The youth team have been going really well this season, fo add to that a 3-0 win at Shrewsbury in the FA Youth Cup. Gareth Jennings was in attendance. Nice to see he’s a diehard like the rest of us 😆

Pretty sure we are sat top of the table, unbeaten and beat second placed Hartlepool 7-0 on the weekend… must be some real talents coming through. Cameron Gardner leading the way in the league for goals scored.

Neil n Callum have got a good strong group this season. Mate went to watch the 1st v 2nd game on Saturday,  and like you say, they won 7.0. Gardner scored a hat trick whilst Shakeel Brown on the wing also impressed.have won 6 on the bounce now

Just on the youth team you seasoned watchers how far are the better ones away from a chance in the first team squad would you say?

I'd have Cammy Gardner in and around the squad now, he's a real livewire and knows where the back of the net is. He reminds me of the lad Colchester had up front and caused us real problems.

Great stuff thanks for that. We're light on strikers so be great to see him on the bench

Interesting that Gareth Jennings posted this on Twitter. Kept a pretty low profile to this point and hasn't posted about other matches at any level that I've seen.

He lives over that way Rodders, was head of the youth set up at stoke for a few years.
God knows why he bothered going last night.according to the font of all knowledge that is Pen Penfras, hes just a free loading, couldn't give a toss consultant who just takes the money n offers nothing

the other person was in the dressing room before and after the game was Doig, so I'm told. Fair play to the man if true

It’s not impossible for someone to get fired but still remain in contact with previous employees.
It also keeps the contacts live which is important in the footballing network.

Another win at the weekend and another 4 goals! Must be some decent attacking players in our youth team. Anyone seen them this season?

Saw that as well, having a youth setup that is going so well will be a selling point for the new manager/head coach post.

It would be nice if we were kept up to date with our youth team. Maybe we're keeping quiet so we don't alert the big guns so they don't poach one or two

They'll be playing in the FA Youth Cup second round tomorrow against South Shields, me and a couple of mates are making our way down there. Should be a good test but one I think we should win. Up there should I say.

Dominated the first half, playing some very good stuff. The Mariners are leading The Mariners 2-0... We should really be 3/4 up with the South Shields keeper making a couple of good early saves. Cammy Gardner the stand out player and a very good thing we've tied him down to a pro deal.

So perhaps draw tomorrow? Still plenty of ties to be played over next two weeks though...

Gardner , Khouri , Giles and Conteh all look exciting players for our future - things might not be as rosy as we had hoped in the first team this season but at least it looks like we are planning forward with a high calibre of player . It may be in 2 years time that they are regulars but I hope that they fulfill their potential as it looks above league 2 .

Are there any more players in the youth setup that look like they could make the step up ?

Cam Gardner has played for the first team a few times, I believe, albeit as a substitute. But if he has had the experience of playing with and against the big boys, and he's scoring for fun for the yoof team, how would you feel if he was put in the starting XI alongside Danny Rose?

I'd feel he was too young and inexperienced to be given that responsibility. We aren't in a position to be trying out youth players at the moment. If/when we get to a safer place in the league, a few cameo appearances wouldn't be out of the question if he is genuinely a prospective first teamer.

It's a big step up.

Bramwell n Gardner were obviously 'trusted' by the previous regime. Understand that the lad ,the ex Scunt, who got 2 last night, is a goalscoring machine, albeit a  different (& younger) type of forward to Gardner. Shakeel Brown, a winger from Wolverhampton, is another one to look out for; could well earn a pro deal

Tough game for the lads.
Notts Forest were in the final last season and played well to only lose 3 - 1 to Man United in front of a 67 000 crowd at Old Trafford. I hope we can pack blundell park out and give the lads a great night in front of their own fans. It needs to be pushed a bit by the club to get the interest going...

I seem to remember watching the youth team play Arsenal in the late nineties, early noughties. If memory serves, Jermaine Pennant played for Arsenal and was quite the draw in himself, as he'd not long signed from Notts County for £2m, which at the time was an obscene amount for a 15-year old. I think we lost fairly comfortably, but the Main Stand was reasonably full that night. Good atmosphere.

The game is Tuesday 5th at BP

This is the furthest they have got for 13 years in The FA Youth Cup
They where before they have drawn there last 3 games inc today 0-0 top of the last 10 game form table for all CAT 3 teams and are also top of there group in the EFL youth cup.
Unlike most teams who normally have 8-10 of the starting 11 players 2nd years with 3 1st year pros. We don’t as our youth team is 50/50 1st & 2nd years and only have Shakeel who is a 1st year pro, we started last week v Huddersfield with eight 1st year scholars 16/17 yrs old and should of won the game which ended 2-2 to take there unbeaten run to something like 12-13 games.
Our central midfield is dominating games with Harvey Cribb (2nd year) & Alfie Foy (1st year) combining perfectly both aggressive and like to play football and I’ve not seen a team play through us. Henry Brown plays just ahead another 1st year scholar who on his day links the attacks well. Cam Gardner is on fire up top.

Cam Gardner (2nd.yr scholar) - Leading scorer
Alfie Foy (1st yr scholar) - Most assists and has been ever present in the line up.

Cam Gardner and Alfie Foy are attracting a lot of interest with numerous clubs monitoring them but Cam Walsh LCB/LB is having a great season after a long injury last season. Harvey Cribb is also playing really well after a slow start to the season as came in late so took a few games to get fitness up.
For me these 4 have a great chance but there’s a few more not far behind.

Get down and support the lads v Notts Forrest Tuesday 5th December at BP

The problem is the gap from the U18s to the first team due to not having an U21s more so in physicality and experience. There is a few who have a chance but going out on loan to play man’s football would be beneficial to adjust physically and gain experience.

This is why I find the academy system so bloody frustrating. As soon as you get a decent prospect the big guys just come and gobble them up for pretty small fees before they even get chance to sit on the first team bench!

Because there is no pathway to the first team and he’d get paid more higher up the pyramid. Are these clubs telling you that they’re interested but won’t commit then?

Contract means nothing apart from Grimsby can ask for a bit more money. Which big clubs won’t be bothered about and will pay as there’s a limit as classed as compensation as product of academy, even though he only signed at scholar as from Newcastle.

Interest is just that. Clubs will watch a player numerous times and still might not end up making an offer. All I said is there is interest in Cam and Alfie as a few clubs have been watching them several times this season one club watched both of them 5-6 times I’ve been told. Doesn’t mean an offer is imminent.
There’s been talk apparently for a few years about U21s but I think they prefer sending lads out to play non league as playing against men which is better than playing U21 which a lot of our youth could easily do now.

There will be loads at the Forest FA Youth Cup game to see how they do against a decent CAT 1 club after that depending on how they do could be what makes them make an offer. It’s hard sometimes to judge if they will be good enough at a CAT 1 when watching them at CAT 3.

What is also good for them is only Shak got his contract extended to a 3rd yr scholar no pros got given out last season as they thought they had better players coming through this and next season and didn’t want anybody in there pathway. So for Cam Edwin Essel is the next striker above him and he’s 2 yrs older. If he doesn’t get kept then Cam basically has nobody ahead of him to the first team. Alfie is only a 1st year and playing ahead of his age already but has another year before he’s worrying about a pro.
