show just now.
I actually thought that the team was OK, and just needed better guidance and a plan for every team we encountered. I think now the problem is much deeper than I first thought. The team are basically mis-fits that, whilst good players in their own right, cannot play together as a team. They would fit in as individuals in other teams, but not all in the same team.
Take Clifton as an example. Up and coming lad, with a great future ahead and yet struggling in this team.
We are so lucky we have some buffer points and not in the drop position. The new guy has some work on his plate.

Precisely this, shame on the cranks that have come in and treat this club like a left wing vanity project, B-Corp, Diversity and wooing the Guardianistas meanwhile expecting the paying public to keep turning up to watch a turgid squad that has been assembled under their stewardship.

But there will be hell to pay should anyone call them out on Social Media.

intercourse me your name really is accurate, embarrassing conclusion. If they were happy watching that they wouldn't of sacked a manager... that costs them money btw.

We were crying out for someone to come on and pass the ball at pace so our more mobile forward line could make some runs. Instead we got Harry.

The amount of people that get personal because my name is Richard, baffling.

Where did I say they were happy watching that ? The squad is shite, there is no money for any new manager, they blown their load on a left wing vanity project.

We haven't spent the whole budget, you can't do that in L2. You submit a budget at the start of the season which you are happy with, you can then add to that budget at any point as long as you stay within SMCP Calculation. You can lose as much as you like in transfer fees. We are quite a way under our SMCP calculation meaning there is significant movement in the budget for any new manager coming in.

Do I need to point out that it wasn't JS and AP who signed these players?

They have removed the guy who did sign them but couldn't get a tune out of them, so let's wait and see what a new manager can do with them and some January additions before we have them burnt at the stake. Their politics isn't relevant at all.

It was only a few weeks ago that Pyke was labelled as useless, and he's been one of our better players under the temporary management team.

Apparently, Steve Morison has turned Grimby down today.                 https://insidefutbol.com/2023/11/25/former-cardiff-city-boss-turns-down-grimsby-town-job/627351/

It could be very expensive if we get relegated, so they better hope they pick the right guy who can do something with this squad.

I don't personally think the squad is that bad, but we definitely need some signings. CB, and possibly CM as a minimum. Not doing so, would leave a very elaborate icing structure without the cake supporting it.

I bet a lot of teams would love an additional 450k to their playing budget.
And i bet they would be higher than us in the league.

Smith’s goal took a deflection off Waterfall. That was why Cartwright was wrong-footed.

Understandably, Glennon’s been told to get forward to use his attacking attributes.

Mullarkey has surely been told to play narrower when Glennon is forward. Our midfield has surely been told to cover for Glennon when he is up the pitch.

Why on earth then has Holohan just stood around after his header and let players run past him, Mullarkey has remained too wide, Maher gets drawn out as usual because our midfield is having an existential crisis, and somehow, a 2m lamppost is allowed time and space to shuffle forward to equalise.

It’s the same mistakes again. What is wrong with them?

Looks like it might have done. Holohan heads the ball backwards then stands and watches as the goal unfolds. Looks even worse on a second watch.

I thought it took a deflection.

But now I’m not too sure.

I don’t know if Waterfall gets close enough to actually touch it.

It’s a weird one because Cartwright’s movement suggests it took a deflection. But if you pause it when Smith takes the shot it looks like the ball is going towards the centre rather than to Cartwright’s right.

I don’t know now. Needs a snickometer.

When you watch Holohan he’s looking a bit lazy passes the ball (often sloppy) and then either stands still or starts walking.

When we’ve not got the ball his work ethic looks light, maybe the data thingy in his vest is proving me wrong but generally good midfield players keep moving with or without the ball.

I’ll get slaughtered for the above as I know he’s popular with a lot of the supporters. Again won’t be popular but if one has to go out for one to come in I think he’d be a consideration.

We all appreciate Gav but yesterday he seemed to spend most of the match with his hand up apologising to team mates, and even the crowd at one point. When he does make a mistake it really sets him back on his heels instead of trying to make amends.

I've rarely seen a player who is so up and down with his performances. He can have a really good influential game, be the main goal threat and then look like a competition winner in subsequent games.

I agree with you, it was a bad day for Gav. He was off most of the match for some reason and, to me, was to blame for the goal. There No9 was the man for Gav to mark, being nearest to him but he failed to track back with him, leaving him in open spaces. It's hard to tell from the vid if Waterfall deflect it or not, if he did you can excuse Cartwright, if it wasn't a deflection then it was poor goalkeeping.

It’s not a new thing though DB, to his credit he pops up with the odd goal, some again to his credit have been important ones as were “those” penalties in “that” game but he just doesn’t have the passing ability to play the role he was picked for yesterday.

Thought we played well in the first half ,Holoran had a poor game by his standards . Our goal came about through some good one touch football  but conceded a goal at the worst possible time .Onwards and upwards ,stick with the management team we have . If these two had started the season in charge with their present points per game ratio we would be in playoff contention.   U.T.M.

The goalkeeper copulated up here. Waterfall rightly showed him outside, and Cartwright from that distance should have had his near post. IMHO, even before that Holahan should have seen the space appear as the ball was attacked (by Maher?) and dropped into it. He kind of stopped running until it was too late and he bitched at Cartwright. Hurst usually said behind goals there was usually multiple mistakes, and that certainly was the case here.

Often, his body language sucks after he loses the ball. I've seen it multiple times this season, and it has cost us on multiple occassions. Some days he puts in a shift and works his balderdash off, but there is part of the temperament that is not good and when he's not on guard and doesn't catch himself, you often see that "ah intercourse it, not gonna make it anyway". It's painful because it's not like he's droppable, because we don't have much better options than him on the bench. With the state of our defence right now, we need Green and Clifton deep as cover, you'd probably want Conteh further forward, but we'll certainly need Holahan in rotation and to change matches. I'm one of the few who'd go with Clifton over Holahan, because he does not give up running and we really need that off the ball right now until the morale improves and standards have been set. Players have to know that if you give up running, or don't give your all, you'll be off the pitch and not starting.

I think one problem we have at the moment, is when someone isn't on it, we can do very little about it, and if you cannot punish that sort of behaviour, it keeps happening.

I've thought similarly watching him out of possession lately and yeah he certainly doesn't often quickly track back and reset his position when attacking moves break down. There have though been a number of occasions where we've gone on to quickly regain possession and his advanced position has been beneficial in the subsequent attack, so there is a trade off to his style of play. I can't say i'm a massive fan of it but I've held off on criticising him for it because I don't know if him remaining in those advanced positions is down to laziness or our tactics.

I think you have to earn your attacks. You defend as a team, and attack as a team. Some players justify being included solely for their attacking abilities. They are luxury players and they certainly help convert chances, but out of it and you're carrying them. IMHO if Holahan wants to be in the team, he's got to get the basic off the ball out of possession down first, then build on it with attacks if we earn it.

He’s a player who didn’t play his first game in the EFL until nearly 30 and is shortly to be 32 an age when midfielders start to run out of gas. His passing has always been inexplicably bad even when not under pressure. Short answer is we need better quality players if we are going to get anywhere. Same goes for at least half a dozen others who are in and out the side
Posted by: Maringer, November 26, 2023, 10:33pm; Reply: 153
After looking at the highlights, definitely no touch for their goal. It was just a bizarre piece of goalkeeping from Cartwright who thought the shot was going to his right, even though a shot in that direction would have had to go through Waterfall and there was a massive gap to his left. As others have mentioned, it was incredibly poor from Holohan as well. He just didn't even attempt to get back. Something odd going on with him yesterday as he was so terribly poor. Must have been about his worst performance for us. I'm normally happy enough to see him in the starting line-up as well.
