When does it not look sparse in the main stand on a chilly Tuesday night? The view is crap, it's full of people whinging and it's freezing lol. It's all results based though, nobody wants to go to a game we lose so the more we win the more people show up for games because everybody loves a bit of glory.

So what , they can’t play 60 mins tonight? Wilson in particular , desperate for a bit of firepower.

Posted by: Badger57, October 3, 2023, 8:40pm; Reply: 47
Bit lucky to be ahead at half time. Some lovely football from Barrow but for some excellent defending and some poor finishing they wouldn't be behind at the break. Could be a long 45 minutes ahead!
Posted by: Kris2, October 3, 2023, 8:40pm; Reply: 48
Somewhat surprising to go in ahead at half time, bit of an out of nowhere goal from the one good bit of play we had. If Barrow were much good they could have scored 3 by now lol, we look exactly like a team without much confidence after losing a couple of games, unsteady going forward and a lack of movement. Still looking dodgy defensively, they managed to run through our team 2-3 times now on the left so it needs sorting.

Don't know what to say about that penalty, Barrow will see that as justice since it wasn't actually a penalty as he got fouled outside the box. I don't know if the pitch is slippery tonight or what but Eisa looking a bit like Bambi on ice at times  , he's fell over and fumbled on the ball a few times but he was part of the move that led to the goal so maybe give him the benefit of the doubt.
Posted by: cardiffmariner, October 3, 2023, 8:41pm; Reply: 49
Crap pen, even crapper follow up.

Great striker's goal by Rose.

We're too reluctant to go forward when the opportunity presents itself and seemed to have stopped playing the press. Apart from the occasional time when we do as an after thought and leave big gaps on the pitch for them to run through.

Don't think one will be enough to win it based on our recent defensive record and Barrow's lively forward play.

We've been flipping awful. The ease at which they've created space down the wings, especially their left, is embarrassing. All they are doing is to have a runner push forward from midfield towards one of the wings and we're instantly a man short. Doesn't help that Eisa is having a poor game (as his penalty showed) and Khan is so far forwsrd, he's not offering any defensive cover. Reckon he'll be hooked shortly, possibly for Clifton to add a bit more pace and defensive effort.

Midfield is all over the place defensively person as the forward 4 in the 4-1-4-1 can't work out how far forward they should be. Hopefully, a rejig at half-time, because we can't give them so much possession in the second half and hope to get away with it.

Still, it's better to be shite and winning than playing OK and losing. Need to play much, much better during the rest of the game.

The linesman down the Main Stand side was comically bad that half. I think he guessed every decision and got most of them wrong.

If that wasn't the ugliest football game I've ever watched. Kept in it by Eastwood. Ridiculous penalty but lovely finishes by Rose and Wilson. Didn't really deserve to win this game but I guess from getting robbed on previous games we deserve some points. Onwards.
Posted by: Kris2, October 3, 2023, 9:45pm; Reply: 108
Barrow will wonder how they managed to lose that game, it was rough going but managed to hold out for a much needed win. Hopefully that will bring some confidence back into the team and they'll up their game for the next match as we looked all over the place by the end desperately trying not to lose even when ahead.

3pts against a team with simply better players in most positions. Eastwood and Rodgers joint MOM for me and special mention to Andrews who i thought was the pick of our midfield. Far more questions than answers tonight but we have played better and lost so happy with the win.

Concerned

But if we do that everyweek and go up we would take it wouldn't we .
Maybe we deserve a bit of luck .
Eastwood MOM for me
Thought Michee did well on his wrong side.
Andrews looks like he has potential tbf
Rose is just Rose and Wilson seems to add that something different at least he can play on the shoulder it looks like .

Need to build on it at Tranmere now

Hurst does what he does , reverted to type really and his longest losing streak is still 3 games in his second spell  , credit for the Wilson change aswell.
Posted by: RonMariner, October 3, 2023, 10:01pm; Reply: 118
Couple of goals for Wilson in two appearances. Rose Eisa and Wilson have goals in them, so maybe things will start to turn. Be good to get Maher back fully fit too, so hope that we might stop leaking goals.

Tranmere are not tearing any trees up at the moment so let’s see if we can pull something off at the weekend. If we do we should climb a few places up the table.

Deserved a draw on saturday 2nd best tonight that's how it goes , eastwood rodgers waterfall did wonders to keep the ball out of the net at times , thought andrews pick of midfield & wilson seems to be edging towards a first start , take the points & run

Credit to Hurst for not starting Wilson despite the demands from many fans. Best not to risk him when he's just getting back and fit. Hopefully he's getting closer and closer to a start. Going to have to protect Maher also.

Good to see competition in midfield with Andrews also. Ominous, but it seems Efete is our best left back. It's probably ok over the short term, but I hope Amos can fight his way be into contention, do not want to risk an injury to a RB otherwise we won't have cover there.

We were, in general, flipping terrible throughout most of the game tonight. They were way better than us on the night but, for a change, we took a couple of our chances whilst they missed most of theirs.

Whole-hearted defending throughout, but a distinct lack of intelligence to go with it - so many aimless whacks upfield straight to one of their players, fluffed headers and clearances not finding safety and too much panic overall.

Their No. 20 who came on caused all sorts of problems but it was impressive the way they played it into him to lay off rather than for just hopeful flicks into space.

If they aren't in and around the play-offs come the end of the season, I'll be amazed because, as poor as we were, they played some excellent stuff.

Oh, forgot to say, two really good goals for the strikers and I thought Andrews did pretty well, showing a lot of potential. Conteh booked for his first challenge as usual. I really don't know what the lad can do if referees keep buying the antics of opposition players as they roll around in feigned agony every time he touches them.

And about the referee, he stopped play for Efete to get treatment at the end, we waved it away saying it wasn't necessary and he ordered our physio to come in so Efete had to go off for no treatment! Never seen anything like that before.

We definitely can't complain about that mate. He stopped them crossing the ball in injury time. If that was the other way round there would've been a riot.

Definitely liked the look of Andrew's and I thought Gav did pretty well especially second half. Seems a bit odd when they dominated most of the game.

Defense looked ragged, first half we got torn to pieces down our right.
Some brilliant blocks and clearances from Waterfall, Rogers and Eastwood saved the day.

Just glad to get the points.

Efete taking a knock stopped that chance, but they than had a drop ball with us reduced to ten men and their keeper having the time to get into our box! Luckily, Eastwood held it.

A very welcome 3 points. Had we lost tonight we would be right in the relegation mix.

We still are!

Well. We're 6 points from relegation, 6 points from play-offs, so if we're going by that logic, we're also in the mix for the play-offs ;). We could just drop the hyperbole though, and say it's early, and we're mid-table.

We should have lost tonight and had we done so we would have been right in the relegation mix at this (early) stage.

If you think the luckiest win I have seen for some time takes us into mid table security then you have rose tinted glasses on.

And we should have got points against Crawley on Saturday, and in other games. If you're just focussing on the performance when we do bad, and the points when we do well, but ignoring those other things, you're just demonstrating you're cherry picking negatives because that is how you want people to feel about Hurst. I'll take an ugly win after some attractive draws and defeats. It all balances out in the end.

Oh just intercourse off you idiot. It is TONIGHTS game we are discussing. We were garbage. Even our manager thinks it, everybody knows it. Their manager knows it and their fans know it.

Yeah, let's not talk about the things that are inconvenient to your argument.

Be rude. I'm going to be happy Grimsby won. Usually town fans are...

This is the match thread. Tonights match. Are you thick as well as condescending?

Oh, the irony.

I'm sure you have some redeeming features.

Good teams get wins when they have a bad game, bad teams lose when they've played well.
Last night was a bit of a fluke as no good team would ever play that bad

But we played well against Swindon 3 days earlier, so we can’t be that bad a team can we?

second half saturday to the 90 mins last nite just chalk & cheese shows how daft football can be , we never got a grip in midfield conteh was sat far too deep holohan too advanced so massive gaps for them to exploit & to be fair they all knew theiir jobs & still lost

I'm always a little baffled when fans don't give the opposition any credit. The narrative is that we were bad, when in reality, Barrow were very good, and made us look bad.

There also seems to be scant enjoyment for the win, because "it's only Barrow" that we beat. A phrase I heard when leaving the ground.

We weren't good last night, but we now have forward players who can score goals and they pounced on a couple of opportunities, while Barrow didn't. Our keeper was also a factor in that and had a good game.

Not all the team performed badly as individuals, but as a collective, we were wanting.

Barrow looked very good, but there is no doubt that we were also very bad!

But that is my point. They made us bad by forcing us to retreat and defend in numbers.

"we need to be more ruthless in both boxes"

*Grimsby Town are more ruthless in both boxes, but pretty crap overall, however it results in a win*........

Fans weren't giving a great deal of praise in matches where we played well, because we threw away leads, and it was all pointless if you don't get the points. Now we win a match in which we were second best and everyone is quick to point out we were crap. We were, but who cares?

If you're only ever gonna be happy when we win games AND play really well, supporting a lower league team may not be the pastime for you, hah.

Wins a win....everyone knows full well we can play a hell of a lot better than that. But we needed them 3 points.

With the Mariner Fans Annual Scratch Your Eyes Out coming early this year, lets have a recap.
11 th game (25% of the season)  13/33 pts. And we won. Onto the next game.
Now that Sutton and FGR (last year's Blue Eyed boys, "wish we were them"  )  have blocked the Drop Zone, we can reflect without panic, including me.
I've never been a fan of PH but never wanted to behead him. I always think his teams have had no prep, and have a natter in the tunnel at the start of the match to sort out positions. And with regards Town scoring early, in Fergies time, it was opinioned, scoring too early against Man Utd was said to make them mad, and they gave teams a thrashing for the audacity of scoring first. Town seems to take fright in being two up, and cannot grab the situation and finish teams off. I mean they were two up (could have been three) they must have done something right. Right?

Funny you should say that as I was chatting to a former player ( 2 seasons and regular starter)  who said pretty much that is what happens under Hurst,  very little discussed about who is particularly doing what on the field but he puts the onus on the players and their experience to manage their individual games , yes some opposition traits are discussed but not in the tiniest detail.
I found that quite surprising given how we seem to over consider the opposition in set up but that is what he said.
