Weirdly, it’s difficult to muster an opinion as to who I’d want. Last season we conspired to get virtually the worst conceivable draw on five consecutive occasions, and yet somehow managed to turn it into comfortably the most memorable and incredible FA cup campaign the club has had in living memory.

For all the talk of turgid football of late, much of it valid by the way, we haven’t half witnessed some incredible twists and turns of fate this past 18 months or so.

Funny old game, innit.

Can’t be any worse than our first round draw last year, or indeed the second, third, and fourth too.

The QF draw was about the worst possible in terms of opposition and cash receipts as well. Blackburn at home would have been the most winnable, the Mancs away for cash. The others similar for cash but definitely more winnable.

Who do I want? Anyone at home that we can beat. Can’t buy a result away atm. Get through and use it as a confidence builder for the league games, would be nice to get through to at least 3rd round again, though the league is priority.

An early exit won’t go down well so just avoid anybody decent.

I’m not sure it’s ever quite sunk in what we achieved last season. Whenever I meet someone new in industry and they ask me who my team is, their reaction purely revolves around the FA Cup last season.

I will admit to being one of the very few who sloped off at the end of the Brighton match as I cannot abide losing so heavily against anyone, but deep down I knew we’d probably never experience the likes again. It’s quite sad really.

Anyway, let’s see what we can do this season. A 3rd round draw against Man Utd away would possibly tick off one of my final to-do’s, so let’s see…..

If it was played on the Saturday 3.00pm k.o. you might just about get the return train to Pickering on the North Yorkshire Moors railway but it would be a dash from the ground to get to the station for 5.15pm. Depends how much time a dopey ref might add on.

As we’re on 5he get rid off Hurst theme then be prepared for his pre match interview, which ever it is he’ll make them sound like Man City, that in my opinion had always been his problem, he big talks up every opposition to the point where he starts to believe it himself so decides the best option is to play defensively.

It is extremely unlikely we will be able to repeat last season's heroics, so thank goodness we weren't drawn against the League One leaders this year.

Ebbsfleet or Slough should be beatable, if our players have the right attitude.

I agree with Jockstrap: I'd prefer the lowest ranked team until the third round, and then hope for a trip to Old Trafford.

A glamour tie though this looks set to be, do we perhaps have an outside chance of making the TV for this one?

From a very quick glance, Slough look to be the third lowest ranked team (21st in the NLS) to be playing a league side at home (Billericay and Marine the other two). Ordinarily I’d still think no chance, but does our status as last season’s quarter finalists give us an edge? The TV broadcasters will have plenty of relevant stock footage for ads etc.

I’ve jumped the gun slightly actually, in assuming Billericay would despatch Sheppey United (who I’d genuinely never heard of until this moment), but they’re currently 1-0 down.

Yeah, 2-0 up against a Boro side featuring the likes of Ravanelli and Juninho, ended up 3-2 down, equalised in the last minute and then lost the replay 3-0. Could have been a different story had it gone straight to pens, as it would today.

Chesterfield would have got to the FA Final if they had VAR goal line technology.  David Ellery was the referee who overruled the linesman who gave a goal.  It is accepted that Chesterfield had the ball over the line.

It’s not the nicest of places. Though, saying that it’s the same as anywhere in the commuter belt where city folk have moved into the soybeans and made sure that normal folk are priced out.

Did all the training and opening for the Nando’s there though can’t remember what the town centre pubs were like for some reason. In fact, it was the first time I’d ever tried ‘halal’ meat.

Just incase you are wondering though, wernham Hogg don’t have a premises there since moving over to America

It's not the worst place in the world, it's just incredibly dull. It's one of too many non-descript towns within the western part of London's commuter belt in which I've spent ay too much time, and by that I mean any time at all. Slough, Basingstoke, Swindon, Woking, Staines, Didcot, High Wycombe - probably extending as far as Milton Keynes and Northampton. All places home to grey skies, grey buildings, grey businesses and grey people.

You don't have to try too hard to find issues with the geography or socioeconomics of Grimsby / Cleethorpes, but it does have a meaningful history, an identity, and soul. Something the above places don't. The north / south divide exists, but you have to be careful what you wish for.
