Really regretting not going now that i've discovered Sky Sports are forcing that clown Andy Hinchliffe onto us on commentary. Can't wait for him to spend the whole match moaning at players and telling them what they should have done instead!

We look very comfortable on the ball but as yet no goal threat whatsoever and crosses just not going in. Bradford done absolutely nothing so far so hopefully we can start to create some actual goal chances.

Our general play is nice but we have no idea when to take risks and commit to players to a forward phase of play. Can't imagine the system is helping too much but we have only have one fit striker so don't know what can we do.

We need to stop playing Efete at left back. He has no positional awareness or left foot. Went to sleep there and it cost us at least 2 points. Hurst needs to also realise it's flipping BOILING and using all your subs to get fresh legs on is important in matches like this so we don't concede sloppy lazy goals like that.
Posted by: arryarryarry, September 9, 2023, 2:25pm; Reply: 68
That was just excrement by Town, Efete is flipping useless as a full back and Hurst has to take responsibility for not making changes in midfield as Holohan completely went missing and Clifton was poor as well.

Loads of players on the bench including ones who Hurst has signed in recent weeks who he never seems to have any interest in utilising. It's the same subs coming on every week (Efete out of position, Pyke for the last 5-10 mins to do very little). Why are Hunt / Ainley and Andrews on the bench if you can't bring them on to freshen up the team during a punishingly hot day?
Posted by: sonofmadeleymariner, September 9, 2023, 2:33pm; Reply: 83
Can't moan too much in the end for that one. We played well, played good football, but we were let down by a one off moment and a lack of bite up front.
Posted by: mariner91, September 9, 2023, 2:33pm; Reply: 84
The frustrating thing is we're not far off. But why does Hurst not make substitutions? Some of the players were out on their feet towards the end. I still maintain that we need better quality than Clifton and Holohan if we want to get in the play offs.

Excellent first half effort.
Second half got to grips with them after about 15 mins, in , settled into it and killed their momentum.

However...again....you can't expect to reduce the opposition to no chances and a 1 goal lead always gives them a chance of something.

Almost a perfect away performance but paid the price for not turning possession into chances into goals.

Midfield looked tired and in that heat surely a central midfielder with fresh legs could have helped.

Think that shows how early we are in the season where a single win will put you at the top of the table. If the cheap thrill of being second for a few days to a week is all we want then I guess a win today was important but in hindsight I think a draw away is important in the long run.

Posted by: Lincoln Mariner 56, September 9, 2023, 2:39pm; Reply: 91
Usual over reaction when we concede a goal, immediately certain players are useless and Hurst should have done things differently. I probably would have liked to see a couple of changes and don’t disagree that Holohan and Eisa were the likely players to get taken off but their goal is a good strike from their only shot on target.

I was critical of us not bringing in another forward option in the window but seeing how comfortable we can be in possession, a la the first half, gives me increased hope that we are on the right tracks and with a couple of additions in January could be a very good side in this league.

If someone had said before the game Bradford would be restricted to one shot on target we would have snatched their hand off. Not much to be critical of today so hoping we can get that away win at Wrexham next week.

I’m sure most of you on here have a different perception about competitive football and watch a different match to me.
Bossed the first half and scored a very good goal. Bradford are one of the fancied teams and playoff losers from last season, they have a very experienced manager who made changes to try to make the second half more competitive. They then scored a decent goal. A draw is probably a fair result but if either team could have shaded it it was us.

We are away from home and have picked up a very good point.

Are we better than last year - undoubtedly.
Are we improving as new players gel and fit into the formation - On the evidence of the last 2 games, I’d say so.
So we are improving and playing some really good football. That’s the brief isn’t it?

I am disappointed with fellow fans and their Hurst shite/this player is shite etc.
If you want to see football perfection the best option would be to buy a sky blue shirt and cross over to Citeh.

I’m delighted with the governance of the club and the upward trajectory we are on both off and on the pitch. That’s only my view of course.

I mentioned the two midfielders were poor in the second half and we have just recently signed two so why not bring at least one on and Glennon is better than Efete.

I see the usual drivel has started on here. We go one up, they change it at half time and push us back. They score with their only shot on target, but we sat back and threw it away.
They came out and pushed us back after half time, but never looked like scoring, other than us gifting them one. We eventually calmed down and weathered the storm, but one quality strike rescued them a point. Can't complain.
We should have had a penalty near the end, Clifton was caught and went down but the ref didn't give it.

First time seeing us this season and I was impressed.

It was nice to see Town dominate the ball in the first half without resorting to a long ball. The goal was fully deserved and we were certainly the better team.

In the second half Bradford had to make changes. Apart from the first 5-10mins of the second half I don't think Bradford looked that threatening. We were 1-0 up away from home against one of the favourites, so naturally we tried to protect the lead more. We had good opportunities on the break in the second half  but didn't make the most of the positions we found ourselves in.

We lost to what I think was the first shot on goal for Bradford. It's football, that happens. I think over the 90 minutes we were the better side but a point away to Bradford is not a bad point.

It is early days and Hurst is clearly still shaping this side but I thought that display was very promising.
Posted by: AndyGTFC, September 9, 2023, 2:50pm; Reply: 99
I do think people forget there are two teams in a game sometimes. Bradford were always going to be in the front foot in the second half in front of their own fans after how bad they were in the first.

It’s a frustrating habit we have but they didn’t even look like scoring. Our achilles heel is not scoring enough when we’re ok top.

It’s another result you take before the game though.

Bore off, we had 1 effort on target from inside the area in 90 minutes which thankfully we scored from. The point that we don't create enough good scoring chances still stands and it's clearly an issue because we've controlled that game and still only come away with a point because outside of a relatively tame long distance effort from Gnahoua in the second half their keeper's had nothing to do. Holohan and Clifton just don't create anything from midfield and Eisa's had an off day.

What’s to knock about it? Bradford come out with impetuous 2nd half like any half decent team would and we literally just parked 10 men behind the ball. If we do win 1-0 it looks like a great decision from Hurst, but we didn’t and lost another 2 points from a winning position. Great guy and got us up but would prefer not to lose than rather go for a win, the most frustrating thing knowing what we have got at our disposal.

Still early days. That certainly need improving but I think we have seen signs it has. 2-0 vs Gillingham, restricting Bradford to one shot on target. To me they are signs we are improving in that regard.

Based on that performance alone, I think Town are in for a decent season. We could do with more penetration and creativity but I think that will come.

They looked there for the taking .

A very poor side ,Hughes setup is more simple than Hurst's with a larger budget .

We should be beating teams like that .

But it's still a reasonable start , 4 or more points from the next 3 games and it makes it a good start for me .

1.4 PPG would probably have us in and around the play-offs if we can maintain that .

I still think the second 10 games will shape our season , especially at home with all winnable game (on paper at least)

13 or 14 points would give us a great platform to kick on , but we need to start converting these draws into wins after this difficult first 10 .

Just to post negativity? In a football world where everything is stat based we have now dropped 9 points from winning positions. How many times are you happy for that to happen before you realise what is stirring everybody else in the face? Typical hurst tactics cost us another 2 points.

No, a snap shot, their only shot on target in the 88th minute cost us 2 points.

Well that tells me you’re absolutely clueless when it comes to football.

Forget the second half for a moment.......we completely dominated the first.....but only really created one opportunity.....that is already becoming a pattern and is the main problem in not securing points.

Of course Bradford were going to come out fired up, of course they are going to make changes...the fact we rode out their momentum was commendable but once we had....whilst relatively comfortable we offered very little ourselves again....and ultimately paid the price for only having a single goal lead.

Whilst we look at individuals sometimes.... this is a team/ squad issue. Danny Rose is fcked after 70 mins but we have no one to relieve him, therefore our limited attack drops down a further scale.

I don't doubt that, had Wilson been available, we'd probably have seen him come on for the last 15 minutes or so of the past couple of games.

Pyke doesn't look like the sort of a player who can play as a lone striker so we're pretty limited at present. Rose puts in a huge shift every game and looks as fit as a fiddle at present, but he won't be able to keep it up indefinitely.

Not sure what game you were watching. Tactically we completely dominant in the first half. Does Hurst not get any credit for that? Second half we kept our attacking players on the pitch and threatened on the counter without creating any clear cut chances against some strong and experienced defenders. In the past Hurst has been criticised for bringing on an extra defender or holding midfielder so he really can’t win with some people. Bradford aren’t a poor side but we made them look like one.

Read the Bradford forum, many on there think they are crap and many want Hughes gone.

Yes we did dominate the first half but some of that was because Hughes got his tactics wrong and changed it at half time and until the last few minutes we never looked like scoring another and much of that was down to some of our players especially midfield looking copulated.

God knows how Hurst failed to see that.

Good point or 9 points lost from winning positions. All about opinions isn’t it?

Agree
At least we are getting in to winning positions which I think is an improvement on last season
A little patience and I'm sure in time we will turn more of those winning positions in to actual wins

We still have yet to see Khan who was very useful in an attacking sense last season. Wilson looked dangerous in pre-season. The sad truth is the guys that can change the match are not fit yet and we're having to manage with what we have. We have 3 wingers/forwards out. We have 2 new players in, 1 likely had no pre-season and another Hurst hasn't fully looked at and has barely trained with the team. We have Hunt who I don't think Hurst fully trusts, so throwing him on could create more problems that it solves. No point having fresh legs on if they don't do the right things.

He could have easily thrown me on for the last 20 mins as I was fresh, and it'd be like we were down to 10 men. They might have scored 3. Hurst always has a decision to make. Will bringing x on give me more than what I have on the pitch and the answer isn't always yes. He brought Efete on likely due to Amos being on a yellow, and Pyke on in an attacking sense, but it's not quite working for him yet and I think Hurst and Doig need more time with him.

We had a solid start because of Hurst, Bradford adapted and unfortunately, there are 2 teams playing this game, and they're hardly going to roll over.

Let's not forget, we seem to have about 7 new signings in our starting 11. It takes time to fully gel.

Is it frustrating we conceded? Yes. Is panicking and calling for the heads of our manager who's just shy of play-offs after a brutal start to the league? Hell no. It seems some folk are from the Watford school of football management.

Do you think Hurst is completely happy with every part? He will be wanting to improve things as well. He's got to decide whether he needs to work with who is in the starting 11, or whether another squad player can improve on that. Learning and improving as footballers isn't a 2 minute job. He cannot just Chelsea it, and as we've seen, that works brilliantly...

What makes you think he failed to see that? If substitutions were guaranteed to succeed why doesn’t every team make 5 per game? I’ll form my own opinion rather than listening to Bradford fans on a forum thanks. We all know football forums can be full of irrational negativity.

Well if he did see that then great decision to leave on two players who were clearly not in the game, Holohan hardly touched the ball in the second half and Clifton was having a poor game as well and if he isn't going to alter the team when we were clearly struggling to get back in the game what's the point in even bothering with subs.

Nobody has actually mentioned how weakened the Bradford side were and it was a great opportunity to get 3 pts

Get back in the game? We were winning one nil and pretty comfortable. Holohan and Clifton might have quiet games on the ball but their running off the ball has been excellent in the last two games

100% regarding Holohan and Clifton. I know Hurst made this comment after the Gillingham game as well, saying how good they were off the ball. Their role in the team has changed now we are playing a different way, and this is now a bigger part of it. Both played well yesterday.

Towns team consisted of only 3 players who played in this same fixture towards the end of last season.

They have lost only one game in 7 so far this time. Still plenty of time to gel and see what contribution the injured players can make. Next Saturday will be tough, but then we can hopefully push on.

We have played 5 teams in the top 11 in our 7 games, so plenty of opportunities ahead of us.

By my reckoning, we have only been behind for about 30 mins all season, against County.

If we can get a little bit more ruthless, we will do very well this season.

And if we had scored 1 more goal in each game we would have been above 3 of them and level with another. Its what you do on the day not what they have done before/after that takes you up the league.

If we scored 20 against them, we'd be above them also. We'd be storming the league if we scored 20 each game and conceded none, but that isn't based in fact or reality.

These are professional teams of footballers, and the opponents pay defenders to stop goals, midfields to win balls back, and forwards to create and finish chances. Unless they're signing players from Sunday league, these players will have talent and will be able to do it, and cause us headaches, as much as we don't want it. Football is competitive, and no team has a right to dominate every match. You've just got to hope you get the better of the chances and defend better to get the points. I'm sure you've seen commentators talk about fine margins. Have you ever considered what it means?

We don't have the biggest budget. We could thrown money at it, be outspent by many, still in league 2 and wondering if perhaps we should have built up our team over time rather than wasting cup money thinking we're playing Football Manager on the computer.

Yep.

Whenever we fail to win a game, the consensus seems to focus on what went wrong, rather than what the opposition got right.

There always has to be a fall guy; something or someone to blame. Either Hurst for his selection, tactics or use of subs, or a player who was out of position, gave the ball away, or failed in some way.

There seems to be no recognition that there is another manager, and another set of players who are trying just as hard as we are to secure the points.

Had Bradford scored the goal we did, someone would be screaming about lax marking and a forward having a free header in the penalty box.

We made Bradford look crap first half, their support think they are crap.....its fair to say we were dominant yet only only had the goal as a reward....thats the issue....the set up with a single front man effectively 5 in midfield then we should dominate when we are on it and pressing.
The issue is whilst allowing a certain domination we don't get enough people in the box with this set up....I think the goal was pretty much the only first time cross we delivered....the rest of the time we get in the final third and turn back and sideways.
Bradford rallied second half fair enough...its hard to dominate for 90 or 100 minutes now so it makes it so important to maximise those times were we are so very on top.....if its a one off you can swallow it...when it's a regular occurrence then to keep repeating it is ludicrous.
Just hope that when our only other striker returns we start to use more than one up front.

If we have 2 up top, we're a body down in midfield, and might not get a sniff of the ball. It's a balancing act, and 4-4-2 is increasingly untrendy in modern football because you barely see the ball otherwise. Some situations it does work, but we just need our players to get more clinical, either the forwards, the wingers or midfielders, and that needs players back so if players aren't performing we can look to other options.

Hurst knows we are not finishing chances, and he's likely as frustrated as we are and probably cannot wait to get Khan and Wilson back.

My point earlier was that these other teams don't have the right to be in the top 11 just because they are Mansfield etc. My point stands that most are above us because we didn't beat them when given the opportunity, not because they are bigger teams with bigger budgets, so the argument about them having a say in our results against them, is true but should not be an excuse as to why they are above us as we had chance to have a say in their results too by scoring more or defending better. This is not having a go at Hurst or Town but we are where we are based on our results, not other teams results against other teams.

Bloody hell, if we play 2 up front and therefore our midfield won't "get a sniff" that doesn't say much for the quality of our midfield.

As for not finishing chances, are we creating that many, we certainly didn't whilst being in control of the first half at Bradford?
