Happy with that team. Town 6/1 today.

3-5-2. Might I be right in saying that that’s the formation with which Hurst has his best PPG record?
Posted by: chaos33, October 21, 2023, 2:10pm; Reply: 3
Town are the longest price of any L2 club today.
Looks like 5-3-2 so if we keep getting done easily behind our full backs then there’ll be anger no doubt.  Can’t really disagree with that. Bench looks decent. Expect us to lose, but really hoping for an improvement, obviously. And no more f*cking soft goals please!

It's the formation we were forced into and got out of our slump with if I remember right.

One day it would be lovely to go into a match feeling positive and full of expectation, rather than dreading kick off and fearing a drubbing

Before I sign out until next weekend, I genuinely believe our squad is as good if not better than the last couple of seasons. Problem is the tactics and formation plus the fact other teams have taken say 4 or 5 strides forward whereas we've taken 2 or 3 baby steps forward.

Anyway. Enjoy your weekend and half term if you're involved in it. I'll pop back on the fishy in a few days!

Whose to blame? Where does the Buck stop?  If not the manager, then the owners. If not the owners, then there must be a sacrificial Tea Lady who we can sack, and problem solved.
We can, of course, blame the fans who either want too much or are not fan-ny enough (no rudey intended)

So for me think we have a few players that have been in a few relegation scraps and not done so well Rodgers, Mullarkey and Eastwood, other new players just lack confidence and that has crept in across the team Clifton is prime example and our LB with majority at the back it’s no wander we keep conceding.

Just need some luck and a result to go our way, would be great to come back from being behind to build that belief up again.

flipping Pyke comes on, which was unnecessary since Wilson looked absolutely fine after his knock, and immediately ruins our defensive line by running backwards about half an hour before the free kick was taken and plays everyone onside. Just brilliant Hurst, well done

Wilson hasn't started many (any?). If he doesn't look after him, and he aggravates, we are screwed. This one will be on Pyke, and as someone who played full back, he needs to do better.

Probably when some are starting to flag after an intense 90. Our first 11 still is stronger than our subs, so taking off players is a risk.

Such a basic oversight that we don’t have a big man to launch it up to in the dying moments of the game like this. Eastwood can kick the ball about a million miles with almost zero effort, but it shouldn’t be Rose’s responsibility to win the flick ons.

Another defeat by one goal, which most of them have been.

Fecking frustrating, but we are leaky as hell at the back. We can now score against good sides, but we can't keep 'em out. Bit of a switch around from previous iterations of a Hurst team.

Today was always going to be a free hit - no sane board is going to sack a manager for losing away to the league leaders who had won their last 7 games, provided it was not an embarrassment.

There were crumbs of encouragement out there today that I didn’t see against Accrington. If, and it remains a big if, we can play with a system the players understand and we stop conceding amateurish goals then things may not be quite as bad as they look on the surface.

That said, a defeat on Tuesday, in front of a poor and toxic crowd, would have to be bordering on untenable territory.

I dont think anyone is suggesting that PH should be sacked  purely for a narrow defeat at the league leaders,
more to the point is 3 wins in 18 games with an inability to protect points and a plummet down the league, i have nothing
against PH, but protecting the future of this club is more important than 1 man, the thought of falling out of the league
for a third time in a matter of a few years makes me feel physically sick.

Hurst on Humberside moaning about the officials claiming they were influenced by the home crowd (lol really?), saying we deserved something from that and that his subs had nothing to do with their winner. Nonsense, we defended poorly, Pyke messed up the defending for the winner by dropping deep far too early, we rarely troubled their keeper (who stupidly rushed miles out to clatter Clifton for our penalty) and the officials were rubbish for both sides. Don't forget they also missed a penalty at 2-0. Very tired of the excuses.

The buck stops with Hurst on recruitment but a different manager is stuck with the same squad, which patently unbalanced and lacking depth. No defender on the bench, Hunt not trusted, Pyke not good enough as a third striker, three wide players but none have real pace. We failed to use the loan market in the last week of the window despite the injury to Wilson.

Disappointed with our sh1t defending (again) our decision making, quality and slowness of our passing, our lack of pace, our screaming lack of physical presence and strength at centre back and at centre forward, and embarrassed at the general quality of our crossing - especially from the same two or three, who are consistently cr•p at it.

I would add though…..to those few posting…’we’re in a relegation battle’; we’re not. Not yet. Nobody is in a relegation battle in October when the season ends in May and a window to come. That said…..our current league position is probably now reasonably regarded as an indication of our relative quality in this league. I can’t see anyone being satisfied with being 20th best out of 24; especially not with those glaring and costly sub par aspects listed above.
Got to win Tuesday.

Agree with most  of your points LM, but despite  the  'unbalance' of the squad it still has players  easily capable  of being top half
of the bottom EFL league, i just feel they are confused and frustrated by the  limited 'style' of play they are instructed to play,
with very limited ideas in  the final third, constant team changes  and players being seemingly frozen out, everything at the club just
seems worryingly so negative again, just as it did in our last relegation season.
I hope PH can turn this around, but to be honest  i worry he cannot.

Not saying all is rosy but that was, overall, a decent fight against the league leaders and we could have came away with a draw which I'd have taken before the match started... Their 3rd was never a foul and the resulting free kick, they were offside before it got bundled in.

I think the time has come and indeed passed for us to part ways with Hurst, it is still relatively early in the season but we should not delay any longer in making a decision and allowing freah ideas and an assement of the current squad by a incoming managment team before Christmas.

Time and time again we give away soft goals, which is odd given that the manager and all the coaching staff are former defenders.

In Wilson, Eisa and Rose we have players that can score quality goals, but it's no good if we can't keep a clean sheet. It needs sorting. quickly. Otherwise we will drop into the relegation dog fight pretty soon.

Tuesday is critical. Anything other than a win and we are in trouble.

That said, I have seen Stockport fans saying that we are one of the best sides they have seen at home. The only away games I have seen were at Bradford and Wallsall and we looked really good in places in both games, though we didn't win either. So this team has potential. We have some good players. We just need to firm up at the back and we are overdue the rub of the green to turn our fortunes round.

The question is why can't we replicate it at will.?  Other teams would have been pushed aside by Town if they played like the last 60mins at Stocky, but we normally play like first 30 minutes, It's a mystery.

All a bit contrasting though isn’t it..didn’t we have the highest number of points lost after leading in games recently? And now it’s a case of go behind and we can’t overturn it..

Still maintain confidence and injuries/rotation are main factors..some self inflicted you could argue? Playing devils advocate you could argue we’ve been a bit unfortunate in Wilson being injured..as he does look like a striker who’ll cause problems..but counteract that with loss of form from a few, maybe some not performing as expected etc ??

Do genuinely think we have some players, not entirely convinced we have the better ‘team’ atm - guess there’s potential, but there’s also weakness.

Don’t think we’ll go down, could finish anywhere from 12th to 20th imho (that’s allowing for an improvement) - but I guess the question really is whether the ‘improvement’ that’s been asked for is enough, or indeed if it’s there at all?

Completely understand the calls for calm, back Hurst etc - as much as I completely understand those who want change and reasons why.  Don’t see them getting rid of Hurst personally but if it comes to Christmas and results are of a pattern like they have been - then I think it’s a situation those in charge can’t really ignore/trust it’ll change.

I'm starting to think regardless of manager, we'll need to change things in January. Hurst has been one to change things mid-season if it isn't working. I think he'll be wanting to bring in another CB, LB, and maybe CM or striker if Pyke hasn't fully found.

I don't think the left back situation was too predictable, but I think the CB shortage was an oversight, and the more we go on, the more apparent it is that maybe Waterfall isn't best placed to be our first choice backup.

None of the positions that Ancient suggests strengthening are as a result of ‘pïssing away’ funds in the summer transfer window.

For instance, we need a new LB because we didn’t sign anyone for there in the summer. That’s a different problem and has been well discussed on here, but it wasn’t the result of pïssing the budget up the wall.

We got exploited down the left almost every game last season. If the budget is basically spent, as has been suggested, then the budget has been drunk up the wall. Not to mention shortages up front, centre back and not sorting out CM which was obviously weak last season too.

We're short of quality and have no depth at all. Doesn't exactly scream big budget, so if is is then it's definitely been spunked away

I don’t think we have spent all of the budget.

That’s why we tried to sign a LB on loan at the end of window. It was too late - a decision which was poor, I agree.

I also agree with you that we targeted and exploited down our left flank most of last season. Presumably, Hurst hoped that Glennon would improve with a full summer’s training. Based on the evidence so far, and the late move for a LB, that hasn’t happened.
