Grimsby Town are crowned Division Three champions after beating Sheffield United 4-0 at Blundell Park in front of 19,276.

Does anyone remember ever seeing videoTV footage of this game?

We aren’t aware anything exists. Can anyone tell me otherwise?

Never seen any . There is some audio commentary on Facebook with the unmistakable voice of Charlie Eckberg commentating for Humberside

I was a mere youth but what a game and atmosphere. Not sure how accurate the gate as there was a couple of weak spots in the main that were an easier way to climb in :)

Seem to recall there were more weak spots when Sheffield fans tried to smash their way out the back of the Osmond. Great match.

You never take enough in when you live through those moments. I was 25 and I suppose I assumed I would celebrate many more title winning seasons. The main thing I remember is the pitch being rock hard with no grass on it and Kevin Moore being carried shoulder high from the pitch. The attendance of 20k was one of several in that season in league and league Cup.

Sometimes when I close my eyes I can still see images from that game. I thought it was shown on ITV but I am obviously wrong about that.

They showed Sheff Wed v Wimbledon, as it clinched promotion for the Wendy’s. Remember being gutted as the town match was for the championship and a local match.

I was 16 years old at the time. Stood in the old Barrett Stand that day .... what an atmosphere, and what a performance.
If you throw in the League Cup games against Everton and Wolves ...... well, anybody that was at those games will know where I am coming from. UTM.

(the team below had it all)

I was 8.it was my introductory year to Grimsby Town. That season was very, very special. In fact, nothing I have experienced at matches since then has quite matched it, and there have been some incredible experiences in that time frame, I think we can all agree.

If it had been filmed it would only have been a short news story and Roly may well have had a copy but I would have thought it would have been out there by now.

He wouldn't have filmed it as the Findus stand with the gantry wasn't built until 1982.

I remember the end, Town fans taunting United fans that were trying to get out of the cage in the corner. Once in the car Charlie Ekberg was doing his report and said how the Town fans had gone to the Osmond end to applaud Utds fans for never stoppiong singing throughout the game  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D. He was an old fashioned sort of chap even then.

19,252 officially, although suspiciously low when compared to 22k v Everton and 23k v Wolves, as it did seem packed everywhere. Probably only 1,500 blades in the Osmond corner though. What did that hold? Maybe 2,500 when full, so would account for some of the difference.

One of the things about those days I can’t get my head round was you just rocked up paid in cash on the turnstile and 19000 got in without a  problem. My brother got married that day and I was best man fortunately the reception was at the Blundell Park Hotel so I managed to do the duties then get in behind the goal in the Osmond last minute wearing a suit and went back to the reception afterwards

I might be wrong but I seem to recall one elderly old Bill - arms stretched across the gate separating the away corner from the Main stand keeping the fans apart.

Great match, only 14 at the time. I used to have an official audio cassette of the match, but have never seen any video of the game.
Happy days UTM

The game clashed with Hull FC v Hull KR RL Cup Final at Wembley, so every camera crew in the Hull-centric region were down there I expect.

Dear old Charles summed it up on RH for us though - with all the fans on the pitch at the end I think he said something along the lines of “no one gives a stuff about rugby league in Grimsby…”

He's always told me it wasn't filmed. But there are random cine clips I have of Barnsley (h) in 78/79 and Exter 71/72 filmed from the Main Stand so always the chance someone else filmed it. We can live in hope.

Yeah there was an audio cassette of the match and some interviews with players and Kerr. It included the Town Hall reception too. I loved it. Played it and played it as a kid. Wish I’d still got it. Think it was produced by Radio Humberside. Dave Gibbins presented it. Might’ve been called ‘Up the Mariners’.?

There may not be a video of the game to watch, but I still have the memories in my head.

I was a 10 year old perched on a crush barrier at the front of Main Stand near the tunnel. Can't picture the goals in my head though. A very vague recollection that the goals were shown on Calendar on the following Monday but not 100% - would love to see some footage if there is any.

I have about 30 full match dvds from the late 80's early 90's copied from VHS videos, the quality is of its day, but watchable.

Don't know about footage but one of the highlights of watching town for me .hot day and the atmosphere was electric ,we battered them . Got to hand it to utd supporters though , they didn't stop singing for the entire game. Magical match.

I remember Kev Drinkell rifling one into the roof of the net from the edge of the box, but no recollection of his other two. I seem to recall Joe Waters’ goal was a brilliant individual run and finish from distance.

Always worth getting in touch with Bruce from OTD GTFC, to ensure it’s nothing that he doesn’t have copied.

That man does an unbelievable job.
