Maybe sometimes things just go stale and you need a change of scenery. Hopefully he can flourish here, welcome Callum!

Appears to be well thought of on initial research.

Ainleys or Ainsley?

But I don’t understand, that can’t be right, PH said we weren’t signing any out of contract players…

Good experience and match fit, so ready to go. Does this put Hunt further down the pecking order?

Seems to me like a player that just fancied a new challenge and change of scenery.

According to that wiki page he is our No10. So is Vernam on his way out?

Crewe fans keep mentioning his injury record. Presume that’s why we’ve just gone for one year. Must have something about him to play that many games.

Think the heat is getting to some of us! We need cover after CV's operation and Eisa will not last if we overplay him in cup games like this week at Barnsley. Similarly, Harry and Gav won't play every game.

Hunt is still a valuable squad player and a lot depends on how he takes future opportunities. Doubt if Hurst wants to bin him in January. More a question of having experience around while Wilson and Khan get fit.

I'm more curious how Hurst fits Khouri into the jigsaw.

Seems he lost his way a bit at Crewe after initially coming through their youth team with a lot of potential before his performances dropped off in recent seasons leading to his release. Hoping Hurst can work his magic with this one and pull off another Jon Nolan-esque career turnaround for Ainley.

edit: regarding Khouri, he's not even made the bench today so I think we need to be looking to get him out on a short-term loan to a conference side. He's got a lot of potential and at the end of last season he really impressed me, so it'd be a shame if he spends the next couple of months barely getting any competitive minutes.

Shoulder injury that required surgery and kept him out for some time then found himself on the fringes of the squad so they decided to not offer him a new contract when it was out in the summer. Has struggled to find a new club since then so will probably take him a while to get up to speed with us but hopefully he can do well. Seems like one of Crewe's youth products and is well thought of.

Probably best to ignore the tedious drivel he posts I’m starting to think, as it sort of just means you get dragged down to his miserable, negative level.

I think the fact that we have 14 Midfielders in the First Team squad could have something to do with him being down the pecking order.

3 surgeries, 2 on hamstring, 1 on the shoulder but still made well over 250 appearances between those.
To me a year deal is worth the risk here, hope he can get fully fit and stay injury free. Utm

I wish you would shut up. Hunt is probably the most gifted footballer on our books. He clearly isn’t confident and he clearly isn’t trusted at present but he was given a three year deal because the manager rates him. If it doesn’t work out then so be it but the very least you should do is support him.

Sounds like he's a bit of a Nolan type player (including the injuries )hopefully Hurst can get a tune out of him because he sounds like the type of midfield player we needed .

Disagree.  He is nowhere near Conteh for a start.  He is inconsistent with his passing and definitely not the best tackler in the squad.  And with 14 midfielders in the squad he has to improve dramatically to tie down a first eleven place.

Unlikely, as he's a winger/no 10.

I think Conte sealed Hunt's fate tbh.  That, and the fact he just hasn't really performed.

He's injured til new year at least, which is why Hurst has signed him.

Ainley could turn out to be a good signing or as bad as Crewe fans claim him to be.

One things for sure though, we should probably stop using the one example we have in Jon Nolan as some kind of benchmark of how we think a player who’s clearly lost his way might do under Hurst.

Wouldn't McAtee be a fairly good recent example?

Or Fox, Crocombe, McAtee, and by his early showing this season Eisa?

I don’t think any of them came with bad reviews on their footballing ability though did they? It’s a bit of a myth McAtee came with scathing reviews on his footballing abilities as well.

I can’t remember a single bad word said about Crocombe or Fox & Eisa came with reviews that he was constantly injured, which he was.

Maybe Mani can count to a degree but he was largely poor when given enough time on the pitch, he cropped up with a couple of cult hero goals instead.

I know it’s not popular to read too much into bad reviews from fans but they often prove to be not too far off the mark, the good news is, I very rarely see them about many of our signings these days.

Bloody hell, that's harsh on Mani!  I agree he's one who came here with poor reviews from previous clubs and went against the grain of them.

But he only started 3 games here (Yeovil, Kings Lynn and Eastleigh).  In fact they were the only 90 minute games where he got more than 25 minutes.  He scored against Yeovil and bagged a hat-trick against Eastleigh.  Kings Lynn he was as wasteful as everyone else on the day, I'm still amazed that we didn't get done by a smash-and-grab equaliser that about 4 of the away fans would have managed to see from the 2inch vantage point behind the goal.

I also agree on the Jon Nolan point, even though it was the first thought I had in mind when looking at Ainley. Creative midfielder, mixed reviews, a bit of a raised question mark about his aptitude rather than ability.   We probably do need to find a better and more relevant example.  But it's just such a good one to reel out when Hurst signs a player who he thinks he will get the best out of, even when all of us supporters know far better.

Bit like how every left back will always get compared to either Conor Townsend (if on loan) or Danny Andrew, more so if injury history and a striker dropping down a level will get the Amond treatment, heightened to the ninth degree if they've spent any time in League One playing on the right wing.

Looking at the photo of Callum at first I thought he was over six foot tall.
Then I realised he was stood next to Hursty.
